Luxor raises 16 million to expand AI infrastructure

2026-10-27 14:44

Luxor Technology has raised $16 million to expand from bitcoin mining infrastructure into AI computing, funding a strategy built around the overlap between power-intensive mining operations and the growing market for GPUs, AI servers, cloud capacity and computing-related financial contracts.

CMT Digital led the financing round, with participation from Canaan, MicroBT, Halo, Steelhead and unnamed angel participants, according to Luxor. The round combined newly issued capital with secondary share sales, giving the company funds for expansion while also allowing existing holders to sell part of their stakes.

Luxor executive Vera said the primary component of the round was issued as preferred equity. The secondary component included both preferred and common shares. The company did not disclose how the $16 million was divided between the two components, the valuation attached to the transaction, or whether any participating backers received board, observer or advisory rights.

The company began raising capital in August and closed that part of the financing in October, Vera said. Luxor’s last priced equity round took place in 2021. Before the latest transaction, it had raised $6.575 million of primary capital across three rounds.

Mining infrastructure moves into AI compute

The financing follows Luxor’s September launch of Luxor AI, an initiative that applies the company’s mining-related services to AI and high-performance computing. Its plan reaches beyond selling hardware: Luxor is building offerings across equipment sourcing, cloud computing, energy services, data products and financial contracts tied to computing capacity.

Luxor co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Hansen said in a company statement that compute markets are converging around common needs for machines, power sites and capital. That overlap gives mining-service firms a potential route into AI infrastructure, particularly where they already understand power procurement, large-scale hardware deployment and volatile equipment markets.

Bitcoin mining and AI workloads use different types of chips. Mining typically relies on application-specific integrated circuits, or ASICs, designed to perform Bitcoin’s hashing function, while AI applications primarily use graphics processing units and specialized AI servers. Yet both sectors compete for reliable power, cooling, data-center space, hardware supply and financing.

Luxor’s existing bitcoin business includes a mining pool, machine-management software, an ASIC hardware trading desk, energy services and hashrate derivatives. Under Luxor AI, the company is extending that operating model to GPU hardware, cloud services, energy and contracts linked to computing demand.

The company said some of the new proceeds will support its hardware unit, which sources GPUs and AI servers for customers. The push could allow Luxor to use relationships developed in the mining equipment market to address a different hardware category, although GPUs and ASICs have distinct manufacturers, supply chains and customer bases.

Cloud tools and compute-linked contracts

Luxor also plans to expand its cloud platform, which provides sandboxes and runners for AI agents as well as AI-assisted code review. Sandboxes are isolated software environments where developers can test code or agents without affecting production systems, while runners provide the computing environment used to execute tasks.

Luxor reported that its platform processed 1.8 million workloads as of September this year. The company did not provide revenue figures for the AI unit or specify how many of those workloads came from external customers.

A further portion of the financing is intended for compute derivatives trading and market making connected to compute-rental indexes. Luxor said the proposed contracts would settle in cash, rather than through delivery of hardware or cloud capacity.

That approach resembles Luxor’s existing work in hashrate derivatives, where contracts are tied to Bitcoin mining output or related benchmarks. Applied to AI infrastructure, cash-settled contracts could give cloud users, hardware suppliers and compute providers a way to manage exposure to changes in rental prices without purchasing machines or reserving capacity directly. The usefulness of such products will depend on whether their underlying indexes attract enough market participation to produce credible reference prices and sufficient trading liquidity.

In August, Luxor introduced an AI Hardware Price Index through its Hashrate Index data platform. The index tracks GPU node prices, providing a reference point for a market where server configurations can vary widely by chip, networking equipment, memory and regional availability.

Existing scale provides the base for expansion

Vera said Luxor’s hardware desk has traded more than $1 billion in ASIC mining equipment. The company’s energy business services more than 75 megawatts of load across the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, known as ERCOT, and the Southwest Power Pool, or SPP.

Those operations place Luxor in two power markets that have become central to discussions around flexible demand from energy-intensive computing. Mining firms can often reduce power use when electricity prices rise or grid conditions tighten, while AI data centers usually seek more consistent availability. Luxor’s attempt to serve both markets will test how effectively a mining-oriented energy model can support customers with different uptime requirements.

The company said it has expanded from 11 employees at the time of its 2021 equity round to 106 employees. Vera said most of that growth was funded with cash generated by the business rather than outside financing, a point that distinguishes the latest raise from a capital-intensive buildout dependent solely on venture funding.

Luxor plans to add about 12 employees across engineering, product, sales and marketing before the end of the year. The hiring suggests the company’s immediate focus is on building products and winning customers rather than constructing and owning large data centers itself.

Canaan and MicroBT’s participation links the round to two established ASIC manufacturers, while CMT Digital adds a financial backer with experience in digital-asset markets. The mix fits Luxor’s effort to connect physical computing infrastructure with trading and data products, though the company’s expansion now depends on proving that its mining-market expertise can translate into sustained demand for AI hardware, cloud tools and compute-price risk management.
