Variational has risen to become the second-largest decentralized exchange for perpetual futures by weekly trading volume, behind only Hyperliquid, according to the report, using a trading model that bypasses the shared order books common across much of the sector. Its Omni product instead places the protocol's own liquidity provider on the other side of each trade, allowing the platform to quote and hedge more than 570 markets, including crypto, equities, crude oil and gold-linked contracts.
The growth comes ahead of a planned fourth-quarter launch of the VAR token, whose over-the-counter pre-market pricing implies a roughly $1.5 billion fully diluted valuation. The proposed launch structure would place 32% of the total token supply into circulation through an airdrop at the token generation event, equal to about $480 million at that valuation.
That unusually large initial float will put token economics alongside the exchange's trading model under immediate scrutiny. Variational's disclosed treasury held about $11.8 million in USDC on Oct. 28, according to the report, including roughly $2.5 million of September inflows. At the cited token valuation, that treasury balance would equal around 2.5% of the value of tokens expected to unlock on day one.
Omni replaces an order book with a protocol market maker
Omni operates through the Omni Liquidity Provider, or OLP, an in-protocol market maker that supplies traders with a price for their entire requested order size. Once a user accepts the quote, the OLP becomes the counterparty to that contract and then hedges the resulting exposure on external venues, including Binance, Hyperliquid and traditional bank dealers.
The architecture differs from a conventional perpetual DEX, where traders and market makers place bids and offers into a shared order book. Variational can list a new product without first attracting specialist liquidity providers to build a market internally. That gives the protocol a route to offer contracts linked to Apple shares, Brent crude and equity indices alongside cryptocurrency markets.
The OLP earns revenue from the difference between its quoted customer price and the execution price it receives when hedging externally. About 20% of that spread revenue is currently directed to the protocol treasury, according to the report. Variational has said treasury revenue is intended to fund VAR token buybacks and burns, though the eventual scale and frequency of those purchases have not been established.
Quoted execution costs cited in the report were narrow: about 1.3 basis points for ETH, and below 1 basis point for index and crude oil markets. One basis point equals 0.01 percentage points. Such pricing would help Variational compete for larger trades, where even small differences in spreads can materially affect execution costs.
Its contract structure also isolates traders from each other. Each position is held in a separate contract with the OLP, meaning losses from one account's liquidation are not transferred to other accounts. The model shifts greater importance onto the OLP's capacity to manage its hedges, collateral and counterparty exposure.
Traditional trading firms add capacity for stock and index perps
The report said traditional finance trading firms committed more than $1 billion in open-interest capacity when Variational introduced stock and index perpetuals. Those products recorded $2.8 billion in trading volume during their first week, according to the same account.
The platform was founded by Lucas Schuermann and Edward Yu, former quantitative traders who previously founded Qu Capital in 2017. Digital Currency Group acquired Qu Capital in 2019. Schuermann later became vice president of engineering at Genesis, while Yu led quantitative research for linear and options market making. Both left Genesis in 2021.
Variational had 24 employees as of May 2026, up from seven in 2024, according to the report. Its staff includes former employees of Google, Meta, Virtu, IMC and Jane Street. The company is registered in the Cayman Islands and operates from New York.
The firm has raised about $62 million across three financing rounds. Seed financing combined equity with token warrants on a one-to-one basis. Dragonfly led the Series A from a $650 million fund, and Bain Capital Crypto also participated, alongside other backers cited in the report.
Volume gains have narrowed the gap with trade.xyz
Variational is entering a competitive market for perpetual contracts tied to tokenized real-world assets and traditional financial benchmarks. Hyperliquid uses a permissioned approach to market deployment, while trade.xyz has emerged as a major deployer of such contracts.
DefiLlama Research data cited in the report placed trade.xyz's September volume at about $255 billion, compared with roughly $80 billion for Variational. Trade.xyz therefore handled about three times Variational's volume during that month.
Yet Variational increased its share of their combined activity, according to the same DefiLlama dataset. Its portion rose from about 14% in late July to around 36% in September. The gain suggests that its externally hedged model has attracted substantial flow, even while trade.xyz remained the larger venue by monthly volume.
Other competitors include Ostium on Arbitrum, Lighter on Robinhood Chain and regulated broker platforms offering derivatives exposure. Variational runs on Arbitrum and has been audited by Zellic and Spearbit, the report said. No hacking incidents were cited, although the protocol retains the operational and network risks associated with its underlying chain.
Token launch will test post-incentive demand
The VAR launch presents a separate test. Historical averages cited in the report show first-month trading volume at perpetual DEX launches declining by about 54% after token generation events. The analysis projected that Variational could see a 30% to 60% reduction in open interest and trading volume once points-based incentives conclude.
The reported 32% initial circulating supply may also prove conservative. Another 18% of supply is earmarked for an ecosystem reserve, and the report said the circulating amount could exceed 32% if those tokens are used for market making or exchange listings. No release schedule for that reserve was provided.
As of Oct. 15, the report estimated Variational had $1.98 billion in total open interest, $4.14 billion in daily trading volume and $241 million in total value locked. It estimated annualized treasury revenue at roughly $30 million, compared with about $64 million for Lighter and $694 million for Hyperliquid.
At the implied $1.5 billion valuation, the report calculated a multiple of roughly 50 times annualized revenue. That compares with an average of about six times revenue for perpetual DEX tokens at launch in the analysis. DefiLlama's methodology counts one-sided open interest, the report added, which would reduce comparable open-interest figures by about 40% under that framework.
Public API could expose execution quality
Variational also plans to open a public API before the token launch. That would give automated traders and market makers a direct way to request and act on quotes, potentially increasing activity but also exposing the OLP to faster counterparties.
The protocol uses a Last Look mechanism, under which the OLP can reject an order if the market moves against it before execution. Such controls are common in fast-moving markets, but frequent rejections can weaken the practical value of displayed pricing. Published API quotes for $1,000, $100,000 and $1 million trades could provide a clearer measure of whether spreads or acceptance rates change after launch.
The OLP's financial condition remains difficult for outsiders to assess because it does not publicly disclose positions, hedge outcomes or historical profit-and-loss results, according to the report. Protocol documentation indicates that if the OLP became insolvent, trader profits accruing after the point of insolvency may not be payable.
Variational's next product, Pro, is planned for 2027 and targets institutional over-the-counter derivatives workflows, including options, interest-rate swaps, foreign-exchange swaps and structured products. The report did not identify a published revenue model linking Pro's activity to VAR holders.
Near-term evidence will come from whether open interest holds after incentives end, whether quoted spreads remain tight at larger order sizes, and whether the protocol increases the treasury's share of OLP revenue beyond the current 20%.
