Meta shares fall as free cash flow turns negative

2026-10-23 10:22

Meta Platforms shares fell 6.98% to $648.85 in regular U.S. trading on Oct. 22 after the company reported that its quarterly spending on data centers, servers and finance leases exceeded cash generated from operations, pushing free cash flow to negative $2.12 billion despite 26% revenue growth.

The third-quarter figures place Meta’s AI infrastructure buildout at the center of the market reaction. Operating cash flow reached $32.79 billion, according to the company’s earnings release, but capital expenditures and finance lease principal payments totaled $34.91 billion. The resulting cash deficit came as Meta lifted the bottom end of its expected 2026 capital spending range by $5 billion, to between $135 billion and $145 billion.

Revenue for the quarter came in at $64.601 billion, supported by continued growth in advertising. Yet the combination of negative free cash flow, higher expected spending and a large legal charge shifted attention away from the headline sales increase and toward the cost of Meta’s effort to expand its AI computing capacity.

Ai spending exceeds quarterly operating cash generation

Free cash flow measures the cash remaining after a company funds its operating needs and capital investments. In Meta’s case, the negative figure does not indicate an immediate liquidity shortage: the company ended September with $82.45 billion in cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities.

It does show that Meta’s quarterly outlays on physical infrastructure have reached a level above the cash its core business generated during the period. The company has been buying servers and building data-center capacity to train, deploy and run artificial intelligence systems across its products.

Meta raised its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to $135 billion to $145 billion, from a previous range of $130 billion to $145 billion. Moving the lower boundary higher gives the market a clearer indication that elevated spending is expected to persist even if the final annual total remains within the previously disclosed ceiling.

The adjustment also makes the financing structure behind the spending more relevant. Meta’s reported cash balance gives it substantial flexibility to fund investment internally, while finance leases allow the company to spread payments for some equipment and facilities over time. Those lease principal payments nevertheless reduce free cash flow when they are paid.

The spending profile resembles a broader race among the largest technology companies to secure computing resources for AI models. For Meta, the immediate challenge is demonstrating that higher infrastructure costs will translate into revenue growth, advertising improvements, business messaging income or other returns that can justify the spending cycle.

Advertising revenue continues to carry the business

Meta’s advertising operation remained the company’s primary source of growth during the third quarter. Ad impressions increased 10% from a year earlier, while the average price per ad rose 14%, the company said. Together, those metrics drove a 26% increase in advertising revenue.

The figures suggest Meta was able to sell more advertising inventory while also charging more for each ad on average. That combination is particularly valuable for a platform business whose AI investments are partly directed toward improving ad targeting, content recommendations and measurement tools.

Rising ad prices can reflect stronger demand from advertisers, changes in the mix of ads sold, or improved performance from Meta’s systems. The company’s quarterly release did not separate the contribution from each factor. The overall result was enough to lift total revenue sharply, even as cash spending grew faster than operating inflows.

Legal settlement charge cuts reported operating profit

Reported operating profit fell 37% year over year to approximately $12.99 billion after Meta recorded $9.89 billion in legal-related expenses tied to settlement arrangements involving attorneys general from multiple U.S. states.

Excluding that charge, operating profit would have been about $22.88 billion based on the figures provided by the company. The distinction matters when comparing this quarter’s operating result with prior periods, because the legal expense was large enough to obscure the profitability generated by Meta’s underlying advertising business.

The settlement-related charge and the infrastructure buildout affect different parts of Meta’s financial picture. The legal expense reduced reported operating profit, while the surge in capital expenditures and lease payments drove the negative free-cash-flow result. Together, they created a quarter in which revenue momentum remained strong but headline profitability and cash generation weakened.

Class c proposal preserves future financing flexibility

Meta also disclosed plans to create a new class of non-voting Class C common stock. The company intends to distribute the shares on a pro-rata basis to holders of Class A and Class B shares, with the distribution targeted for January 2027. Meta said it will announce the record and payment dates later.

The initial distribution would not bring new cash into the company. Meta said the Class C shares could later be used for financing, employee compensation and potential acquisitions, giving management another form of equity that would not carry voting rights.

Any dilution would depend on whether Meta subsequently issues additional Class C shares, the price of those issuances and their purpose. The structure could give the company more flexibility if its AI spending program, acquisition plans or compensation needs require additional capital, while protecting the voting influence attached to its existing share classes.

Crypto markets may watch technology risk sentiment

Meta’s results offer a reminder that AI-related equity valuations increasingly depend on whether spending plans can be funded without eroding cash generation for extended periods. Sharp reactions in major technology stocks can affect risk appetite across markets, including digital assets, but they do not establish a direct trading signal for Bitcoin or smaller tokens.

The supplied market figures placed Bitcoin’s market capitalization at $1.638 trillion on Oct. 22, but market size alone does not make an asset a reliable shelter during equity declines. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can experience substantial volatility during periods of rapid repricing in technology shares and broader risk assets.

Claims that Meta’s spending outlook directly caused a move in tokens such as NEAR would require market-specific evidence beyond the company’s earnings report. The clearer near-term development is Meta’s own balance between a still-growing advertising machine, a large cash reserve and an AI investment program whose quarterly cost has now exceeded operating cash flow.
