Tesla reports revenue miss but free cash flow jumps

2026-10-22 09:17

Tesla’s third-quarter results showed a company generating substantially more cash while its core vehicle business continues to face pressure, leaving its AI, robotaxi and robotics ambitions increasingly dependent on tighter capital allocation rather than simply higher spending.

The electric-vehicle maker reported $28.046 billion in revenue for the quarter, down 0.2% from a year earlier and below the $28.341 billion market consensus cited in the supplied results. Adjusted earnings per share reached $0.48, ahead of the $0.45 expectation, while GAAP net income attributable to common shareholders fell 43% year over year to $787 million.

Tesla shares initially fell more than 3% in after-hours trading following the release, before recovering to a decline of roughly 1.4% in late extended trading. The reaction reflected the mixed nature of the report: profitability and cash flow exceeded expectations, but revenue, operating income and automotive sales all remained under pressure.

Cash flow beats estimates as capital spending falls

Operating cash flow rose to $6.263 billion, compared with a $3.267 billion market expectation. Tesla spent $4.732 billion on capital expenditures, far below the roughly $7.771 billion expected, producing free cash flow of $1.531 billion.

That was a sharp reversal from negative free cash flow of $1.092 billion in the previous quarter. Earlier market expectations had called for Tesla to report negative free cash flow of $4.506 billion.

The cash-flow result was aided by lower capital spending rather than a broad recovery in revenue. Tesla also revised its 2026 capital-expenditure plan to about $20 billion, down from a previous target of more than $25 billion. The reduction gives the company greater financial flexibility as it funds data centers, AI systems, autonomous-driving development and robotics programs, while avoiding a faster drawdown of its cash reserves.

Tesla ended the quarter with $45.447 billion in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments, up about $1.923 billion from the prior quarter. That balance provides a substantial buffer for projects that may require years of investment before producing material revenue, particularly Robotaxi and Optimus.

Vehicle revenue declines despite stronger margins

Automotive revenue totaled $20.560 billion, down about 3% from a year earlier, though above the $20.272 billion market estimate. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles during the quarter, a year-over-year decline of roughly 2% and a sequential increase of about 1.3%. Production reached 464,391 vehicles.

The delivery figures indicate that Tesla’s vehicle business is no longer expanding at the pace that defined much of its earlier growth. The company has responded by emphasizing margin discipline and manufacturing efficiency, with mixed results across its financial statements.

GAAP gross margin improved to 19.6%, up about 160 basis points from a year earlier and around 170 basis points above expectations. Automotive gross margin excluding regulatory credits rose to 18.1%, increasing 270 basis points year over year and 180 basis points from the previous quarter.

Those margin gains came as regulatory-credit revenue declined sharply. Tesla reported $113 million in automotive regulatory-credit revenue, down about 73% from a year earlier. The decline means more of the segment’s profitability came from vehicle operations rather than the sale of emissions-related credits to other manufacturers.

Yet higher gross margins did not prevent a steep reduction in operating profitability. Tesla’s operating income dropped 56% year over year to $718 million, leaving the company with an operating margin of about 2.6%. Research and development expense climbed 69% to $2.761 billion as Tesla increased spending on AI, autonomous driving and robotics.

The figures place Tesla in a transitional position: it is protecting manufacturing margins more effectively, but the cost of developing new technology is consuming a larger share of the gains.

Robotaxi and Optimus move closer to production

Tesla reported that Full Self-Driving active subscriptions reached 1.74 million, up about 67% from a year earlier. The company also said its Robotaxi service accumulated nearly 2 million miles of unsupervised driving during the quarter, roughly eight times the prior quarter’s level.

Cybercab joined the Austin Robotaxi fleet on Sept. 3, according to Tesla, and the company listed the existing production line as having annual capacity above 125,000 units. Tesla also said Optimus had entered an early production ramp at its Fremont facility, where the first production-quality robots had begun coming off the line.

These programs remain expensive and operationally complex, but Tesla is now presenting them through production capacity, fleet activity and computing requirements rather than only long-range product demonstrations. The company plans to raise AI training compute to 400 megawatts by the end of 2026, a target that would require significant infrastructure, power and hardware commitments.

Tesla’s decision to reduce planned capital expenditures while raising R&D suggests management is concentrating spending on software, training systems and early-stage product development, rather than expanding physical infrastructure as aggressively as previously planned.

Energy margins rise as revenue misses estimates

Tesla’s energy generation and storage division delivered $2.881 billion in revenue, down 15.6% year over year and below the $3.720 billion market estimate. Energy storage deployments rose about 10% to 13.7 gigawatt-hours.

Despite the revenue miss, the segment’s gross margin improved markedly to approximately 33.1%, up about 170 basis points from a year earlier and 1,270 basis points from the prior quarter. Tesla reported energy gross profit of $954 million, compared with $1.073 billion a year earlier, while the previous quarter’s energy margin stood at 20.4%.

The result reinforces the division’s role as a higher-margin complement to Tesla’s vehicle operations, though the quarterly revenue decline shows it has not yet become large enough to offset softness in automotive sales.

Tesla also remains a closely watched corporate holder of Bitcoin after transferring 11,509 BTC to new wallets in late 2024, according to blockchain tracking cited in the supplied material. The quarterly earnings release did not provide a fresh update on those holdings. For cryptocurrency markets, Tesla’s immediate relevance lies less in portfolio activity than in its spending on AI infrastructure, where the company’s more restrained capital plan may temper expectations for a rapid acceleration in hardware and data-center demand.
