Fed keeps rates steady as Microsoft rises

2026-10-29 06:39

The Federal Reserve held its benchmark interest rate at 3.75% to 4.00% on Oct. 28, keeping borrowing costs restrictive as inflation remains elevated and shifting market attention quickly toward earnings from the largest technology companies. Microsoft gained more than 3% in after-hours trading after reporting strong Azure growth, while Alphabet fell nearly 10% at one stage as weaker-than-expected search advertising results and negative free cash flow unsettled traders.

The Federal Open Market Committee voted 10-2 to leave the federal funds target range unchanged, according to its policy statement. The two dissenting members preferred a 25-basis-point increase, underscoring that some officials remain concerned that inflation has not cooled sufficiently to justify an easier policy stance.

The Fed also upgraded its view of economic activity, while repeating that inflation remains elevated. That combination gives policymakers little reason to signal imminent rate cuts, even as markets look toward incoming inflation, employment and growth data for clues about the December meeting.

U.S. indexes extend three-day advance

Major U.S. equity indexes finished higher before the Fed decision and the technology earnings reports reshaped sentiment after the close.

The S&P 500 rose 0.28% to end at 7,743.98, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.19% to 52,475.10, while the Nasdaq Composite added about 0.27% to 26,549.85, according to Nasdaq market data. All three benchmarks posted their third consecutive daily advance.

The gains were modest, reflecting a market that had largely expected the Fed to remain on hold. A steady policy rate removes the immediate shock of an unexpected tightening move, but the two dissents prevented the decision from reading as a fully unified endorsement of the current setting.

Short-term Treasury yields tend to move most directly on changes in expectations for Fed policy. Longer-dated yields respond to a broader mix of inflation expectations, economic growth prospects and term premiums, the additional compensation bondholders seek for holding debt over longer periods.

That distinction is particularly relevant for high-growth technology companies. Businesses spending heavily on artificial intelligence infrastructure often expect returns over several years, placing a greater share of their valuation on future cash flows. Higher long-term yields can reduce the present value assigned to those distant earnings, even if the Fed leaves its overnight benchmark unchanged.

Microsoft's cash generation contrasts with Alphabet's result

Microsoft's post-market advance followed quarterly figures that reinforced the financial strength of its cloud operations. In its earnings release for the fiscal quarter ending in September, Microsoft reported that Azure revenue rose 48% from a year earlier and said free cash flow reached about $18.6 billion.

The results gave traders a measure of confidence that Microsoft's large-scale spending on data centers and AI services is being supported by expanding cloud demand and substantial internally generated cash. Free cash flow measures the cash a company has left after operating expenses and capital expenditures, making it closely watched when companies are committing billions of dollars to computing infrastructure.

Alphabet's reaction was sharply different. The company reported free cash flow of roughly negative $9.07 billion for the quarter, according to its earnings release, while its core search advertising performance came in below market expectations.

A negative free-cash-flow quarter does not by itself determine a company's financial health, particularly for a business with Alphabet's scale and balance sheet. In this case, though, it intensified scrutiny of how much cash major technology companies are committing to AI infrastructure and how quickly those expenditures may translate into revenue growth.

The opposing moves in two of the market's largest companies show how earnings can override a broadly supportive index session. Traders are increasingly separating companies that can demonstrate rising revenue and cash generation from those facing questions over spending levels, advertising demand or the timing of returns from AI projects.

Rate policy remains a constraint on risk appetite

The Fed's decision keeps corporate financing costs, household credit rates and valuation assumptions tied to a relatively high policy range. The central bank did not commit to another increase, but the dissenting votes leave open the possibility that stronger inflation data could revive the case for further tightening.

For cryptocurrency markets, the rate decision does not produce a single mechanical outcome. Bitcoin and gold can both react to changes in monetary conditions, but their trading drivers differ. Gold is often assessed partly through real interest rates, the return on cash or government bonds after inflation, because it does not generate income.

Bitcoin can respond to liquidity conditions as well, but flows into and out of funds, derivatives leverage, broader risk appetite and market positioning can produce moves that do not match gold or equities. A stable Fed rate therefore offers limited guidance on its own for digital asset prices.

Higher borrowing costs generally place more pressure on speculative corners of financial markets because cheap leverage becomes harder to obtain and risk-free returns become more competitive. That does not establish an automatic preference for one cryptocurrency over another, and market concentration alone does not provide protection against abrupt price moves.

The next major test will come from economic data that can alter both rate expectations and assumptions built into corporate forecasts. Until then, the Oct. 28 session leaves markets with a clear divide: the Fed remains cautious on inflation, while technology earnings are forcing a closer examination of which AI investments are already producing growth and cash.
