US stocks lose $3 trillion in selloff

2026-11-06 00:35

AnalysisMacro

A sharp reversal in U.S. equities spilled into cryptocurrency markets as a technology-led selloff erased roughly $3 trillion from the S&P 500's market capitalization and pushed Bitcoin below $76,000, its lowest level in seven weeks.

The Nasdaq 100 recorded its steepest one-day decline since the pandemic-era market turmoil of 2020, while semiconductor shares dropped nearly 11%, according to the market figures cited in the session. Bitcoin's fall triggered liquidations across leveraged crypto positions: market trackers recorded more than 166,000 accounts closed automatically, with $838 million in positions liquidated over 24 hours.

The moves followed an unusually abrupt shift in risk appetite. The Dow Jones Industrial Average had gained 1,600 points in the previous session after Democrats swept the U.S. midterm elections, helping add an estimated $1.2 trillion to the S&P 500's value. That advance was more than reversed a day later as sellers concentrated in the technology and chip sectors.

Technology shares drive the market reversal

Losses were initially contained to less than 1% in early U.S. trading before accelerating after 10 a.m. Eastern time. The market repeatedly staged brief rebounds that failed below earlier price levels, leaving a sequence of lower highs that reflected persistent selling rather than a single wave of profit-taking.

The technology concentration of the decline was striking. Semiconductor stocks fell close to 11%, far outpacing the roughly 2.5% decline reported for the S&P 500 excluding technology companies. That gap suggests the session was driven less by a broad reassessment of the U.S. economy than by a sharp repricing of companies tied to artificial intelligence spending, advanced computing and data-center expansion.

Concerns surrounding AI profitability, rising capital expenditures and free-cash-flow pressure returned as selling deepened. Large technology companies have committed substantial sums to chips, servers, power capacity and data centers, while traders have increasingly examined how quickly those expenditures can translate into durable earnings.

A widely viewed social-media post from Arizona Democratic representative Yassamin Ansari added to the policy discussion. Ansari called for a pause in advanced AI development, and the post drew more than 12 million views by the following day, according to the supplied figures. Other lawmakers publicly supported the message, raising the prospect that tighter oversight of advanced AI could become a more immediate consideration for companies whose valuations depend heavily on rapid deployment of the technology.

Policy proposals alone do not explain a market-wide move of this size, but the episode arrived during a session already focused on whether AI-linked valuations had moved ahead of proven cash returns.

Volatility and leverage intensify the decline

The Cboe Volatility Index, or VIX, jumped 63% in a single session, placing the increase among its five largest one-day gains on record, according to Cboe data cited in the report. The VIX measures expected short-term volatility in the S&P 500 through options prices, and a jump of that scale usually signals intense demand for protection against further equity declines.

Leverage had also risen before the selloff. U.S. leveraged exchange-traded funds received $15 billion in net inflows during October, the largest rolling monthly inflow in at least two years, according to the figures provided. Leveraged ETFs are designed to magnify daily market moves, meaning heavy inflows can add buying power during rallies but also accelerate selling when prices reverse.

That dynamic appeared across both equities and crypto. Borrowed positions are especially vulnerable during fast market declines because exchanges and brokers can close them automatically once collateral falls below required levels. The $838 million in crypto liquidations represents the forced closing value of positions, rather than a direct measure of losses across all digital-asset holders.

Bitcoin follows the risk-off move

Bitcoin's drop below $76,000 placed renewed attention on its relationship with high-growth technology stocks. The correlation between Bitcoin and equities can vary sharply across market cycles, but both markets tend to attract capital when traders are willing to take greater risk and can face simultaneous selling when volatility rises.

The session did not establish that digital assets and technology shares carry identical risk profiles. Bitcoin has its own supply structure, trading venues and market drivers. Yet the immediate reaction showed that leveraged crypto markets remain exposed when a broad retreat hits the most speculative corners of equities.

Spot-Bitcoin ETFs also saw approximately $1 billion in net outflows over several days, according to the supplied account. Such outflows can signal reduced demand from ETF holders, though they do not by themselves show whether selling came from long-term owners, short-term traders or portfolio rebalancing.

On-chain data cited in the report indicated that many Bitcoin buyers from the previous five months were holding below their purchase price after the decline. When a large group of recent buyers moves into unrealized losses, rallies can encounter additional selling as holders seek to exit near their entry levels.

A $70,000 level comes into focus

Traders are now watching the area around $70,000 as a major Bitcoin support level. Support refers to a price zone where demand has previously slowed declines. A decisive break below it could expose heavily leveraged positions to another round of liquidations, particularly if derivatives traders have clustered stop-loss orders beneath that level.

The equity shock arrived despite a historically favorable seasonal backdrop following U.S. midterm elections. Since 1950, the S&P 500 has risen by an average of 17.2% in the year after a midterm election, according to the long-run market statistic cited in the report. Historical averages offer little protection during a concentrated technology selloff, especially when leverage and uncertainty around AI spending are already elevated.

For crypto traders, the immediate issue is less the midterm-election pattern than whether volatility in technology stocks settles. A stabilization in semiconductor shares and AI-linked equities would remove one source of pressure from Bitcoin, while another leg lower in those markets could keep leveraged digital-asset positions exposed to rapid forced selling.
