Crypto prices fall as Bitcoin and Ethereum drop

Andreessen Horowitz’s dedicated crypto investment arm has rebranded as a16z Frontier, extending its mandate beyond blockchain startups to artificial intelligence, autonomous machines, software-hardware companies and networks linking people with AI agents. The change keeps crypto within the firm’s investment scope but places it alongside technologies that could increasingly share the same infrastructure, capital and product markets.

Chris Dixon, who leads the unit, said the renamed organization will continue investing in crypto and related projects while backing a wider set of “frontier” technologies. The move reflects how venture firms are treating blockchains less as an isolated category and more as part of a stack that includes AI systems, robotics, digital identity, payments and machine-to-machine commerce.

Crypto remains within a broader technology mandate

The a16z Crypto name had become closely associated with major investments in blockchain infrastructure, decentralized finance, consumer applications and Web3 developer tools. Its replacement with a16z Frontier does not signal an exit from the sector. Instead, it gives the firm a structure for pursuing projects whose business models may span several emerging technology fields.

That overlap is becoming easier to see in practice. AI agents need ways to identify themselves, hold assets, make payments and interact with other systems. Blockchain networks can provide programmable settlement, transparent records and digital ownership tools, although adoption remains uneven and technical standards are still developing.

The expanded focus also covers autonomous machines and companies combining software with physical hardware. Those areas tend to require patient capital, specialist engineering and longer development cycles than many consumer crypto applications. Folding them into a single investment platform could allow a16z Frontier to pursue infrastructure companies whose products serve both decentralized networks and AI-driven services.

The announcement arrives as crypto venture financing faces a more selective market than during the industry’s previous cycle. Firms are increasingly looking for businesses with identifiable customers, recurring revenue or technology that can operate beyond a single token ecosystem. A broader mandate gives a16z Frontier more flexibility to follow those criteria without abandoning crypto-native projects.

Institutional infrastructure remains a contested market

Digital-asset custody has also remained a target for large financial and payments companies. A report said Visa is in talks to acquire custody infrastructure provider Fireblocks at a valuation of about $2.5 billion, though the supplied information did not say that a definitive agreement had been reached.

Fireblocks provides tools used by institutions to store, transfer and manage digital assets through systems designed to reduce the risks associated with private-key handling. A deal involving Visa would place a global payments company deeper into the operational plumbing of the digital-asset market rather than simply offering card-linked crypto products.

The reported valuation is far below Fireblocks’ previously reported $8 billion private-market valuation, illustrating the pressure on late-stage technology companies after the valuation surge of recent years. It would also show that established financial firms may see value in buying infrastructure during a period when private-market prices have reset.

OpenAI’s reported plan to raise as much as $30 billion at a pre-money valuation of roughly $1.25 trillion offers a sharp contrast. The proposed round, led by an Abu Dhabi-based backer according to the supplied report, would underline the premium being placed on companies seen as central to the AI buildout. No closing date or financing terms were included.

For crypto companies, the comparison is consequential. Capital that once flowed toward token projects is now competing with AI infrastructure, data centers, robotics and enterprise software for attention. The a16z Frontier rebrand acknowledges that competition while positioning crypto as one component of an interconnected technology market.

Protocols pursue tokenholder-focused changes

Several crypto projects are also advancing plans intended to connect their tokens more directly to protocol economics. Stani Kulechov said Aavenomics 3.0 would include AAVE buybacks, staking and burn mechanisms. No timetable or program sizes were provided.

Buybacks involve purchasing tokens from the market, while burns permanently remove tokens from supply. Staking typically requires tokenholders to lock assets in a protocol in exchange for rewards or security-related responsibilities. Each mechanism can affect token supply and distribution, but the eventual impact depends on implementation, governance approval and the source of funds used for purchases or rewards.

GMGN is testing a self-developed cross-chain bridge that would allow users to buy tokens on multiple networks with USDC inside its application, according to Haze. The bridge is in a limited rollout, and the company did not provide a launch date or transaction limits.

Cross-chain tools can reduce the number of separate transactions required to move between networks, but bridges have historically been a major security target. Their usefulness depends heavily on how assets are secured, how transactions are validated and whether the bridge can maintain reliable liquidity across the chains it supports.

Security and regulation remain practical constraints

New York’s Department of Financial Services has warned regulated entities to identify and patch two critical PHP vulnerabilities known to be actively exploited. The alert places attention on a basic but persistent risk for crypto businesses: security failures often begin in widely used web software rather than in a blockchain protocol itself.

The warning follows Zipcoin’s decision to shut down after an Oct. 15 incident that it linked to a UNCX event. Zipcoin said a hacker removed 1.1% of the total supply across six Ethereum-based tokens — PEPECOIN, EDGEN, ZC, X, LO0P and PAAL — and sold the assets on the open market. The team said it initially repurchased tokens to address a shortfall connected to planned allocations rather than publicly disclosing the incident.

Regulatory conditions also remain unsettled. Panigirtzoglou said actions by U.S. agencies including the Securities and Exchange Commission, Commodity Futures Trading Commission and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency had partly softened the effect of the Senate’s failure to advance the Clarity Act. The note added that political and legal risks could keep risk premia elevated until Congress passes a comprehensive market-structure law.

In the United Kingdom, proposed Financial Conduct Authority rules could require regulated platforms to execute customer orders only through FCA-authorized venues from Oct. 25, 2027. Harries said the approach could restrict how compliant intermediaries provide access to decentralized finance, potentially pushing platforms to reconsider which services they can offer UK customers.

Taken together, the a16z Frontier shift places crypto in a more competitive technology landscape: one where AI is attracting unprecedented capital, financial institutions are considering acquisitions of custody providers, and product builders must navigate stricter rules and persistent security threats alongside technical innovation.
