S&P 500 earnings growth narrows to tech

2026-10-13 08:58

U.S. third-quarter earnings season opens with S&P 500 profits expected to rise sharply, but the gains are increasingly dependent on a narrow group of technology and semiconductor companies while the typical company faces slower growth, weaker margin expectations and rising cost pressure.

Consensus forecasts call for S&P 500 earnings per share to increase 27% from a year earlier, while Bank of America expects 32% growth to $93.50 per share. Early results have been strong on the surface: 85% of companies reporting so far have exceeded earnings-per-share estimates, compared with a historical average of 71%.

The stronger headline numbers have not translated into the usual market reward. Shares of companies that beat both earnings and revenue estimates in the second quarter of 2026 outperformed the S&P 500 by an average of 0.7 percentage points on the following day, according to Bank of America data. That was only half the historical average outperformance of 1.4 percentage points.

Companies missing both revenue and earnings targets underperformed the index by 3.3 percentage points, slightly worse than the usual market penalty. The split suggests traders have become harder to impress after several quarters of high beat rates and elevated expectations.

Large U.S. banks, including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo and Citigroup, are among the early reporters this week. Their results will offer a read on consumer credit, loan demand, trading activity and the effect of higher funding costs across the financial system.

Technology companies carry most of the projected growth

Goldman Sachs estimates that the 10 largest contributors to S&P 500 earnings growth will account for 68% of the index’s profit expansion in the third quarter. That concentration has risen from 47% in the first quarter and 48% in the second quarter.

Micron Technology is expected to contribute 19% of total S&P 500 earnings growth, according to Goldman Sachs, while Nvidia is projected to add 15%. Together, the two semiconductor-linked companies would account for about one-third of the index’s overall earnings increase.

Meta Platforms is expected to contribute 7% of growth, Alphabet 6% and Broadcom 5%. Higher oil prices related to the Middle East conflict also place Exxon Mobil, Chevron and Marathon Petroleum among the leading contributors.

The concentration creates a more demanding environment for equity markets. Strong results from a few companies can lift the S&P 500’s aggregate earnings figure, yet they do less to support the thousands of smaller businesses represented across the wider market and supply chain.

Goldman Sachs’ figures show the median S&P 500 company is expected to report 9% earnings-per-share growth in the third quarter, down from 14% in the second quarter. Analysts have also reduced their third-quarter margin forecast for the median company by 11 basis points since the quarter began. Every sector except information technology has seen margin estimates cut.

The index remains stronger than the typical stock

The uneven earnings outlook is reflected in market breadth. The S&P 500 sits roughly 2% below its record high, while the median stock in the index remains 17% below its own peak. That gap marks the weakest breadth reading since the dot-com era, according to the supplied market data.

A narrow market can remain resilient if the companies driving it continue to deliver profits and cash flow. It also leaves the index more exposed to disappointing results from the same small set of companies that have become central to earnings growth, particularly semiconductor manufacturers and large cloud platforms.

The second quarter illustrated the challenge in interpreting headline growth. S&P 500 earnings per share rose 50% year over year, but that growth rate falls to 32% when private-investment revaluation gains at Amazon and Google are excluded. Such gains can lift reported profits without reflecting operating income, and they can reverse if private-company valuations decline.

For companies whose shares are priced on long-term growth assumptions, the distinction between reported earnings, free cash flow and recurring operating profit is becoming more important.

AI spending is reshaping cash-flow expectations

Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Meta and Oracle are projected to increase capital expenditures by more than 90% year over year in 2026, according to the forecasts cited in the supplied data. Estimates for their 2026 capital spending have risen 70% over the past year.

Their combined capital expenditures are projected to exceed 100% of operating cash flow in 2026. That would mean the companies are committing more to data centers, chips, networking and other AI infrastructure than they generate from operations during the year, widening the gap between free cash flow and net income.

The spending supports demand for semiconductors and computing infrastructure, helping explain the outsized expected contribution from companies such as Nvidia, Micron and Broadcom. Yet it also raises the hurdle for cloud platforms to show that AI products can produce durable revenue and margins after the construction phase.

At the index level, the ratio of free cash flow to net income has entered a historically low range, linked largely to heavy spending by the largest companies. Earnings can continue growing while available cash generation weakens, especially when capital-intensive investment programs accelerate.

Cost pressure returns outside technology

Raw-material costs have re-emerged as a frequent topic on corporate earnings calls, with mentions reaching their highest level since mid-2022, according to the data cited in the supplied material. U.S. retail gasoline prices were about 30% higher year over year in the third quarter, raising operating costs for retailers, transportation companies and industrial businesses.

Energy remains a smaller expense than labor for the overall corporate sector. Labor spending accounts for about 40% of operating costs for U.S. companies, while energy represents less than 5%, according to the figures supplied. Cooling wage inflation offers some support for margins, but sustained energy-price strength would add pressure to fourth-quarter and 2027 estimates.

Consensus forecasts expect S&P 500 earnings growth to slow to 16% in 2027 from an expected 33% pace in 2026. Bank of America projects 12% growth for 2027. Those estimates assume that EBIT margins, a measure of profit before interest and taxes, do not contract outside the energy sector.

Information technology, particularly semiconductors, is expected to generate about 80% of 2027 earnings growth under sector forecasts. Communication services is projected to post an earnings decline from a higher comparison base.

For cryptocurrency markets, the earnings season provides a useful gauge of risk appetite and liquidity conditions rather than a direct signal for token prices. The clearest pressure point is whether expensive AI investment can convert into cash flow quickly enough to justify the earnings concentration now supporting U.S. equities.
