Taiwan Semiconductor reports record revenue in Q3 2026

2026-10-15 03:16

OpinionAnalysisMacro

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. heads into its Oct. 15 third-quarter earnings release with revenue already above its own forecast range, placing the spotlight on whether rising 2-nanometer production costs have begun to pressure profitability and whether demand can support another increase in spending on advanced chip capacity.

TSMC reported monthly revenue of NT$1.49424 trillion for July through September, a quarterly record and a 50.9% increase from a year earlier, according to the company’s revenue disclosures. Revenue rose 17.6% from NT$1.27038 trillion in the second quarter, reflecting sustained demand for chips used in artificial intelligence servers, high-performance computing systems and premium consumer devices.

Using the NT$32 exchange-rate assumption provided in TSMC’s prior quarterly outlook, third-quarter revenue works out to about $46.7 billion. That would exceed the company’s earlier guidance of $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion, although the final reported U.S. dollar figure will depend on the exchange rate used in the results.

The earnings call is scheduled for 14:00 Taiwan time, after the Taiwan stock market closes and before U.S. premarket trading begins. That timing means the initial reaction in TSMC’s Taiwan-listed shares and its U.S.-listed American depositary receipts is likely to emerge in the following sessions rather than during the conference call itself.

Margin performance will test the cost of the 2-nanometer ramp

Revenue has largely been disclosed through TSMC’s monthly sales updates, leaving gross margin as the most closely watched financial measure in the earnings report.

The company previously forecast third-quarter gross margin of 65% to 67%, compared with 67.7% in the second quarter. Operating margin was projected at 56% to 58%, down from 60.3% in the preceding quarter.

Wendell Huang, TSMC’s chief financial officer, told analysts during the company’s July earnings briefing that the initial ramp-up of 2-nanometer manufacturing would dilute gross margin by roughly three to four percentage points during the second half of the year. A process-node ramp refers to the period when a chipmaker moves a new manufacturing technology from development into volume production. Early output generally carries higher costs as factories improve yields, qualify equipment and scale capacity.

A gross margin above 67% would surpass TSMC’s guided ceiling and indicate that strong product mix, pricing or factory utilization offset more of the early 2-nanometer burden than expected. A result within the 65% to 67% range would support management’s earlier cost assumptions. A figure below 65% would raise questions over whether advanced-node production is becoming more expensive or whether other factors, including currency movements, are weighing on profitability.

Reuters reported on Oct. 8 that analysts surveyed by LSEG expected TSMC’s third-quarter net profit to rise 64% year over year to NT$740.8 billion. The final result will show how much of the sharp revenue expansion reached the bottom line after production, packaging and operating costs.

Fourth-quarter outlook may carry more weight than the revenue beat

TSMC’s fourth-quarter forecast will offer the clearest indication of whether its growth rate can hold above the already elevated third-quarter base. Market comparisons will likely focus on the midpoint of the company’s next revenue range relative to the roughly $46.7 billion implied by third-quarter sales using TSMC’s guidance exchange rate.

The company entered the second half with strong momentum. September revenue reached NT$511.86 billion, up 54.6% from a year earlier and down 0.6% from August, according to TSMC. The modest month-on-month decline followed a period of unusually rapid expansion, while the annual increase showed that demand remained far above the level seen in September 2025.

Management had said in July that full-year 2026 revenue in U.S. dollar terms would grow slightly above 40%. Through the first nine months of the year, TSMC’s revenue in New Taiwan dollars rose 41.1% from the same period a year earlier, according to the company’s disclosures. The third-quarter release will show whether the company remains positioned to meet or exceed that full-year view after accounting for currency effects.

Demand for AI-related computing remains central to the outlook. High-performance computing generated 66% of TSMC’s second-quarter revenue, making the segment by far the company’s largest source of sales. The category includes processors and related chips used in data centers, AI training systems and other compute-intensive infrastructure.

C.C. Wei, TSMC’s chief executive officer, said in July that advanced packaging capacity was “extremely tight” and was limiting customer growth. Advanced packaging combines multiple chips and components in a way that improves performance and data transfer speeds, making it essential for many leading AI accelerators. If capacity remains constrained, TSMC could face a situation in which demand exceeds its ability to convert orders into near-term revenue.

Spending plans show the scale of the capacity challenge

Capital spending will be another focus after TSMC raised its 2026 budget in July to between $60 billion and $64 billion, from a previous range of $52 billion to $56 billion. The increase pointed to a faster buildout of advanced manufacturing and packaging capacity as customers compete for supply.

The spending range is unusually large even for TSMC and leaves management with a balancing act. More investment would expand production capacity for leading-edge chips and packaging, potentially easing bottlenecks that have limited customer shipments. It also raises depreciation and start-up costs, which can weigh on margins before new facilities reach efficient production levels.

Any revised capital-expenditure outlook could therefore shape views on the supply of advanced chips well into 2027. A maintained or increased budget would suggest TSMC sees demand remaining strong enough to justify additional capacity. A more cautious stance could indicate that the company is prioritizing margin discipline or sees a slower pace of customer orders beyond the current AI buildout.

TSMC’s U.S.-listed ADR closed at $444.35 on Oct. 12, down 1.98% for a third consecutive declining session, according to market data cited in the supplied materials. The decline came as optical-networking companies Lumentum and Ciena each fell about 10% that day, underscoring how sensitive technology shares have become to signs of changing AI infrastructure demand.

TSMC’s results will offer a more direct measure of that demand than share-price moves elsewhere in the sector. Revenue has already established that orders remained exceptionally strong through September. The earnings release now needs to show whether the company can preserve its industry-leading profitability while spending heavily to produce the chips and packaging capacity customers are seeking.
