Reddit is scheduled to join the S&P 500 before the U.S. market opens on Aug. 18, a move that will require funds tracking the benchmark to buy millions of shares of the social-media company within a compressed trading window.
S&P Dow Jones Indices said Reddit will replace AvalonBay Communities in the S&P 500’s communication services sector. The substitution follows Equity Residential’s acquisition of AvalonBay, with the combined real-estate company expected to operate under the name Vivmark Residential.
The announcement triggered a sharp reaction in Reddit shares. The stock gained more than 11% in after-hours and premarket dealings, briefly trading above $178 as activity increased ahead of the index change.
Passive funds face a large one-day purchase
JPMorgan estimated that passive funds benchmarked to the S&P 500 would need to acquire roughly 16.7 million Reddit shares around the effective date. That figure equals about 2.8 times Reddit’s average daily trading volume of 5.98 million shares since its public listing, according to the bank.
Such demand does not necessarily reflect a new judgment about Reddit’s advertising business, user growth or valuation. Index funds are designed to mirror the composition of the S&P 500, so funds that track the benchmark must generally own a newly added stock close to its index weighting once the change takes effect.
The scale of the estimated purchase helps explain why an S&P 500 addition can produce an immediate share-price reaction. A large volume of required buying concentrated near the market open can temporarily tighten available supply, especially when short-term traders and options participants attempt to position ahead of passive funds.
Reddit’s public float, or the shares readily available for trading, will determine how smoothly that demand can be absorbed. JPMorgan’s estimate points to an unusually large turnover event relative to the stock’s normal daily activity, though the final amount bought by index funds will depend on their assets under management, tracking methods and the stock’s final index weight.
Reddit cleared the index profitability hurdle
Reddit’s entry follows a financial turnaround after its listing. S&P 500 eligibility rules require companies to meet size, liquidity and trading standards, while also posting positive cumulative GAAP net income over the latest four quarters.
Reddit recorded its first full-year GAAP profit as a public company in 2025, meeting a requirement that has prevented many fast-growing technology businesses from entering the index early in their public-market lives.
The company’s latest results provided further support for its case. Reddit reported $805 million in second-quarter 2026 revenue, up 61% from a year earlier, while earnings per share reached $1.25. The earnings result exceeded the $0.95 market expectation cited in the supplied estimates.
Advertising remains Reddit’s principal revenue source, but its data-licensing agreements have created a second business line tied to artificial-intelligence development. The company has said its platform contains more than 26 billion posts and comments, giving AI developers access to a large body of human-written discussion, opinions and niche community content.
Andrew Vollero, Reddit’s chief financial officer, reported net income of $530 million for the previous calendar year, according to the company’s financial disclosures. Reddit’s profitability has benefited from revenue growth and a sharp improvement from the losses it recorded before and around its market debut.
AI licensing adds to the advertising story
The AI-data business has become a central part of how markets assess Reddit. Wells Fargo analysts estimated that external data-licensing agreements could eventually generate $550 million in annual revenue, based on the supplied analysis.
Those contracts can be attractive because they monetize Reddit’s existing archive without requiring the company to place more advertising in users’ feeds. Their durability remains a major question: licensing revenue can be uneven, dependent on contract timing, and shaped by how AI companies decide to obtain, train on and compensate for online content.
Reddit’s advertising operation, meanwhile, depends on maintaining engagement and improving the commercial value of its audience. The company reported more than 130 million daily active users in its second-quarter results. Search engines’ increasing use of AI-generated answers could affect referral traffic to publishers and discussion platforms, making Reddit’s direct user engagement and search visibility closely watched measures after the index event passes.
Steve Huffman, Reddit’s chief executive officer, has pointed to the company’s market capitalization of more than $34 billion as evidence of its increased standing among public internet companies. S&P 500 membership would place Reddit alongside the largest and most widely held U.S. equities, expanding its ownership among retirement accounts, index portfolios and institutional strategies that use the benchmark.
Options activity could intensify the opening move
Trading interest has also moved into Reddit’s options market, where implied volatility on call options rose as demand increased. Implied volatility measures the price movement options traders expect over a given period; higher readings make options more expensive and often appear when traders are positioning for a major scheduled event.
Options flows can feed back into the underlying stock. Market makers who sell call options may purchase shares to hedge their exposure as Reddit’s price climbs, a process that can add buying pressure during a fast move. The effect can reverse if the stock declines or options positions are closed after the index addition.
Reddit’s replacement is a non-routine substitution rather than a regular quarterly S&P 500 rebalance. S&P Dow Jones Indices uses these changes to fill vacancies created by corporate transactions, often leaving a shorter period for passive funds and active traders to adjust.
The immediate test after Aug. 18 will be whether Reddit can sustain elevated trading volume after index-tracking funds complete their purchases. A lasting rerating would depend more heavily on the company’s advertising execution, user trends, AI-licensing income and profitability than on the one-time mechanics of joining the benchmark.
