Bitcoin trades below $82000 as US stocks fall

2026-10-22 16:33

Bitcoin fell below $82,000 during Thursday’s US trading session as escalating rhetoric between Washington and Tehran added to pressure across risk assets. BTC dropped as low as $81,256, down 2.9% on the day after approaching $85,000 in the previous session, while US stocks opened sharply lower and Treasury bonds attracted defensive demand.

The move placed bitcoin back near a price level closely watched by traders after weeks of unstable trading. The asset had struggled to build momentum above the mid-$80,000 range, and Thursday’s decline brought the market close to the $81,300 area that had served as a recent support zone.

US president Donald Trump contributed to the risk-off mood by telling reporters that the United States was “not negotiating” with Iran. “We are going to have something one way or the other that will happen fairly soon,” Trump said, adding that “most people seem to think it’s after the election,” referring to the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

The comments arrived as markets were already reacting to renewed concerns over Middle East tensions, energy prices and the potential economic effects of a further escalation. Bitcoin moved in the same direction as equity markets rather than acting as a shelter from geopolitical uncertainty.

Stocks and bitcoin decline together

The S&P 500 was down 1.3% shortly after Wall Street opened, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.3%. The larger Nasdaq decline pointed to particularly heavy selling in technology shares, which have faced renewed scrutiny over high valuations connected to artificial intelligence spending.

Bitcoin’s slide alongside the Nasdaq reinforced its recent sensitivity to broader appetite for risk. Large portfolio managers increasingly trade bitcoin through regulated funds and derivatives alongside equities, bonds and commodities. That structure can make the cryptocurrency more responsive to the same forces affecting technology stocks: interest-rate expectations, liquidity conditions, geopolitical shocks and sharp changes in market volatility.

Thursday’s trading offered little sign that bitcoin was separating from that pattern. A fall in equities, combined with uncertainty over a possible US-Iran confrontation, encouraged a defensive market posture. In such conditions, traders often reduce exposure to assets with larger daily price swings, including cryptocurrencies and high-growth stocks.

The contrast with traditional havens was visible in the Treasury market. The yield on the benchmark US 10-year Treasury note approached 5% before retreating during the session as bond prices rose. Treasury yields move inversely to prices, meaning increased buying of government debt pushed yields lower.

Ian Lyngen, head of US rates strategy at BMO Capital Markets, said Treasuries had become a primary beneficiary of weaker global risk sentiment. He also pointed to pressure on technology shares tied to AI valuation concerns and to renewed gains in energy prices.

$81,300 becomes the immediate technical line

Bitcoin’s decline brought attention back to the narrow trading range that had contained price action in recent sessions. The $81,300 area has emerged as a near-term floor, while $84,400 has acted as resistance. A sustained move between those levels would suggest that traders remain reluctant to make large directional bets before the next Federal Reserve policy decision on Oct. 28.

A close below $81,300 would increase the chance of a retest of bitcoin’s Oct. 15 low of $79,821. That level sits just below the round-number $80,000 mark, which could become a psychological focal point if selling broadens.

On the upside, bitcoin would need to recover and hold above $84,400 to reverse Thursday’s immediate weakness. Its failure to maintain the previous session’s push toward $85,000 shows that sellers remain active at higher prices, particularly when stock-market sentiment deteriorates.

Bitcoin also traded close to the estimated average cost basis for US spot bitcoin ETF buyers, around $81,500. Cost basis is the approximate average price at which holders acquired an asset. When the market trades near that level, ETF holders may become more sensitive to further declines because many positions are close to moving into losses.

That does not automatically create selling pressure. Long-term fund holders can remain in place through volatile periods, and ETF ownership is spread across different types of market participants. Yet the area could draw additional attention if bitcoin remains below it for several sessions.

Fed decision and election calendar add pressure

The Federal Reserve’s Oct. 28 meeting is the next scheduled event likely to shape the interest-rate outlook. Bitcoin and other risk assets have remained highly responsive to changes in expectations for borrowing costs because higher yields can reduce the appeal of assets that do not generate income.

Markets will focus on the Fed’s policy decision, its economic assessment and any guidance on the path of rates into the final months of the year. The central bank’s message will arrive less than a week before the US midterm election, leaving traders to assess monetary policy and geopolitical risk in an already tense political environment.

Thursday’s move did not establish a new long-term direction for bitcoin, but it showed how quickly geopolitical headlines can disrupt a market already waiting for a major policy decision. For now, the cryptocurrency’s near-term path appears closely tied to whether US equities stabilize, Treasury demand persists and bitcoin can defend the low-$81,000 range.
