Blockchain.com has introduced short-dated cryptocurrency options for eligible users, allowing traders to take a view on the price direction of seven digital assets while limiting the maximum loss to the premium paid upfront.
The new product offers call and put contracts on Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana’s SOL, Hyperliquid’s HYPE, Avalanche’s AVAX, XRP and TRON’s TRX. Contracts can expire in as little as a week, placing the service in the fast-moving end of the derivatives market, where users typically trade around near-term price moves rather than longer-term portfolio positioning.
Trades are funded in USDC through Blockchain.com’s trading account. The company says the option premium—the amount paid to open a position—represents the user’s maximum possible loss, excluding any applicable fees. The minimum premium is $5.
Contracts cannot be exited before expiry
Blockchain.com’s support documentation sets an important limitation on the product: options cannot be sold, closed early or otherwise exited before their expiry date. Once a trader opens a position, the contract must be held until settlement.
That structure differs from options markets where contracts can be resold before expiry, allowing traders to take profit, reduce losses or adjust exposure as market conditions change. On Blockchain.com’s product, the upfront premium caps the downside, but it also locks the trader into the original position for the duration of the contract.
The trade-off could appeal to users seeking a simple, predefined-risk position. It also requires users to be more selective about expiry dates and price targets, since a sudden market move before expiry cannot be actively managed by closing the contract.
A call option generally reflects a view that an asset’s price will finish above a selected level at expiry, while a put option reflects a view that it will finish below that level. Blockchain.com’s product flow asks users to choose an asset, select an expiry date and target price, enter an amount and review the order before confirming it. The platform then creates the corresponding call or put contract.
The company’s product release does not describe the service as a venue for continuously traded options positions. Instead, its design resembles a short-term directional tool with known upfront cost and a fixed holding period.
Seven assets bring major tokens and newer markets together
Bitcoin and ether are established underlyings for cryptocurrency derivatives, but the inclusion of SOL, HYPE, AVAX, XRP and TRX gives the product exposure to tokens with distinct market structures and volatility profiles.
SOL and AVAX are associated with major smart-contract networks, while XRP and TRX remain widely traded tokens with long-running global user bases. HYPE is the native token of Hyperliquid, the decentralized derivatives platform that has become a notable venue for onchain perpetual futures activity.
Offering options on this group gives Blockchain.com a way to package near-term price views across several of the most actively discussed corners of the crypto market. The one-week maximum expiry means the contracts are geared toward immediate catalysts such as token unlocks, protocol announcements, macroeconomic releases or sharp weekend trading moves.
Short expiries can also make target-price selection especially consequential. A contract may require not only a correct directional view but also a sufficiently large move before the deadline. Traders who expect an asset to rise modestly, for example, could still see a call expire without value if the selected target price is not reached under the product’s terms.
Derivatives push follows u.s. licensing applications
The options release follows Blockchain.com’s move earlier this month to seek U.S. regulatory licenses for prediction markets and crypto derivatives. The applications indicate that the company is exploring a more formal route into regulated derivatives offerings in the United States, though the newly launched options service remains restricted to supported jurisdictions.
Blockchain.com already provides access to prediction markets through Polymarket and offers perpetual futures through Hyperliquid to certain international users. Perpetual futures, unlike these options contracts, generally allow positions to remain open without a fixed expiry date and can involve liquidation risk when traders use leverage.
The new options product adds another trading format to that lineup. It gives users a defined-loss alternative to leveraged perpetual contracts, while retaining exposure to short-term market direction. The absence of early exits means it does not function as a direct substitute for perpetual futures or conventional exchange-traded options.
Regulatory availability will likely determine how widely the service can be used. Crypto derivatives products face varying rules across jurisdictions, particularly where regulators classify contracts as securities, commodities derivatives, gambling products or a combination of those categories.
A simpler product with meaningful constraints
Blockchain.com’s launch reflects demand for retail-facing derivatives interfaces that reduce the complexity of margin, liquidations and position management. Paying the full premium at the start makes the cost visible before the trade is placed, rather than leaving users exposed to margin calls or forced closures associated with leveraged products.
That simplicity should not obscure the risks created by short expiries. Digital-asset prices can move sharply within hours, and contracts that cannot be closed early leave no room to react if a trade initially moves in the right direction and then reverses before settlement.
The product therefore places greater weight on position sizing and premium limits than on active trading tactics. A user can lose no more than the premium paid, but repeated small premiums and fees can accumulate quickly when traders repeatedly attempt to capture brief market swings.
By combining capped-loss contracts with a one-week maximum expiry and no secondary exit, Blockchain.com is offering a tightly defined form of crypto speculation: a limited-cost wager on where selected tokens will stand at a particular time.
