Coinbase returns to profit on investment gains

2026-10-30 02:25

Coinbase returned to GAAP profitability in the third quarter of 2026, reporting net income of $719 million after three consecutive quarterly losses, but nearly all of that result came from a $715 million gain on crypto-asset investments rather than a recovery in its core trading business.

The company's adjusted net income, which removes investment gains and related taxes, was $77.7 million, down 82% from a year earlier, according to Coinbase's third-quarter shareholder letter and financial statements. Total revenue reached $1.216 billion, down 35% year over year and roughly unchanged from the second quarter.

The results show a business preserving profitability through lower costs, stablecoin income and newer products while transaction revenue remains under pressure. Coinbase's core transaction revenue was $590 million, down 44% from the same period in 2025 and 1% from the prior quarter.

Investment gains lift GAAP earnings

The $715 million gain on crypto-asset investments was the decisive factor behind Coinbase's headline profit. The company also recorded roughly $39.2 million in other investment income during the quarter.

Without those gains, Coinbase remained profitable on an adjusted basis, though at a far smaller scale. Adjusted EBITDA, a measure of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, was $333 million. That marked a 60% increase from the second quarter and extended the company's streak of positive adjusted EBITDA to 15 quarters, but it was also down 58% from a year earlier.

Coinbase posted an adjusted net loss of $105 million in the second quarter. The move to a $77.7 million adjusted profit in the third quarter came as expenses fell faster than revenue improved. Revenue was almost flat sequentially, leaving cost reductions as the main driver of the operating turnaround.

Total operating expenses fell to $1.154 billion, down 17% from a year earlier and 13% from the second quarter. Adjusted expenses were $975 million, below Coinbase's prior guidance range of $980 million to $1.08 billion and 6% lower than the previous quarter.

Coinbase lowered its full-year adjusted expense outlook to between $4.15 billion and $4.3 billion. Its fourth-quarter adjusted expense forecast is higher, at $1.007 billion to $1.157 billion, suggesting that the third-quarter restraint will not translate into a straight-line decline in spending.

Trading activity remains muted

Transaction revenue continued to reflect a softer trading environment. Coinbase reported $134.5 billion in crypto spot trading volume during the quarter, down from $146.4 billion in the second quarter. Consumer spot volume fell about 9% quarter over quarter, while crypto derivatives volume declined about 6%.

Consumer transaction revenue was approximately $450 million, broadly unchanged from the second quarter. Institutional transaction revenue fell 8% sequentially to roughly $92 million.

The volume decline occurred even as Coinbase gained market share. Its trading-volume market share across spot, crypto derivatives and stablecoin-related activity rose to 10.7%, from 10.3% in the second quarter and 5.6% a year earlier. It was the fourth consecutive quarterly increase.

That improvement gives Coinbase a larger position in the trading market, but it has not yet translated into a comparable revenue rebound. Transaction revenue depends on the products being traded, customer mix and fee rates, rather than volume share alone. Lower-margin institutional activity and derivatives trading can produce a different revenue outcome than retail spot trading.

Platform assets rose sharply to $377 billion at the end of the quarter, from $246 billion three months earlier. Coinbase said those assets represented 12.5% of total cryptocurrency market capitalization. Higher assets held on the platform can support custody, staking and lending revenue, though they do not automatically generate transaction fees unless users trade more frequently.

Stablecoin revenue carries subscription business

Subscription and services revenue reached $570 million, up 3% from the second quarter and accounting for 49% of Coinbase's net revenue. The segment was nevertheless down 20% year over year.

Stablecoin revenue was the largest contributor, rising 5% sequentially to $307 million. That means USDC-related income represented more than half of Coinbase's subscription and services revenue for the period.

Average USDC balances held on Coinbase climbed to a record $22 billion, up 49% from a year earlier and marking the 14th consecutive quarterly record. The increase came even as average total USDC market capitalization declined to $73 billion from $77 billion in the second quarter.

The figures point to a growing concentration of USDC within Coinbase's own platform. That provides the company with a recurring revenue source tied to stablecoin balances and interest-rate conditions, reducing its dependence on transaction fees. Coinbase expects USDC rewards and marketing expenses to rise in the fourth quarter, which could limit the immediate earnings benefit from higher balances.

Coinbase also cited competition with Circle in stablecoin payments infrastructure, even as both companies benefit from USDC's expanding usage. Circle issues USDC, while Coinbase earns revenue through its commercial relationship with the issuer and through USDC activity on its platform.

Prediction markets add a new revenue stream

The company's prediction-markets business produced revenue at an annualized run rate above $200 million in the third quarter, implying more than $50 million in quarterly revenue. Average daily trading users in the product rose by more than 60% from the second quarter.

That expansion gives Coinbase a potentially meaningful non-spot trading product as conventional crypto volume remains subdued. The reported run rate is substantial relative to the company's quarterly transaction revenue, though Coinbase did not provide a separate reported revenue line for prediction markets in its financial statements.

For the fourth quarter, Coinbase projected subscription and services revenue of $550 million to $630 million. The midpoint of $590 million would represent roughly 3.5% growth from the third quarter.

As of Oct. 25, Coinbase had generated approximately $165 million in fourth-quarter transaction revenue. The company did not provide full-quarter transaction revenue guidance, leaving the eventual result dependent on market activity through the remainder of the period.

Coinbase ended the quarter with $8.604 billion in cash and cash equivalents and about $2 billion remaining under its share-repurchase authorization. Operating cash flow for the first nine months of 2026 was $786 million, down from $1.803 billion in the comparable period a year earlier. Stock-based compensation totaled $719 million over the same nine-month period.

The third-quarter profit restores a positive GAAP result, but Coinbase's underlying earnings remain tied to disciplined spending and recurring balance-based revenue while its largest historical revenue engine, transaction fees, has yet to show a sustained recovery.
