Niu Lai film drives BSC meme token surge

2026-08-24 04:14

NFTMemeAltcoinDOGE

The BSC meme token named after the low-budget Chinese animation “Niu Lai” surged from roughly $45,000 in market capitalization to more than $50 million within five days as the film became an online sensation, then retreated sharply as early holders sold into the spike. The move tied the token’s valuation closely to a wave of short-video jokes, theater reaction clips and trending social-media posts rather than to any product or protocol development.

Blockchain records place the token’s contract creation on Aug. 13 at 11:59, by the address beginning 0xbeea and ending 7777, through the Flap platform. It migrated the following day at 16:07, when its market capitalization stood near $45,100. By the afternoon of Aug. 18, after the token appeared in Binance Alpha’s display and access interface, its valuation briefly exceeded $50 million before falling back toward $37.3 million in the main liquidity pool.

The reversal arrived after a period of unusually rapid turnover. The token had reached about $37.8 million in market value and traded near $0.037 by the latest figures supplied, down 15.5% over 24 hours and well below its weekend high. Its path illustrates how a meme asset can become a liquid, high-risk extension of an internet trend, with prices reacting to viral posts, trading screenshots and platform exposure as quickly as they react to the original cultural event.

A box-office failure became the joke

“Niu Lai” opened on Aug. 5 with 245 screenings but collected only 3,420 yuan in first-day ticket sales. By its ninth day, total box office was just 7,169 yuan, generated from 236 admissions, while theater schedules had been reduced to single-digit showings.

Those weak numbers became central to the film’s online appeal. Short clips focused on its rough animation, repeated dialogue and homemade visual style spread across Chinese social platforms. Theatergoers began filming reaction videos during screenings, turning the movie’s initially limited audience into a source of new material for reposts and commentary.

The phrase “Niu Lai box office 7,352 yuan, not even 10,000” reached Chinese social-media trending lists around Aug. 15. The reaction was immediate: video platforms and Weibo filled with posts mocking, remixing and defending the film, while media tallies for Aug. 14 recorded close to 40 Weibo trending topics connected to it.

Ticket sales rose alongside that attention. The film generated 484,000 yuan in single-day receipts on Aug. 15, more than a 6,000% increase from its earlier levels, while screenings expanded from 21 to 359. By around midday on Aug. 19, cumulative box office had passed 24.30 million yuan. By Aug. 23, ticket receipts had exceeded 45 million yuan, or roughly $6.7 million.

The film also entered the top 10 of China’s 2026 domestic animation box-office ranking by Aug. 18, when its cumulative receipts passed 18 million yuan. The online craze became sufficiently recognizable for copycat names such as “Mi Lai,” “Xue Lai” and “Ming Lai” to appear in brand-style posts.

Token rose with the online reaction

The token’s earliest move was comparatively modest. Its market capitalization first exceeded $500,000 on Aug. 15 at 00:15, following the spread of the low-box-office meme. A wallet labeled as associated with “yz” entered near a $450,000 valuation and published an analysis roughly 14 minutes later, according to the supplied on-chain timeline.

Momentum accelerated later that day. The token moved above $5 million at 19:00 on Aug. 15, then crossed $20 million at 03:15 on Aug. 16. Tracked wallet positions grew from a few hundred dollars during the early phase to thousands, then tens of thousands, as the film’s popularity expanded beyond its original joke about poor ticket sales.

The rise coincided with an increasingly participatory offline campaign. Themed staff appearances were reported at theaters in Guangzhou and Hangzhou, while audiences continued to produce reaction footage. Each new clip helped sustain the underlying attention cycle that token traders were watching.

By Aug. 16 through Aug. 18, the token was approaching $50 million and daily activity had become substantially more volatile. A weekend claim that theaters would fully ban the movie triggered a drop from about $29 million to around $10 million in market capitalization. Normal screenings continued, and the token later staged a V-shaped rebound. Twenty-four-hour trading volume reached about $37.60 million during that period.

Attention spread into stocks and speculative trading

The film’s sudden visibility also spilled into China’s A-share market on Aug. 17, the first trading day after its breakout. Luo Niu Shan hit its daily price limit, Jin Niu Chemical briefly touched limit up, Tong Niu Information rose about 8% intraday, and Gong Niu Group gained more than 2%.

The companies were linked largely through Chinese-language wordplay around “niu,” meaning cow or bullishness, rather than through direct business ties to the film. Tonghuashun’s popularity rankings placed Jin Niu Chemical first, while Gong Niu Group and Tong Niu Information were among the top five. The trading showed how the meme had moved beyond cinema and into ticker-symbol speculation.

The BSC token’s addition to Binance Alpha on Aug. 18 brought another burst of attention. Its market capitalization briefly set a new high above $50 million, but the price did not hold. A highly profitable wallet labeled Qwerty, associated with the handle @Quanterty, sold repeatedly into the rally while retaining more than half of its position.

That selling pattern points to the harder stage of a viral token’s lifecycle: once a meme becomes widely recognized, trading increasingly depends on profit-taking and short-term positioning rather than fresh discovery. “Niu Lai” continues to draw ticket buyers, but its associated token has already shown that online attention can create deep swings in both directions within hours.
