Google Cloud runs Puffer UniFi Gateway operator

2026-09-23 07:26

Google Cloud has joined Puffer UniFi as a Gateway operator for Puffer Preconf, placing the cloud provider inside the rollup’s transaction execution path rather than in a conventional infrastructure-support role. Puffer announced the arrangement on Sept. 22, describing UniFi as the first rollup set to use a Google Cloud Gateway.

The Gateway is designed to process transaction flow, issue execution preconfirmations, and deliver batches for eventual settlement on Ethereum. That gives Google Cloud a defined operational role in a system intended to offer users faster certainty about how a transaction will execute before it reaches Ethereum’s base layer.

Puffer’s model targets a persistent trade-off in Ethereum scaling: rollups can use centralized sequencers to provide quick responses, but those operators can become both a technical bottleneck and a concentrated source of sequencing revenue. UniFi instead uses a based rollup design, which anchors sequencing authority to Ethereum’s Layer 1 validator set while outsourcing certain high-speed duties to Gateway operators.

Gateways take on the low-latency execution role

Puffer Preconf separates real-time transaction handling from the final settlement process on Ethereum. Ethereum’s block production cadence, roughly one block every 12 seconds, is suitable for settlement but creates friction for applications that need rapid confirmation of execution outcomes.

A Gateway is intended to bridge that gap. It can sequence transactions and make a signed commitment about their execution against a predetermined state, according to Puffer’s description of the system. This goes beyond a standard inclusion preconfirmation, where an operator promises that a transaction will appear in a future block but does not necessarily commit to the precise execution result.

That distinction matters for applications whose users need to know whether a trade, liquidation, payment, or order has been accepted before Ethereum finalizes the batch. Perpetual futures exchanges, central limit order books, lending protocols handling liquidations, and payment systems are among the applications Puffer identifies as potential users of execution preconfirmations.

The design aims to let these applications receive faster execution assurances without moving final settlement and security away from Ethereum. It also gives rollup teams a way to seek lower latency without retaining a single, centralized sequencer as the sole party controlling transaction ordering.

Google Cloud’s involvement puts an enterprise infrastructure operator in the part of the architecture where uptime, networking performance, and rapid transaction handling are central. The partnership does not turn Google Cloud into an Ethereum validator or alter Ethereum’s settlement process; its Gateway would act on behalf of validators through Puffer’s delegation and restaking framework.

Based sequencing shifts duties back toward Ethereum

Puffer UniFi is built as a based rollup, a model in which Ethereum validators retain the authority associated with ordering rollup transactions. In conventional rollup designs, a dedicated sequencer commonly orders transactions, submits batches, and captures associated fees. That can create a smoother user experience, though it also leaves applications dependent on the sequencer’s availability and conduct.

Based rollups seek to connect ordering more closely to Ethereum’s existing validator set. Puffer argues that the model can better align rollup activity with Ethereum while reducing reliance on a standalone operator.

The approach comes with practical constraints. Ethereum validators are not naturally configured to handle the additional computing, networking, and operational workload of low-latency rollup execution. Asking validators to perform those tasks directly could increase hardware demands and introduce a different form of centralization pressure, favoring operators able to run more specialized infrastructure.

Puffer Preconf assigns those performance-sensitive tasks to Gateways while keeping the underlying sequencing authority tied to validators. The system is built on EigenCloud, the platform formerly known as EigenLayer, according to Puffer. Restaking and delegation mechanisms allow a Gateway to perform duties for validators while putting economic collateral behind its commitments.

Stakes and penalties are meant to enforce commitments

Puffer’s enforcement design has two routes intended to hold Gateways accountable when they preconfirm transactions.

First, a Gateway must post stake to participate in lookahead scheduling, the process that assigns upcoming transaction-handling windows. If the Gateway does not submit its batch to Ethereum during its allotted period, a subsequent Gateway can submit the batch and trigger penalties against the failed operator.

Second, users who receive a signed preconfirmation receipt could use that receipt to seek compensation if the Gateway fails to honor the commitment. The structure seeks to replace the informal trust users often place in centralized sequencer operators with signed promises backed by collateral and specified penalties.

The model also distributes revenue among several participants. Puffer says preconfirmation and sequencing-related fees would be shared among the rollup operator, Gateway, Ethereum validator, and protocol. That arrangement gives validators an economic role in the rollup’s transaction flow while compensating the Gateway for providing the infrastructure and responsiveness needed for execution preconfirmation.

The revenue split addresses a difficult incentive question for based rollups. If a rollup hands sequencing authority toward Ethereum, its own team may lose a revenue stream that centralized sequencers typically control. Sharing fees across the participants could make the model more viable, though its effectiveness will depend on whether the returns cover the operational costs and collateral requirements placed on Gateway operators.

A production test for preconfirmation infrastructure

The Google Cloud deployment will serve as a practical test of whether the architecture can operate under production transaction traffic. Preconfirmation systems need more than fast servers: they must maintain reliable state, issue commitments that can be enforced, and submit valid batches within the time windows required by the protocol.

The arrangement also tests whether a cloud provider can participate in a decentralized execution framework without becoming an unchecked central intermediary. Puffer’s answer rests on the use of delegated authority, stakes, signed commitments, penalties, and the ability for later Gateways to step in when an assigned operator fails to perform.

Puffer has indicated that its preconfirmation module could eventually be made available to other rollups. UniFi’s deployment will therefore provide evidence on the operational costs, reliability, and incentive design of a model that tries to combine Ethereum-based sequencing with the responsiveness expected from high-speed onchain applications.
