Fed raises rates as X expands trading features

2026-09-19 01:46

The Federal Reserve’s latest rate increase set the tone for risk markets, pushing the U.S. benchmark rate to a target range of 3.75% to 4.00% and strengthening expectations that borrowing costs could rise again before year-end. The Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously on Sept. 16 to lift rates by 25 basis points, while its updated projections indicated that at least one additional increase remained likely.

Markets reacted quickly to the prospect of tighter financial conditions. U.S. equities and gold declined after the decision, the dollar rose to a one-month high, and the Treasury yield curve moved into a steeper bear flattening, a pattern in which shorter-dated yields rise faster than long-term yields. Market pricing placed the probability of an October increase near 50%, while expectations for a December move also rose.

Higher policy rates do not automatically dictate digital-asset prices, but they reduce the availability of cheap leverage across global markets and raise the return available from cash and government debt. That environment tends to place greater pressure on highly speculative tokens, especially assets supported by borrowed capital or short-term momentum rather than durable liquidity.

X adds trading functions to financial Cashtags

X has moved further into financial-market services with its Cashtag Partner Program, adding a “Trade” tab to supported stock, ETF, and cryptocurrency Cashtags. The feature displays price charts and related posts, then directs users to partner brokerages to place orders.

According to X’s rollout figures, testing generated more than $1 billion in trading volume over four days. Projections connected to the launch put potential activity at more than $25 billion by the end of the year.

The product gives market discussion a more direct route to execution. Cashtags have long been used to organize conversation around public companies and tokens, but the addition of price data and brokerage links could shorten the path between a viral post and a trade. That may increase retail participation during fast-moving market events, while also placing greater value on clear risk warnings from platforms and brokers.

SEC outlines conditions for tokenized stock trading

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has also issued an interim “innovation exemption” framework intended to reduce barriers to on-chain trading of tokenized stocks. The framework establishes four conditions for tokenized stock listings and prohibits synthetic tokenized stocks.

The distinction would place fully backed securities representations in a more favorable position than tokens designed to imitate the price of a share without corresponding ownership or backing. Tokenized stock products have often faced questions over custody, shareholder rights, settlement and whether a token grants a legally enforceable claim on the underlying security.

By excluding synthetic versions, the SEC’s approach would limit the ability of platforms to market stock-linked crypto products that operate more like derivatives than tokenized securities. Firms pursuing the exemption would need to structure their offerings around real underlying assets and meet the agency’s listing conditions.

Satsuma prepares to sell Bitcoin holdings and delist

In the United Kingdom, London-listed Bitcoin treasury company Satsuma has started an orderly wind-down that includes selling its BTC holdings, ending operations and returning most of its capital to shareholders before voluntarily delisting.

The process requires shareholders to pass a special resolution, followed by the establishment of the record date and eligible share count. Satsuma would then sell its Bitcoin, clear remaining balance-sheet items and seek court approval for its capital-return plan under U.K. company law. The delisting and distribution would follow once those steps are completed.

The planned sale adds a company-specific source of Bitcoin supply, though the market impact would depend on the size and method of the disposal. The episode also illustrates the pressure on publicly traded treasury vehicles when their operating model becomes difficult to sustain or their market valuation no longer supports continued listing costs.

Ethereum proposal targets stablecoin-funded transactions

Ethereum developers are discussing EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, a proposal that would let users initiate transfers without holding ETH in their own wallets for gas. Users could pay through USDC balances, while certain applications could sponsor transaction fees directly.

The proposal would preserve Ethereum’s existing fee structure: the accounts ultimately paying the network would continue to pay fees denominated in ETH, and the EIP-1559 fee market would remain in place. The change would shift the user experience rather than replace ETH’s role in blockspace payments.

That arrangement could make wallets and applications easier to use for people who hold stablecoins but do not keep a separate ETH balance. It could also allow payment apps, games and consumer-facing services to hide gas management behind a more familiar dollar-denominated interface.

Hiring tactic raises new security concerns

Security teams have identified a North Korea-linked hiring tactic in which a person is paid roughly $500 to complete a job interview before an in-person substitute begins work under the successful candidate’s identity. The method creates an added challenge for companies relying on remote recruitment, outsourced technical staff and basic identity checks.

The tactic moves beyond conventional fraudulent resumes or fabricated work histories. A successful interview can create a credible record of interaction with a legitimate candidate, while the later substitution complicates verification procedures. Companies handling wallet infrastructure, smart-contract development or sensitive customer data face particular exposure if access controls depend on a single hiring-stage identity review.

DeFi losses and shutdowns add to operational strain

Nostra suffered an oracle attack with estimated losses of about $3.5 million. Oracle attacks typically exploit weaknesses in the data feeds that decentralized applications use to value collateral, calculate borrowing limits or trigger liquidations.

The incident came alongside reports of product shutdowns involving CoinEx and Balancer. Each case has different operational circumstances, but the cluster of disruptions reinforces the practical risk facing users of on-chain financial products: smart-contract exposure extends beyond token prices to oracle design, governance decisions, liquidity conditions and a project’s ability to maintain its services.

Elsewhere, Anthropic and Rum Group reported a $13.7 billion compute agreement, while OpenAI-related reporting said the company would not pursue an initial public offering this year and could delay any listing until at least 2027. South Korea, meanwhile, extended stock-market trading hours to 8 p.m. local time after turnover fell to its lowest level of the year, seeking to make the market more accessible across a longer trading day.
