Standard Chartered launches RLUSD custody on XRP Ledger

2026-10-12 09:47

Standard Chartered has begun offering institutional custody for Ripple USD (RLUSD) on the XRP Ledger through its Dubai International Financial Centre branch, placing the stablecoin inside a regulated banking custody framework in the United Arab Emirates.

The service is live through Standard Chartered’s DIFC operation, which is regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority, according to the bank. The launch gives institutions using RLUSD an option to hold the token with a global bank rather than managing wallets and private keys internally or relying solely on specialist digital-asset custodians.

Standard Chartered is also working with Ripple and LMAX Group on a separate arrangement that could allow eligible RLUSD held in custody to be used as collateral for selected LMAX products. The proposed model would mirror the value of collateral held with Standard Chartered to LMAX without requiring the underlying RLUSD to move to the trading venue.

That structure could reduce the operational friction associated with transferring stablecoins between a custody provider and a venue before a trade can be placed. It also keeps the assets within the bank’s custody environment while giving a trading counterparty visibility over the collateral value available to support activity.

The LMAX integration has not launched. Standard Chartered said it remains subject to final documentation, testing, regulatory requirements and internal approvals, and it did not provide a timetable. The bank also limited the potential arrangement to certain LMAX products, rather than indicating that RLUSD would become eligible collateral across the group’s full offering.

A custody service with a trading-use case

Banks entering digital-asset custody have often focused first on secure storage, governance controls and institutional reporting. Standard Chartered’s proposed collateral-mirroring arrangement goes further by linking custody to an intended trading function.

In a conventional setup, a client may need to transfer assets from a custodian to a trading venue before those assets can be posted as collateral. That can introduce settlement timing, wallet-management and counterparty-risk considerations, particularly for firms operating across several jurisdictions.

Under the model described by Standard Chartered, RLUSD would remain in custody while a corresponding collateral value is recognized by LMAX for qualifying activity. The approach resembles established financial-market arrangements in which collateral is pledged, earmarked or represented without necessarily being physically transferred between parties for each transaction.

Whether that model becomes operational will depend on the completion of the legal, technical and regulatory work identified by the bank. Collateral arrangements require clear rules over custody, control, valuation, liquidation rights and what happens if one party defaults. Those details were not included in the announcement.

The planned connection also gives RLUSD a potential institutional use beyond settlement and payments. Stablecoins are increasingly being assessed by trading firms, market makers and corporate treasury teams as tools for moving collateral and settling transactions outside traditional banking hours. A regulated custody route can be particularly relevant for institutions whose internal policies require an established financial institution to hold client assets.

Dubai extends Standard Chartered’s custody footprint

The RLUSD announcement follows a series of steps by Standard Chartered and its digital-asset businesses to extend custody services across financial centers.

Last week, Standard Chartered’s Singapore unit said it planned to launch institutional cryptocurrency custody by the end of 2026. The bank described the Singapore initiative as an extension of operations already available in the UAE, Luxembourg and Hong Kong.

Dubai has become a focal point for such services as banks, crypto companies and trading platforms seek frameworks that combine digital-asset rules with established international financial-center infrastructure. Standard Chartered’s decision to provide the service through the DIFC, under Dubai Financial Services Authority oversight, positions the offering within a defined regulatory perimeter rather than as an offshore product.

Ripple’s RLUSD is a U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin issued by Ripple. Its availability on the XRP Ledger gives Standard Chartered a custody product tied directly to that blockchain network, while the planned LMAX arrangement would connect the asset to institutional trading infrastructure.

Zodia developments add to the bank’s strategy

Standard Chartered’s expanding role in custody comes alongside changes involving Zodia Custody, the institutional digital-asset custodian backed by the bank.

Bloomberg reported in April that Standard Chartered was considering bringing parts of Zodia Custody into its corporate and investment banking division. In May, Standard Chartered said its non-binding offer had been accepted. The parties have not publicly detailed the final structure or timing of any resulting transaction.

Zodia began offering institutional crypto-asset services in Singapore in September 2023 and later expanded into Hong Kong. In June, it secured a payment institution license in Luxembourg, enabling regulated stablecoin custody and transfer services across the European Union.

Those developments show how institutional custody is moving from a specialist service toward a product line that banks may integrate more closely with corporate banking, transaction services and collateral management. The commercial opportunity lies less in simply storing tokens than in connecting custody safely to the workflows institutions already use for trading, settlement and liquidity management.

For RLUSD, Standard Chartered’s Dubai service offers a regulated holding option immediately, while the proposed LMAX collateral model remains a potential next step. Its eventual rollout would determine whether the stablecoin can become part of a practical, bank-supported collateral process for institutional trading rather than remaining principally a custody asset.
