The Lyon Biennale spans 11 venues in 2026

2026-09-15 14:46

The 18th lyon biennale of contemporary art will open on 19 September 2026 with nearly 400 works by 120 artists installed across 11 venues in Lyon and its metropolitan area, extending the exhibition beyond a single museum format and into heritage buildings, public infrastructure and cultural institutions.

Running through 13 December, the edition is titled Passer d'un rêve à l'autre, or “Passing from one dream to another.” Curated by Nichols, the biennale is structured as a route through the city, with Les Grandes Locos serving as the main exhibition site. The format places contemporary art in locations that visitors may ordinarily encounter for very different purposes, including a central car park and museums with collections spanning centuries.

The event arrives as the international art market faces a less buoyant market for high-value works. UBS reported global art sales of $57.5 billion, down 12% during its latest tracking period, while the number of transactions rose 3% to 40.5 million. That combination points to a market where activity has held up better at lower price levels than at the rarefied end of auctions and private sales.

Eleven venues connect Lyon’s museums and public spaces

Alongside Les Grandes Locos, participating venues include the Museum of Contemporary Art Lyon, known as macLYON; the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon; the Musée des Tissus; and the LPA Saint-Antoine car park.

The Musée des Tissus is scheduled to reopen for the biennale, adding a major textile and decorative-arts institution to a program centered on contemporary practice. Its inclusion creates a direct encounter between new work and a collection shaped by Lyon’s historic role in the silk trade, although organizers have not detailed how the site’s permanent holdings will be incorporated into the exhibition route.

The Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon provides another historically charged setting. The institution’s collections range from antiquities to modern art, giving the biennale a setting far removed from the conventional white-cube gallery. macLYON, by contrast, offers a dedicated contemporary-art context within the same citywide program.

The use of LPA Saint-Antoine car park gives the exhibition a more public and functional setting. Parking structures have increasingly been used for temporary installations and performance projects because they bring art into spaces designed around movement rather than contemplation. In Lyon, the venue broadens the biennale’s physical reach while making the route dependent on visitors moving between distinct parts of the city.

Artprice by Artmarket and La Demeure du Chaos, also known as the Abode of Chaos, are listed as partners. The biennale is under the artistic direction of Bertolotti, according to the program information.

Tickets are designed for repeat visits

A biennale pass will provide entry to all 11 venues, with one visit permitted at each location until the exhibition closes on 13 December. Prices range from €18 to €25, making the pass the principal ticketing option for visitors who want to see the full route rather than select individual sites.

Visitors under 15 will receive free admission. Students in the Auvergne-RhĂ´ne-Alpes region and art students are also eligible for free entry, while reduced prices will be offered to visitors under 26.

The three-month schedule may make repeat visits particularly useful. An exhibition dispersed across 11 venues asks more of audiences than a single-site show: travel time, opening hours and the scale of the program can turn a complete visit into several separate outings. The pass structure recognizes that reality, while also encouraging visitors to return to venues they may otherwise skip.

Guided tours will be available for an extra €3. Audio guides, also priced at €3, will be offered at three of the main venues. Organizers say the biennale is intended for audiences from age three and will introduce accessibility measures including easy-to-read exhibition labels.

Easy-to-read material generally uses shorter sentences, clearer layouts and more direct vocabulary to make information accessible to people with cognitive disabilities, learning difficulties or limited familiarity with museum language. For an event spread across complex sites, clearer interpretation could also help visitors navigate the curatorial thread connecting the works.

A softer market for trophy works frames the exhibition season

The UBS market figures supplied alongside the biennale announcement show a sharp divergence between the volume of art bought and sold and the value generated by the market’s highest-priced segment. Clare McAndrew reported that auction sales of works priced above $10 million fell 39% during the latest reporting period.

A decline of that size in the top auction bracket can heavily affect total market value because a relatively small number of trophy lots account for a large share of annual sales. The 3% rise in transaction numbers, meanwhile, suggests that lower-priced works and more frequent purchases continued to support market activity even as demand for ultra-expensive pieces weakened.

That pattern does not establish that a single type of buyer now drives the whole art market. It does show that the market’s lower and middle segments became more resilient than the top end during the period measured by UBS. Public exhibitions such as the Lyon biennale operate in a different part of the art ecosystem from auction houses, but they remain important meeting points for artists, curators, collectors, galleries and audiences when commercial confidence is uneven.

The Lyon biennale’s dispersed format also avoids treating contemporary art as something confined to specialist institutions. By placing works in museums, a reopening textile museum, heritage settings and a car park, the 2026 edition gives the city itself a central role in how audiences encounter the exhibition.

Visitors will be able to access the full program from 19 September through 13 December 2026.
