Coinbase and Moov add stablecoin payments to banks

2026-09-10 15:26

Coinbase and payments infrastructure provider Moov plan to bring stablecoin payment acceptance, settlement and real-time account funding tools to more than 1,000 community banks and credit unions, extending crypto-based payment rails into institutions that serve local consumers and small businesses.

The companies said the integration will combine Coinbase’s payments API and custodial wallet services with Moov’s existing payment platform. Community lenders using Moov would be able to offer stablecoin-based consumer payments, merchant acceptance, payouts and settlement through systems connected to their current banking operations, rather than developing separate crypto products in-house.

The arrangement targets a practical obstacle for smaller banks: adding new payment capabilities often requires major technology work, specialist compliance teams and direct relationships with multiple service providers. By placing Coinbase’s custody and payment components behind Moov’s platform, the partners aim to package those functions into an existing bank-facing product.

The rollout reflects Coinbase’s growing effort to sell infrastructure to established financial firms, rather than operating solely as a trading venue and digital-asset custodian. It also puts stablecoins closer to the software used by local lenders, where payment speed and card-processing costs can carry more immediate weight than cryptocurrency trading features.

Stablecoin tools inside existing payment systems

Moov provides payment infrastructure used by financial institutions and software platforms, including account-to-account transfers, card payments and money movement tools. Under the partnership, it would add Coinbase’s stablecoin capabilities to that infrastructure.

Stablecoins are digital tokens designed to maintain a fixed value, usually by tracking the U.S. dollar. Their appeal in payments rests on the ability to move value on blockchain networks at any time, with transactions capable of settling more quickly than some traditional bank-transfer processes.

For a community lender, the proposed system could support a merchant accepting a stablecoin payment, receiving a payout or funding an account without needing to interact directly with blockchain wallets or build its own custody operation. Coinbase would supply the payment API and custodial wallet layer, while Moov would connect the services with the institution’s payment environment.

That division of labor is central to the partnership. Custody remains one of the most sensitive areas of digital-asset services because it involves safeguarding customer funds and managing access to wallets. Payment acceptance also brings operational requirements around transaction monitoring, customer support, conversion workflows and reconciliation with bank records.

Embedding these functions through a technology provider gives community institutions a route into stablecoin payments without presenting themselves as cryptocurrency exchanges or requiring customers to manage their own wallets.

Small-business costs are a central use case

Jill Castilla, chief executive of Citizens Bank of Edmond, said in Coinbase’s release that the 125-year-old bank has heard demand from small-business customers for lower interchange costs and faster payment timelines.

Interchange is the fee structure associated with card payments, where merchants commonly pay processing costs to accept debit or credit cards. Stablecoin settlement could offer an alternative rail for certain payments, though the financial benefit would depend on network fees, conversion costs, merchant integration and whether customers choose to use the option.

Faster settlement could prove more relevant for businesses managing tight cash flows. Card payments may be authorized immediately but can take longer to settle through the banking system, while certain blockchain-based transfers can be completed around the clock. The partnership is designed to make that capability available through a local bank relationship rather than requiring a business to establish a separate account with a crypto-focused provider.

Coinbase corporate affairs executive VanGrack described the initiative in the company release as an effort to connect modern payment infrastructure with local financial institutions. The framing suggests Coinbase sees community banks and credit unions as distribution partners for payment products, with the institutions retaining their role as the customer-facing financial provider.

Coinbase expands its banking infrastructure strategy

The Moov agreement follows a series of partnerships that have moved Coinbase deeper into the banking sector. In July 2025, PNC announced a relationship with Coinbase aimed at providing crypto services to PNC clients and banking services to Coinbase. Coinbase later disclosed separate arrangements involving Citi and JPMorgan.

Those deals differ in scope, but together they show banks seeking selective access to crypto-related services while maintaining control over their own customer relationships and compliance frameworks. For Coinbase, the strategy creates revenue opportunities beyond trading volumes, which can fluctuate sharply with digital-asset markets.

Wade Arnold, Moov’s chief executive, said corporate clients have often wanted to accept stablecoins but have had to use providers outside their primary bank to do so. The Coinbase-Moov integration is intended to close that gap by making stablecoin services available through institutions already handling a client’s core banking needs.

The practical test will be whether the participating banks can turn an infrastructure announcement into products that merchants and consumers find useful. Stablecoin payment systems must compete with cards, automated clearing house transfers and instant-payment services that are already familiar to businesses and often integrated into accounting workflows.

Community banks may be particularly selective about how they deploy the service. Merchant payments, cross-border payouts and treasury transfers each have different compliance, operational and customer-experience demands. A bank may choose to enable stablecoin settlement for business customers before offering consumer-facing features, or limit the service to specific transaction types.

The partnership places Coinbase and Moov in a position to offer a ready-made route for that experimentation. Rather than asking each local institution to become a crypto specialist, the model would allow banks and credit unions to decide whether stablecoin payments fit their customers while relying on outside providers for core technical infrastructure.
