Former Hack VC partner Hsin Ju Chuang dies

2026-09-24 12:11

Former Hack VC partner and platform head Hsin-Ju Chuang was found dead on Aug. 24 inside a vehicle near an Interstate 15 off-ramp in California’s Mojave Desert, two days before she had said she planned to release documents related to an employment dispute with the crypto venture firm.

Chuang, 37, was pronounced dead after the California Highway Patrol responded at 9:47 p.m. near the southbound I-15 and Field Road, according to the San Bernardino County coroner’s public log. Authorities have not released a cause or manner of death, and public records have not classified the case as criminal.

Her death followed a public break with Hack VC, where Chuang had been a partner and led platform operations. Earlier on Aug. 24, she wrote that she had rejected a settlement offer containing confidentiality provisions and intended to publish materials retained from her time at the firm and the dispute that followed.

Planned disclosure followed rejected settlement

In her final public post, Chuang described an employment conflict that she said had continued through nearly a year of lawyer-to-lawyer contact and was heading toward private mediation. She wrote that she eventually dismissed her attorney and declined a confidential financial settlement.

Chuang alleged that Hack VC co-founder Alex Pack and partner Daniel Bulaevsky pressured her as she tried to disengage from projects and leave the firm. She said the pressure included threats of “industry blacklisting,” an allegation that the firm disputed.

Hack VC said it would not discuss the underlying dispute publicly, citing privacy. Pack later wrote that he had not spoken directly with Chuang for more than 10 months.

Chuang’s account also included descriptions of severe work-related strain. She said she had worked 13 to 14 hours a day, six days a week, while sleeping between zero and four hours a night. She wrote that she developed Graves’ disease, hyperthyroidism and severe insomnia during her tenure, and referred to a prior suicidal episode.

Those statements were Chuang’s personal account of her experience. Authorities have not connected her death to the employment dispute, her health disclosures, or any other explanation.

A senior departure at a large crypto venture firm

Chuang’s former employer is among the larger venture firms focused on cryptocurrency and blockchain companies. Hack VC has backed projects including EigenLayer, Goldfinch, Mysten Labs, which developed the Sui blockchain, io.net, Elixir and Berachain.

The firm reported roughly $4.25 billion in assets under management in 2024 and about $7 billion by the third quarter of 2025. By the end of 2025, it had about $5.5 billion in committed capital, according to figures included in the material surrounding the dispute.

Hack VC invested about $50 million across 29 deals during 2025, while 26 companies in its portfolio issued tokens, according to those figures. Rail, an earlier Hack VC investment, was acquired by Ripple for $200 million.

That scale places senior staff disputes under greater scrutiny than a typical workplace disagreement. Venture firms often operate through close professional networks, where employment history, deal access and personal reputation can carry long-lasting consequences. Yet the available public records do not establish the specifics of Chuang’s claims or the terms proposed in any settlement.

Physical threats remain a separate concern

Chuang’s death also emerged during a year of increased attention on physical crimes involving cryptocurrency holders, though no authority has linked her case to such incidents.

Chainalysis said in an August report that it had recorded 46 violent incidents targeting cryptocurrency holders around the world by the end of June 2026. The blockchain analytics company said 12 of those incidents ended with a payment and that identified stolen crypto assets exceeded $30 million.

The reported attacks frequently involved direct coercion rather than technical theft. Chainalysis said home invasions accounted for 37% of recorded cases, while kidnappings represented about 52%. Such crimes can target people believed to control accessible digital assets, seeking wallet credentials, private keys or transfers made under duress.

The figures underline a practical limitation of cold storage and other digital-security measures: protecting a wallet from online intrusion does not remove risks faced by the person controlling it. Security specialists commonly recommend limiting public disclosure of holdings, reducing the amount of identifying information attached to cryptocurrency activity and avoiding single points of control over substantial funds.

For companies, the same concern extends beyond founders and high-profile executives. Employees who appear in investment announcements, token launches, conference programs or online discussions may acquire an unintended public profile. Clear internal security procedures, restricted access to personal information and appropriate support for staff facing harassment can reduce exposure without turning routine professional visibility into a personal safety risk.

Authorities have provided no further public details about the circumstances surrounding Chuang’s death. The San Bernardino County coroner’s record remains the clearest official account: a highway patrol response near Field Road on Aug. 24, followed by confirmation of her death.
