Circle schedules Arc public mainnet for 2026

2026-09-09 06:42

USDCETH

Circle plans to open the public mainnet of its EVM-compatible layer 1, Arc, on Sept. 16, 2026, with a design centered on using USDC for transaction fees and stablecoin settlement rather than relying on a separate gas token. Early trading activity has already emerged around meme coins and launchpad tokens in the network’s pre-launch environment, though liquidity remains thin and access to Arc-based USDC has carried a substantial premium.

Arc would quote transaction costs in U.S. dollars and collect gas fees in USDC, giving applications and users a more predictable fee unit than chains whose costs fluctuate with a native cryptocurrency. Circle says the network is targeting roughly one-second finality through Malachite, a consensus engine, while retaining compatibility with Solidity smart contracts and widely used Ethereum Virtual Machine development tools.

The chain’s validator structure differs from the open validator participation used by networks such as Ethereum. Arc is designed around permissioned block producers, a model that could appeal to regulated financial institutions seeking greater control over the parties responsible for validating transactions. It also places Circle’s stablecoin settlement infrastructure directly on a network designed around USDC, rather than leaving activity distributed solely across external blockchains.

Early access to Arc USDC has become expensive

Demand for early access has created a fragmented market for “Arc USDC,” the version of USDC usable on the network’s current environment. Users cannot simply spend USDC held on Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum, or other supported networks without moving it into Arc-compatible form.

An over-the-counter marketplace called Unstable has been cited as one route for obtaining Arc USDC. Offers on the venue have priced Arc USDC at roughly 1.8 USDC on Ethereum for each 1 Arc USDC, according to the project materials, alongside a 3% marketplace fee. Such a premium reflects scarce bridge access and a limited supply of usable capital on the chain, rather than a change in the intended dollar value of USDC itself.

The gap could narrow sharply when broader official access becomes available. Until then, it creates a high effective cost for users seeking to trade small, speculative tokens before public mainnet access. It also means token prices expressed in Arc USDC may not be directly comparable with prices on networks where USDC can move more freely.

Users whose wallets do not automatically recognize the network have circulated settings identifying the chain as “ARC Mainnet,” with chain ID 5042 and USDC as the gas token. Community-operated infrastructure has reportedly experienced congestion and failed transactions, a meaningful operational risk for traders attempting to move funds during volatile periods.

Launchpad tokens lead early speculative activity

The most visible activity in Arc’s current market has centered on launchpad-linked assets and meme tokens, rather than the institutional settlement products that Circle has presented as the network’s longer-term focus.

TOLLY, a token linked to a launchpad and decentralized exchange model, was listed at roughly $2.47 million in market value in the supplied market data. Its structure places the token supply into a permanently locked USDC liquidity pool. The project describes a 1% trading fee, with 64% of buy-side USDC fees directed to creators, 12% to holder rewards, 10% to the protocol, and the remaining share earmarked for buybacks and burns. Fees collected in the project token on sell orders are described as fully burned.

WARP, another early token, was listed at approximately $870,000 in market value. It is associated with a launchpad and trading-terminal model using a bonding curve, which adjusts token prices as purchases and sales change the available supply. The project says liquidity would migrate to WarpDex once WARP reaches a market value of about $69,000, after which liquidity-provider tokens would be burned.

WARP’s proposed cross-chain mechanism relies on Circle’s Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol, or CCTP. The plan describes burning USDC on Ethereum, Base, and Arbitrum, minting an equivalent amount on Arc, and using those funds for automated purchases. Whether such systems can operate smoothly at scale will depend on bridge availability, liquidity and execution during periods of heavy demand.

Meme tokens trade in shallow pools

Several community-themed tokens have also appeared in early Arc markets. COOL was cited at about $2.94 million in market value, followed by Architects at roughly $820,000, ARCAT at $710,000 and BEANCAT at $275,000. Their branding draws on Circle- and Arc-related imagery, including the “Architects” phrase associated in the supplied material with Circle chief executive Jeremy Allaire.

These valuations sit against relatively small liquidity pools. Available liquidity in some early markets ranges from tens of thousands of dollars to around $100,000, according to the supplied information. A token can therefore show a headline market capitalization far larger than the capital that can realistically enter or leave the pool without moving its price.

That structure makes price discovery especially unreliable ahead of mainnet. A relatively modest purchase can lift a token’s quoted valuation, while a large sale may face severe slippage — the difference between an expected trade price and the actual execution price. Failed transactions, limited routing options and high Arc USDC acquisition costs add further friction.

Circle’s funding and institutional roadmap

Circle’s disclosed Arc financing includes a $222 million presale completed in May 2026 at an estimated fully diluted valuation of about $3 billion. The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz, commonly known as a16z, with BlackRock, Apollo and Intercontinental Exchange, or ICE, also participating, according to the project’s funding disclosure.

The institutional pitch extends beyond stablecoin transfers. Project timelines point to a 2027 rollout for tokenized products including BUIDL and DTC, while availability of an ARC token is described as subject to a lock-up period. The sequencing leaves early market participants trading community assets well before the chain’s proposed tokenized-fund products are expected to arrive.

Circle’s USDC supply has also continued to expand. The supplied figures say USDC added $584 million in market value over one week, bringing total supply above $74.4 billion. That scale helps explain why Circle is building a dedicated settlement layer, but it does not guarantee liquidity or adoption for tokens launched around Arc’s opening.

The Sept. 16 launch will test whether Arc can shift from a scarce-access trading venue into a usable settlement network. Official connectivity, reliable nodes and deeper USDC liquidity would likely have a more immediate effect on the network’s early markets than meme-token valuations established in pools that remain small by on-chain trading standards.
