Coinbase reported third-quarter net income of $719 million, a 66% increase from $433 million a year earlier, but the result was largely driven by a $715 million gain on crypto assets held for investment rather than an acceleration in its core trading business.
Total revenue reached $1.22 billion, unchanged from the previous quarter and 35% lower than a year earlier, according to Coinbase's earnings filing released Thursday. The figures point to a company relying more heavily on stablecoins, derivatives and prediction markets to cushion the impact of weaker spot-market activity.
The contrast between reported earnings and operating conditions is sharp. Coinbase's investment-asset gain accounted for nearly all of the quarter's stated net income, while trading volumes declined across both its spot and derivatives businesses. That leaves the company's recurring services increasingly central to its ability to generate revenue during quieter cryptocurrency markets.
Trading activity softened, but Coinbase says share increased
Spot trading volume fell 8% from the prior quarter to $135 billion, Coinbase said. The company also said it continued to gain market share, suggesting its volume declined less sharply than activity across the venues it tracks.
Derivatives volume on the platform dropped 7% quarter on quarter to about $986 billion, according to a Friday note from Bernstein. The research firm estimated that total industry derivatives volume fell 11% in the same period, placing Coinbase's decline below the broader market's contraction.
That relative performance matters for a platform whose trading revenue remains linked to market participation. Holding or expanding market share during a lower-volume quarter can strengthen Coinbase's position when activity returns, though it does not remove the near-term pressure caused by reduced customer trading.
Bernstein estimated that prediction markets and derivatives generated about 25% of Coinbase's transaction revenue during the quarter. On the firm's calculation, those businesses represented roughly 12% of total revenue, helping offset weaker demand for conventional crypto spot trading.
Prediction markets doubled their annualized revenue
Coinbase's prediction-markets unit exceeded $200 million in annualized revenue, up from roughly $100 million in the previous quarter, chief executive officer Brian Armstrong said in a Thursday statement.
Annualized revenue is a run-rate measure that projects recent revenue over a full year; it does not necessarily represent revenue already booked during the current year. Even so, the increase indicates that prediction contracts have become a more meaningful part of the company's transaction business.
Prediction markets allow users to trade contracts tied to the outcome of future events, such as elections, economic releases or sports results. Their appeal to platforms is that activity can continue even when cryptocurrency prices are moving sideways, because demand is linked to scheduled events and public forecasts rather than solely to token volatility.
The business also gives Coinbase an additional route into derivatives-style trading. The company's conventional derivatives operation is already far larger by volume than its spot business, and Bernstein's estimates suggest that products outside basic crypto purchases and sales are taking a growing share of transaction revenue.
Stablecoin revenue provided a steadier contribution
Stablecoin-related revenue totaled $328 million in the third quarter, up 3% from the prior quarter, Coinbase reported. That figure included $21 million associated with USDC held on the company's corporate balance sheet.
William Blair highlighted stablecoins and USDC as a source of support in its Thursday commentary. Stablecoin revenue can be less dependent on daily trading turnover than transaction fees because it is tied to balances, payment usage and interest income linked to reserve assets, depending on the arrangement.
The quarter's numbers show why Coinbase has placed greater emphasis on services beyond spot execution. Revenue from stablecoins can hold up when customers trade less frequently, while derivatives and prediction markets can provide activity tied to leverage, hedging and event-based contracts.
Those revenue lines do not fully eliminate market sensitivity. Stablecoin balances, derivatives demand and prediction-market participation can all fluctuate with risk appetite and macroeconomic conditions. Yet their growth reduces Coinbase's exposure to the sharp swings that have historically characterized retail spot trading.
Share price fell after results
Coinbase shares closed down 1.07% at $160.59 on Thursday, despite the large increase in net income. The market reaction reflected the distinction between the reported profit figure and the slower underlying revenue and volume trends.
Bernstein maintained its Outperform rating and $250 price target after the release. William Blair's valuation analysis indicated a value of about $240, according to its Thursday commentary. Those targets represent analysts' assessments rather than guarantees of future market prices.
Coinbase's third-quarter results place the company in a transition phase: crypto asset appreciation delivered the headline profit, while stablecoins, derivatives and prediction markets supplied evidence of a more diversified revenue base. The next earnings reports will show whether those newer and service-led businesses can keep expanding if spot-market volumes remain subdued and gains on company-held crypto assets do not recur.
