Earnings and Fed decision drive market week

2026-10-26 09:34

U.S. markets face a crowded week of policy, growth and technology-sector tests after major equity indexes split sharply in the run-up to the Federal Reserve’s Oct. 27–28 meeting. The S&P 500 fell 0.47% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.71% in the week through the Oct. 23 close, while the Russell 2000 rose 2.00% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.41%, according to their respective index providers.

That divergence leaves markets particularly sensitive to the Fed’s rate decision, preliminary third-quarter GDP data and earnings from Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon. For crypto markets, the combination places renewed attention on Treasury yields, dollar liquidity and whether large technology companies can justify their rising spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The Federal Open Market Committee is scheduled to publish its policy decision at 2 p.m. Eastern on Oct. 28, followed by a press conference from Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. Markets will assess the decision alongside the committee’s wording on inflation, growth and the likely pace of future policy changes.

Treasury yields and inflation expectations remain elevated

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood near 5.00% at the Oct. 23 close, while WTI crude traded near $103.44 a barrel and Brent crude near $111.66 a barrel. Elevated borrowing costs and energy prices can complicate the Fed’s effort to bring inflation toward its 2% target without weakening economic activity too sharply.

The University of Michigan’s final October consumer sentiment survey put the headline index at 48.0, marginally below September’s 48.1 reading. The survey’s one-year inflation expectation measure rose to 4.7% from 4.6%, showing households remain concerned about near-term price pressures despite the slowdown in sentiment.

Business activity remained in expansion territory. S&P Global’s flash U.S. composite PMI registered 57.6 in October, down from 58.4 in September. A reading above 50 indicates expansion, but the decline points to slower momentum across the private sector.

The coming week will offer several new tests of that picture. The Bureau of Economic Analysis is scheduled to release its initial estimate of third-quarter U.S. gross domestic product at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on Oct. 29. The same release window includes September personal income and spending figures, along with the personal consumption expenditures price index, the Fed’s preferred inflation measure.

A stronger-than-expected GDP print or sticky PCE inflation reading could reinforce the case for keeping monetary policy restrictive. Softer figures could revive expectations that policymakers have more room to lower rates or signal less concern about inflation persistence.

Crypto assets often trade as high-volatility, liquidity-sensitive instruments during such repricing episodes. Rising government-bond yields increase the return available on comparatively lower-risk dollar assets, while higher financing costs can make leveraged positions more fragile. The impact is rarely mechanical: Bitcoin and other major tokens can also react to currency moves, equity-market positioning and shifts in demand for derivatives.

Mega-cap technology spending moves to center stage

Microsoft and Alphabet are scheduled to report quarterly results after the U.S. market closes on Oct. 28. Amazon is due to follow after the close on Oct. 29. Their reports will be examined closely for cloud-computing revenue, operating margins and the cost of expanding AI data-center capacity.

Those questions have become more prominent after Meta Platforms reported 26% year-over-year revenue growth for the third quarter. Meta reported operating cash flow of $32.79 billion and free cash flow of negative $2.12 billion for the period, according to the company’s results. It also raised the lower end of its full-year capital-expenditure forecast by $5 billion, setting a new range of $135 billion to $145 billion.

The revised spending forecast shows how rapidly AI infrastructure is consuming capital, even at companies with large advertising and cloud-related revenue streams. Capital expenditure covers long-lived investments such as data centers, servers, networking equipment and energy infrastructure. Companies may spend heavily before the associated revenue reaches scale, which can widen the gap between operating cash generation and free cash flow.

Tesla moved in the other direction, cutting its 2026 capital-spending expectation to more than $20 billion from more than $25 billion. The change shifts attention toward whether the company expects to fund future growth with a more restrained investment program, improved operating performance, or both.

The contrast between Meta’s higher outlay and Tesla’s lower projection does not establish a single direction for the technology economy. Their businesses require different assets and face different competitive pressures. Yet the diverging plans give markets a more concrete way to judge whether aggressive infrastructure budgets are translating into revenue and cash generation.

For companies such as Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon, the next reports could clarify whether cloud customers are increasing AI-related workloads fast enough to support the industry’s investment cycle. Cloud growth and margin performance will carry particular weight because the biggest firms are committing substantial resources to computing capacity before the commercial returns are fully visible.

Hong Kong stocks add another risk signal

Hong Kong equities also weakened over the week. The Hang Seng Index ended Oct. 23 at 23,093.37, gaining 0.69% on the day but declining about 4.52% for the week. The Hang Seng Tech Index closed at 3,871.66, up 2.05% for the session and down about 5.76% across the week.

The moves underline how quickly risk appetite can shift across regions when rates, growth expectations and technology valuations are all being reassessed. Asian technology shares have their own regional drivers, including China-related growth expectations, but their pullback also coincided with a global focus on high-duration assets—companies and sectors whose valuations depend heavily on future earnings.

Crypto traders will be watching the Fed statement and Powell’s press conference for any indication that officials see inflation risks as contained, worsening or broadly unchanged. The immediate reaction may depend less on the rate decision than on the language used to describe future policy, especially with GDP, PCE inflation and major technology earnings arriving within roughly 48 hours.

The week’s schedule compresses several forces that can affect digital-asset trading conditions: the cost of dollar funding, the outlook for economic growth, AI-driven equity valuations and the appetite for leveraged risk. That combination could produce sharper short-term moves than any individual headline alone.
