US spot Bitcoin ETFs see weekly outflows

2026-10-15 11:50

U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds returned to net weekly outflows on Wednesday after losing about $262 million in a single session, as bitcoin fell below $82,000 following a U.S. inflation report. The reversal erased the previous day’s $176 million of net inflows and brought cumulative withdrawals for the week to roughly $151 million through Wednesday, according to SoSoValue data.

Bitcoin traded near $80,741 at the time of publication, down 3.2% over 24 hours, CoinGecko data showed. The move placed the largest cryptocurrency back under pressure after a period in which ETF flow data had offered only limited signs of stabilizing demand.

The latest withdrawals follow a much larger $681 million net outflow from U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs last week. Two consecutive weeks of withdrawals would contrast with the strong buying periods that helped establish the funds as a major channel for regulated U.S. exposure to bitcoin.

ETF flows do not represent every part of bitcoin demand, but they offer a daily measure of activity among institutions and other market participants using listed funds rather than holding the asset directly. A return to outflows during a price decline can amplify caution, since fund issuers generally need to sell underlying bitcoin when net redemptions exceed subscriptions.

Inflation release coincides with bitcoin sell-off

The ETF withdrawals arrived as markets absorbed a fresh U.S. inflation reading on Wednesday. The supplied data said September prices rose at an annual rate of 3.7%, reviving concern that interest rates could remain elevated for longer than traders had expected.

Higher borrowing costs and rising government bond yields often pressure risk-sensitive assets, including cryptocurrencies, by improving the appeal of cash and fixed-income instruments. Bitcoin’s slide below $82,000 reflected that broader reassessment across financial markets, though the available figures do not isolate how much of the decline came from the inflation release versus ETF-related selling.

The change in tone was visible across several U.S. spot crypto ETF categories rather than bitcoin alone. Ether, solana and zcash-linked funds all remained in negative territory for the week through Wednesday, suggesting the selling was tied to market conditions more broadly than to a single asset-specific event.

Ether funds record another large daily withdrawal

U.S. spot ether ETFs recorded around $130 million in net outflows on Wednesday, taking their weekly total to approximately $190 million, according to SoSoValue. The ether products had already posted $542 million in withdrawals last week and $138 million in the preceding week.

That pattern gives ether funds a sharper recent run of redemptions than bitcoin products. While bitcoin ETFs have alternated between inflow and outflow sessions, ether funds have now accumulated substantial withdrawals over three weeks based on the figures provided.

The divergence may partly reflect the different roles the assets play in portfolios. Bitcoin is commonly used as the primary cryptocurrency allocation in regulated fund products, while ether’s investment case relies more heavily on network usage, staking, decentralized finance activity and tokenization. In a market focused on inflation, rates and liquidity, traders may reduce exposure to assets viewed as having more complex growth assumptions.

Solana ETFs also extended their losing streak, recording $1.3 million in outflows on Wednesday. The withdrawal marked the eighth consecutive trading session of net outflows for the category, although the weekly total remained comparatively small at about $3 million through Wednesday.

Smaller ETF categories can see their daily figures swing sharply with relatively modest subscriptions or redemptions. The solana data therefore carries less dollar-weight than the bitcoin and ether flows, but eight straight outflow sessions point to a sustained lack of new demand through the listed products.

XRP is the exception among five tracked categories

XRP ETFs moved against the broader trend, attracting about $740,000 in net inflows on Wednesday. They were the only one of the five tracked crypto ETF categories to remain positive for the week through Wednesday.

The inflow was small beside the bitcoin and ether withdrawals, but it shows that ETF demand was not uniformly negative. Asset-specific positioning, product availability and the smaller size of some newer fund categories can produce different flow patterns even during a broad market retreat.

Zcash ETFs offered another mixed reading. The products took in $3.7 million on Wednesday but remained down $3.2 million for the week, meaning Wednesday’s inflow was insufficient to offset withdrawals earlier in the period.

The combined figures place the immediate focus on whether bitcoin and ether funds can halt their outflow streaks before the end of the trading week. A renewed run of withdrawals would extend the pressure created by last week’s $681 million bitcoin ETF exit and reinforce the market’s sensitivity to interest-rate expectations.

For now, the data show a market in which a weaker bitcoin price, inflation concerns and reductions in regulated crypto fund exposure are occurring together. XRP’s modest weekly resilience has not altered that broader defensive positioning, particularly in the two largest U.S. spot crypto ETF segments.
