US stocks rise as Ciena earnings near

2026-09-03 12:43

Ciena’s quarterly results and higher fiscal outlook have placed optical-networking demand at the center of the market’s AI infrastructure trade, as companies that operate high-capacity networks, data centers, and power-intensive computing sites compete for spending tied to new cloud facilities.

The optical networking company reported adjusted earnings of $2.11 per share on revenue of $1.67 billion for its third quarter, exceeding its previous quarterly revenue midpoint of about $1.625 billion. Ciena had guided for roughly 33% year-over-year revenue growth in the period, following a sequence of higher full-year forecasts that pointed to a faster recovery in carrier and cloud spending.

Ciena’s fiscal 2026 revenue guidance, for the year ending in October, rose from a $5.90 billion midpoint in December 2025 to $6.10 billion in March and $6.30 billion in June. That trajectory compares with fiscal 2025 revenue of $4.77 billion, showing how sharply management’s expectations have changed as customers expand network capacity for AI workloads and high-bandwidth data transfers.

Optical equipment remains Ciena’s main growth engine

Ciena’s preceding quarter offered a clear breakdown of where that momentum has been concentrated. The company reported $1.57 billion in total revenue, including $1.10 billion from optical networking, $179 million from global services, $174 million from routing and switching, $94 million from platform software and services, and $23 million from Blue Planet automation.

Optical networking revenue rose 42.2% from a year earlier and accounted for roughly 70% of Ciena’s sales. Routing and switching increased 87.9%, albeit from a much smaller base. Blue Planet automation revenue, which covers network-management tools, declined 16.4% year over year.

The mix matters for margins as well as growth. Ciena reported an adjusted gross margin of 44.9% in the prior quarter and projected a 45% adjusted gross margin for the latest period. A stable margin outlook alongside accelerating optical sales would indicate that the company is adding revenue without relying entirely on lower-margin equipment volume.

Ciena’s results arrived as the market focused on whether AI spending is moving beyond chips and into the physical systems required to connect computing clusters. Broadcom’s latest figures illustrated the scale of that demand: the company reported quarterly revenue of $29.6 billion, up 86% year over year, while AI semiconductor revenue rose 221% to $16.7 billion.

Broadcom forecast $34.8 billion in revenue for the following quarter, including $21.7 billion from AI-related products. Its shares nevertheless closed down 0.66% at $367.24 and fell as much as about 6% after hours before reducing the loss to roughly 3.5%. Broadcom said adjusted operating margin was about 68% in the reported quarter and projected 66% for the next one, leaving traders focused on whether rapid AI revenue growth can be maintained without pressure on profitability.

Bitcoin miners pursue hosting contracts

The same infrastructure spending has reshaped the investment case for several listed Bitcoin miners. Rather than relying solely on Bitcoin production, some operators have sought long-term hosting arrangements with cloud and AI computing customers, using their existing access to power, land, cooling systems, and grid connections.

Marathon Digital’s latest quarter showed the challenge of retaining a mining-led model during that transition. The company reported hashrate growth of 22% year over year, while revenue fell 27% to $174.9 million. It also sold 2,213 Bitcoin during the period.

Other operators have reported contracts measured primarily in megawatts rather than hash rate. Core Scientific said it had delivered 243 megawatts under a 12-year lease structure and issued $3.3 billion of project debt carrying a 7.75% coupon, linked to one cloud start-up customer. The structure offers potential long-term contracted revenue, while concentrating customer and financing risk in the same project.

TeraWulf reported more than 510 megawatts under contract and about $1.3 billion in rent obligations backed by Google. Cipher Mining disclosed two 300-megawatt arrangements: a 15-year direct agreement with Amazon and a 10-year deal with Fluidstack. Cipher also reported a Google-backed $1.73 billion rent obligation. Applied Digital reported 1,410 megawatts in total commitments, including 1,010 megawatts connected to investment-grade cloud counterparties.

Share-price performance has reflected enthusiasm for that conversion of mining infrastructure into AI capacity, though the gains have been uneven. From their 52-week lows through the latest close, Cipher Mining rose 114.3%, Applied Digital gained 89.3%, TeraWulf advanced 72.3%, and Marathon climbed 57.2%. Bitcoin rose 34.7% over the same span, while Core Scientific gained 28.0%. The six companies referenced remained between 38% and 55% below their 52-week highs, underscoring how sensitive their valuations remain to execution, financing, and contract delivery.

Labor data shapes the near-term backdrop

U.S. stocks ended Sept. 2 higher, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising 0.56% to 53,061.95, the S&P 500 gaining 0.47% to 7,667.45, and the Nasdaq advancing 0.45% to 26,217.83. Utilities led sector gains, rising 2.26%, followed by communication services at 1.47%, while industrials fell 1.03%.

ADP said U.S. private payrolls increased by 38,000 in August, below the 47,000 consensus estimate. Initial jobless claims then rose to 206,000 for the week ending Aug. 29, while the four-week average reached 207,250. The figures kept attention on the labor market ahead of the August ISM services reading and the following day’s nonfarm payrolls report.

Precious-metals equities responded more sharply than bullion. Hecla Mining rose 8.69% to $20.77, adding roughly $1.1 billion in market value based on its cited $13.9 billion capitalization, even as silver moved less than 1%. Endeavour Silver gained 8.69% and Coeur Mining rose 6.04%, while Wheaton Precious Metals added 4.13% and Newmont climbed 2.06%. AngloGold Ashanti slipped 0.28%.

The dispersion across miners, chip suppliers, network-equipment companies, and former Bitcoin-focused data-center operators shows that traders are increasingly distinguishing between AI demand narratives and the companies able to turn that demand into contracted revenue. Ciena’s results add a networking test to that calculation: cloud build-outs require chips and electricity, but they also require the optical links that move data among increasingly large computing clusters.
