HashKey joins EnsembleTX to test tokenised deposits

2026-11-02 14:50

HashKey Holdings Limited has joined the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's EnsembleTX pilot as an industry pioneer, placing the digital asset group among participants testing tokenised deposits in transactions involving fund transfers, investment products, digital assets and corporate treasury operations.

The company, listed in Hong Kong under stock code 3887.HK, said on Nov. 2 that it will use the programme to examine how tokenised commercial bank deposits could operate in business workflows rather than solely in technical demonstrations. Its proposed tests include settlement connected to digital asset transactions, subscriptions and redemptions of investment products, transfers between affiliated trading venues, and cross-border treasury management.

The participation gives HashKey a route to test whether bank-issued digital money can connect the company's trading, asset-management, tokenisation and blockchain infrastructure activities with regulated banking systems. The work is being conducted through EnsembleTX's real-value transaction pilot, a controlled HKMA environment designed to move tokenisation projects closer to commercial use.

Testing deposits in asset settlement and treasury operations

Tokenised deposits are digital representations of commercial bank deposits recorded on a blockchain or similar distributed ledger. Unlike a payment token issued independently by a private company, they represent a claim on a bank deposit and are intended to operate within existing banking and regulatory frameworks.

HashKey said it will focus on whether those deposits can support payment and settlement processes around tokenised financial products. Such products could include tokenised funds and other assets whose ownership records are represented digitally.

The company also plans to explore cross-border transfers between its affiliated trading venues. Moving funds across entities in different markets often relies on separate banking cut-off times, reconciliation processes and correspondent-bank arrangements. A tokenised-deposit model could shorten parts of that process if participating institutions can exchange and recognise the digital claims through interoperable systems.

Corporate treasury is another proposed area of work. Large companies and financial groups commonly move cash among subsidiaries, trading operations and custodians while maintaining liquidity across currencies and jurisdictions. HashKey said it will assess cross-border treasury use cases as well as the technical requirements for integration with banks and other financial institutions.

The emphasis on interoperability may prove as consequential as the deposit token itself. A deposit token confined to one institution's internal platform would have limited use in multi-party settlement. For the model to work across market participants, banks, trading venues, asset issuers and service providers need systems that can exchange transaction instructions, verify balances and complete transfers under common operating rules.

HKMA moves from sandbox work to real-value transactions

The tests sit within the HKMA's Project Ensemble programme, launched in August 2024 to support experimentation with tokenisation. The project has brought together banks, regulators and industry participants to study the infrastructure required for tokenised money and tokenised financial assets.

In November 2025, the HKMA introduced EnsembleTX as Project Ensemble's pilot phase for real-value transactions involving tokenised deposits and digital assets. That step shifted the initiative beyond conceptual architecture and sandbox experimentation, although the programme remains a controlled pilot rather than a general public rollout of tokenised bank money.

EnsembleTX's initial phase focuses on tokenised-deposit use in tokenised money market fund transactions, as well as real-time liquidity and treasury management. Money market funds are a practical early use case because subscriptions and redemptions require the exchange of cash and fund units, creating a clear opportunity to test linked payment and asset-delivery processes.

The HKMA has also outlined an eventual framework for interbank settlement of tokenised-deposit transactions using tokenised central bank money, or CeBM, on a 24-hour basis. Central bank money is the settlement asset issued by a monetary authority, while tokenised deposits would be issued by commercial banks. Combining the two could provide a route for banks to settle obligations between themselves while customers use bank-issued digital deposits in transactions.

A 24/7 settlement design would differ from many conventional payment and securities systems, which operate with business-day calendars, scheduled processing windows and end-of-day reconciliation. Whether those gains can be achieved in practice will depend on legal treatment, risk controls, liquidity arrangements and the ability of participating institutions to operate continuously.

HashKey builds on previous HKMA participation

HashKey said it has previously participated in the HKMA's Project Ensemble Architecture Community and Ensemble Sandbox. It is also a member of the HKMA's Tokenised Bond Expert Group, which has examined the development of tokenised debt markets in Hong Kong.

Those earlier roles provide the company with experience in the policy and technical discussions surrounding tokenised assets, but EnsembleTX gives the work a more transaction-focused setting. HashKey's planned use cases extend from tokenised investment products to the movement of funds required to settle them, addressing a gap that can arise when a digital asset is available on-chain but its payment leg remains dependent on conventional processes.

HashKey Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Xiao said the next stage of tokenised finance would centre on embedding tokenisation in activities including fund transfers, asset transactions and settlement. The company described EnsembleTX as a mechanism for taking tokenised deposits from technical validation toward real-value transactions aimed at improving financial-market efficiency.

The pilot does not guarantee that any particular model will become a standard in Hong Kong. Its immediate value lies in testing the operational questions that determine whether tokenised deposits can function beyond a limited demonstration: how banks issue and redeem them, how institutions connect their systems, how transactions are settled, and how cross-border transfers are managed.

For HashKey, the programme places its digital-asset operations inside a regulatory-led experiment focused on the payment infrastructure surrounding tokenised markets. If the tests demonstrate reliable integration between bank deposits, tokenised assets and institutional treasury systems, they could give Hong Kong market participants a clearer path for settling digital financial products with regulated commercial bank money.
