Stablecoin transfers grow outside US banking hours

2026-10-20 13:28

Stablecoin payment activity reached $482 billion in value during the first nine months of 2026, up 45% from the same period a year earlier, according to blockchain data platform Allium. The data points to a sharp expansion in onchain payments even as the average transfer became smaller, suggesting growth is increasingly coming from a larger number of routine transactions rather than only high-value movements.

Allium recorded 1.04 billion daily transfer actions by late September. Over the same period, the average payment size fell from $544 to $462, a decline of about 15%. That combination—more transfers alongside lower average values—has become one of the clearest signs that stablecoin networks are handling a wider range of payment activity.

The figures do not establish who is making each payment or whether every transfer reflects a consumer purchase. Blockchain transactions can include transfers between a user’s own wallets, treasury movements, trading activity, or automated smart-contract operations. Yet a falling average value alongside a rapidly rising transaction count is consistent with stablecoins being used for smaller-value transfers at greater frequency.

Smaller transfers drive a larger payments total

The $482 billion total covers the first three quarters of 2026, implying an average of roughly $1.8 billion in payment value per day across the period, based on Allium’s figures. The annual pace would exceed $640 billion if activity remained steady through the final quarter, although payment volumes can vary substantially from month to month.

A 45% year-on-year increase is particularly striking because the supply of stablecoins grew only modestly during the year, according to the supplied data. That points toward greater circulation of existing tokens: the same stablecoins are moving between wallets more often rather than sitting idle.

This measure is often described as velocity, referring to how frequently a unit of currency changes hands over a given period. Higher velocity can result from more merchant payments, remittances, payroll transfers, settlement between businesses, or activity within onchain financial applications. It does not automatically translate into higher demand for every blockchain’s native token, since transaction-fee structures differ widely across networks.

The declining average transfer size also places pressure on the view that stablecoin growth is primarily driven by large transfers among institutions or professional traders. Large-value transactions remain a substantial part of onchain activity, but their relative weight can fall when low-value transfers grow faster.

Network capacity becomes a practical constraint

Growing payment counts bring a more operational challenge: users and businesses need networks that can process transfers reliably and at predictable costs. Stablecoin payments are most useful for frequent, low-value transfers when fees do not consume a meaningful share of the amount being sent.

A $462 average transfer can absorb more transaction cost than a micro-payment, but repeated fees can still affect merchant margins, remittance services, and users making regular transfers. Networks with lower fees and higher throughput may therefore gain payment activity, while congested chains could see users and applications shift transactions to alternative networks or layer-2 systems.

Transaction volume alone does not show which network will retain that activity. Some chains may record high counts because applications bundle, subsidize, or automate transactions. Others may settle fewer but larger transfers. Fee revenue also depends on how each blockchain prices block space and distributes transaction fees.

The Allium data nevertheless gives businesses a reason to focus on usage patterns beyond token supply. A stablecoin’s circulating supply measures how many units exist, while transfers, payment values, and average transaction sizes show how the asset is being used. The 2026 figures indicate that use is becoming more intensive even without a comparable expansion in supply.

Payment data needs careful interpretation

The growth in daily actions should not be treated as a direct measure of the number of people using stablecoins. One individual or company can control numerous blockchain addresses, while a single application can generate large numbers of transactions automatically. Address counts and transaction counts are useful indicators of network activity, but they are not equivalent to verified user totals.

Nor does the data by itself show that stablecoins are replacing card networks or bank transfers. Payments on public blockchains may still involve conversions through wallets, payment providers, or centralized platforms before and after the onchain transfer. Consumer protections, refunds, compliance checks, and tax treatment also remain important factors in whether a payment method can move from niche use into regular commerce.

The more immediate takeaway from Allium’s figures is the changing composition of stablecoin flows. A 45% rise in payment value, 1.04 billion daily transfer actions by late September, and a reduction in average transfer size together describe a market where stablecoins are being moved more often and in smaller increments.

That pattern gives stablecoin issuers, payment companies, wallet providers, and blockchain developers a clearer commercial test: whether they can make repeated transfers cheap, fast, and simple enough for users who care less about crypto markets than about getting money from one place to another.
