Solana launches Shanghai office and China tour

2026-10-15 12:01

Solana has resumed a highly visible push in mainland China, combining a new office in Shanghai Tower with a large LED display on the Bund and a developer-focused tour that avoids public discussion of token trading. The campaign marks a more carefully framed return after Solana canceled a planned Shanghai opening event in March, placing artificial intelligence, robotics and infrastructure at the center of its public agenda.

Footage posted on X on Oct. 14 showed a full-facing LED wall on Citibank’s Bund building illuminated in purple-blue colors, with “SOLANA” displayed vertically. The accompanying post read, “ni hao shanghai,” or “hello Shanghai.” The display appeared alongside images of Solana’s new Shanghai office, which Chief Product Officer Vibhu described as being in “the world’s highest commercially usable office space.”

Solana Foundation Chair Lily Liu reposted the office claim with the message, “It’s true.” The office is located in Shanghai Tower, the 632-meter skyscraper in Lujiazui, Shanghai’s financial district.

The combination of landmark office space and prominent outdoor advertising gives Solana an unusually public presence for a crypto-linked organization in China, where authorities have maintained sweeping restrictions on cryptocurrency trading and promotion. Changpeng Zhao, the former Binance chief executive known as CZ, reposted the footage and wrote that he was surprised Solana could operate the advertising and office, adding that BNB Chain had not taken similar steps.

The public display did not remain widely visible online for long. Short videos of the Bund light show became harder to find on domestic platforms including Douyin after circulating on social media, according to the original report. That outcome reflects the narrow space in which blockchain organizations can operate publicly in China: technology branding and developer outreach can gain visibility, while financial promotion aimed at mass retail audiences faces tighter scrutiny.

Shanghai Tower office follows March cancellation

Solana’s latest approach differs sharply from its earlier Shanghai plans. In March, the project announced a “Solana Shanghai Builder Station” at Shanghai Hongqiao Ali Center. Promotional materials for that event referred to support from government-related bodies in Minhang District and said local officials would speak during the opening.

The opening ceremony was canceled on March 13, and the preview post was removed from Solana’s official account. The team said the decision followed an assessment of market sentiment and external factors.

The October activities appear designed to reduce the chance of another clash between crypto branding and local sensitivities. Rather than leading with token markets, the new program is built around subjects Chinese policymakers and technology companies have emphasized heavily: AI agents, robotics, physical AI and high-performance computing infrastructure.

Physical AI generally refers to AI systems that can sense, reason about and act in the real world, often through robots, autonomous machines or connected devices. It offers a practical theme for developer events because it shifts the conversation toward software, hardware and data systems rather than cryptocurrency speculation.

Solana has scheduled “Solana Accelerate China” to begin in Shanghai on Oct. 16 before moving to Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing over the following week. The published agenda does not include token issuance, meme coins or secondary-market trading, three areas that would carry greater regulatory risk in China’s consumer-facing online environment.

Developer tour links blockchain to AI and robotics

The Shanghai kickoff is expected to include a discussion framed around “what the world can learn from China.” Listed participants include a lead associated with Alibaba’s Qwen AI model and a scholar from Fudan University, placing the event alongside Chinese academic and enterprise technology networks rather than traditional cryptocurrency market circles.

The remaining stops extend that format across cities with different strengths in China’s technology economy. Hangzhou is closely associated with internet platforms and AI development, Shenzhen is a major hardware and robotics center, and Beijing concentrates research institutions, large technology companies and policy influence.

Solana’s choice of themes also tracks an effort across the blockchain sector to present public networks as infrastructure for machine payments, data verification and automated software services. These applications remain early-stage, but they are more compatible with enterprise and developer messaging than price-oriented marketing.

A blockchain network can theoretically support software agents that make limited payments, verify machine-generated records or coordinate services without a central intermediary. Whether those concepts produce meaningful use depends on developers building working products and companies choosing to deploy them, rather than on promotional campaigns alone.

The Shanghai office gives Solana a fixed local base for that work. A physical presence can support meetings with developers, universities and technology companies more easily than short-term conferences, although operating in the country will require the organization to keep a clear separation between technical engagement and prohibited virtual-currency business.

Lily Liu brings China experience to foundation role

Liu’s role provides Solana with a leadership figure familiar with both China and U.S. technology networks. According to the article, she studied as an undergraduate at Stanford University and later pursued East Asian studies at Harvard University. Her previous work included a role at McKinsey’s Beijing office, serving as chief financial officer of Chinaco Healthcare and helping build a 500-bed private hospital in China.

Her first encounter with Bitcoin also came in Shanghai. The article says Liu was introduced to the asset in 2013 through Stanford alumnus Bobby Lee, described as a co-founder of BTC China. She later returned to Shanghai to speak about reading Satoshi Nakamoto’s “Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” after those early conversations.

That personal history helps explain why Solana’s China plans are centered on long-term technology relationships rather than a short promotional visit. The Shanghai Tower office and Accelerate China schedule suggest the foundation is testing whether it can build a durable developer presence under a framework that emphasizes computing and applied software.

The strategy will be judged less by the visibility of a Bund advertisement than by whether the four-city tour produces projects, technical partnerships and sustained developer activity that can operate within China’s tightly managed rules for crypto-related business.
