Former Hack VC partner Hsin-Ju Chuang, 37, was found dead on Aug. 24 near the southbound Fields Road off-ramp on Interstate 15 in California’s Mojave Desert, days after publishing allegations that senior figures at the cryptocurrency venture firm pressured her to remain at work through a serious health crisis. The California Highway Patrol’s Barstow office is investigating, while the cause of death has not been determined.
Authorities identified Chuang after a woman from Las Vegas was found near the remote I-15 off-ramp, according to a separate Sept. 6 report on the case. The San Bernardino County medical examiner’s office has indicated that investigations requiring toxicology and histology tests can take six months to a year.
Chuang’s death places scrutiny on allegations of workplace conduct at Hack VC, a venture firm with roughly $700 million in assets under management and stakes in projects including EigenLayer, Goldfinch, Mysten Labs, io.net, Elixir, Berachain and Stable. Hack VC had not issued a direct public statement addressing either Chuang’s allegations or her death as of the latest updates provided.
Chuang described pressure during a health crisis
Earlier on Aug. 24, Chuang published a lengthy public statement accusing Hack VC co-founder Alexander Pack and partner Dmitry Bulaevsky of pushing her to continue working during a period of deteriorating health. She alleged that they discouraged her from resigning while she was responsible for promoting Hack Summit and related events during the KBW conference period.
Chuang wrote that her workload reached 13 to 14 hours a day, six days a week, while she slept four hours or less each night. She said she had been diagnosed with diffuse toxic goiter, hyperthyroidism and severe insomnia, conditions that she linked to the strain she described in the post.
Her statement alleged that the pressure contributed to a suicide attempt. Chuang said she repeatedly asked to leave the firm but was not allowed to do so for nearly a month while conference-related work continued.
The allegations have not been adjudicated in court. They nonetheless raise questions that extend beyond one employment dispute: cryptocurrency venture firms often operate with lean teams, high-speed deal cycles and event schedules that blur the boundary between fundraising, portfolio support and around-the-clock market activity. Those conditions can make internal safeguards particularly consequential when an employee reports a medical emergency.
Insurance and compensation allegations
Chuang also alleged that her departure became entangled with health-insurance coverage. In her post, she said that after her suicide attempt she delivered a written message stating that she did not intend to sue and only wanted to leave, provided there would be no retaliation or reputational attacks.
About a month later, Chuang said the firm delayed handling her COBRA health-insurance continuation. COBRA allows eligible former workers in the United States to continue employer-sponsored coverage for a limited period, usually at their own expense. Chuang wrote that the issue remained unresolved for nearly four months until she retained a lawyer to seek compliance.
Her account included details about compensation that suggest a rapidly changing role at the firm. She said her pay rose from $50,000 during an earlier part-time period to $300,000, with a $30,000 bonus and an additional promised incentive connected to an equity arrangement. Chuang also wrote that she had been told she could join the firm’s GP management ranks, though she said no final confirmation was given as her health worsened.
Chuang said she later rejected a settlement containing a confidentiality clause, dismissed her lawyer and intended to release evidence connected to her account by Aug. 26. Her post was updated until about 1 a.m. on Aug. 24 and included two cryptocurrency wallet addresses for donations.
Investigation remains open in the Mojave Desert
The circumstances surrounding Chuang’s death remain unclear. Authorities have not said whether heat exposure, illness, a vehicle problem or another cause may have contributed.
Weather information cited in the Sept. 6 report placed daytime temperatures near 42 degrees Celsius, or about 108 degrees Fahrenheit, in the area on the day Chuang was found. Overnight temperatures were reported near 27 degrees Celsius, or roughly 81 degrees Fahrenheit. Those conditions underscore the risks of being stranded or incapacitated in the Mojave Desert, especially along sparsely traveled highway stretches.
The CHP Barstow office covers about 130 miles of Interstate 15 from Apple Valley to the Nevada state line. The agency describes it as California’s second-largest patrol area, a jurisdiction that includes long and isolated sections of desert road where incidents can take time to reach public attention.
No official finding has linked the workplace allegations in Chuang’s post to her death. The investigation and medical examination will determine the factual basis for any conclusion.
Portfolio links face reputational scrutiny, not automatic operational risk
Hack VC’s portfolio gives the case relevance across several highly visible crypto ecosystems, particularly projects that rely on venture funding for team expansion, liquidity arrangements and long-term product development. Yet a public controversy involving a backer does not automatically alter a protocol’s code, treasury, governance process or user activity.
Traders assessing projects associated with major venture firms should separate the operational status of an individual blockchain network from the reputation and management of any one financial supporter. On-chain measures such as transaction activity, fees, protocol revenue, treasury movements and governance participation can offer clearer evidence of a network’s condition than generalized assumptions about its backers.
A leadership or legal crisis at a venture firm could complicate future fundraising, board participation or follow-on financing for some early-stage portfolio companies. It would not necessarily halt existing networks or change token lockup terms unless a project’s own agreements, governance structure or treasury arrangements create that dependency.
The immediate facts are narrower and more serious: a former venture partner is dead, a highway investigation is ongoing, and a public account alleging severe workplace pressure remains unanswered by the firm named in it. Anyone affected by thoughts of self-harm should contact local emergency services or a crisis support service immediately.
