Bitcoin price tests 50 day SMA support

2026-10-23 16:04

Bitcoin recovered toward $81,600 after briefly falling to $80,988 early in Friday’s US trading session, leaving the cryptocurrency just below a closely watched 50-day moving average near $81,781. The pullback came as oil prices surged to multi-month highs and US stocks opened lower, reinforcing pressure on assets that tend to struggle when energy-driven inflation fears return.

BTC/USD had slipped beneath its 50-day simple moving average, a technical indicator often used to assess whether a market’s medium-term trend remains intact. Keith Alan, co-founder of trading resource Material Indicators, said bitcoin was attempting to reclaim the $81,781 level before the daily close. Failure to do so, he said, could leave the market vulnerable to a move toward the $78,000 to $80,000 range.

The price action placed bitcoin near a zone already associated with significant market positioning. Separate market data had previously identified $80,000 to $81,500 as a support range connected to the aggregate cost basis of spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds. A sustained move below that band would place more ETF-linked holdings below their estimated purchase level, potentially weakening a price area that has so far drawn buying interest.

Oil rally adds to inflation concerns

The immediate macroeconomic backdrop was dominated by crude oil. Brent crude rose nearly 3% to $116 per barrel on Friday, its highest level since March 19, while West Texas Intermediate crude climbed above $102 per barrel for the first time since September 16.

Higher oil prices can feed through to transport, manufacturing and consumer costs, complicating expectations for inflation and monetary policy. For bitcoin and other assets sensitive to liquidity conditions, a prolonged oil shock could reduce the room central banks have to ease policy even if growth indicators weaken.

US equities reflected the cautious mood at the opening bell. The S&P 500 was down 0.6%, the Nasdaq Composite had fallen 0.2%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was 1.4% lower at the time of reporting. Bitcoin’s drop below $81,000 occurred alongside that broader retreat in risk assets rather than as an isolated crypto-market event.

The market reaction also showed a more complicated picture in bonds. The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note remained below 5% after reaching 4.939% on Thursday, its lowest level since September 23. Falling Treasury yields can signal that bond traders expect slower economic growth or believe longer-term inflation pressures will moderate, even while the oil market is pricing a substantial geopolitical risk premium.

Oil prices diverge from physical shipments

Robin Brooks, an economist and senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, pointed to a gap between crude prices and physical oil flows through the Persian Gulf. Brooks said shipments for many countries had neared pre-war levels and that Saudi Arabia’s flows had exceeded their pre-war average, even as oil prices continued to climb.

That separation suggests the rally in crude reflects concern over the vulnerability of future supply routes rather than evidence of a widespread current shortage. Oil markets frequently price the risk of disruption before a physical deficit appears, particularly when tensions involve key shipping corridors or major producing nations.

US production also provides a partial counterweight to fears of an immediate global supply crunch. The United States had reached crude output of 13.4 million barrels per day, according to the figures cited in the market discussion. High domestic production does not eliminate the effect of disruption risks on international benchmark prices, but it can limit the scale of an outright physical supply shortage.

For financial markets, the result is an uneasy split: oil is responding to geopolitical uncertainty, while Treasury yields have moved lower. Bitcoin is caught between those signals. Cheaper long-term borrowing costs would normally support risk assets, yet a persistent rise in energy costs could revive concerns that inflation will remain difficult to contain.

Bitcoin’s $80,000 area faces a technical test

Bitcoin’s return toward $81,600 reduced the scale of Friday’s decline but did not fully resolve the technical challenge. The 50-day moving average sits only modestly above the market, making the daily close more relevant than an intraday bounce.

A recovery above $81,781 would restore the moving average as potential support and ease the focus on the ETF cost-basis zone below. Repeated rejection at that level would leave the $80,000 area exposed, followed by the lower support range around $78,000 identified by Alan.

The coming sessions may therefore hinge less on a single bitcoin-specific catalyst than on whether oil’s surge persists and whether equities stabilize. With Brent at levels last seen in mid-March, energy prices have become an immediate variable for a bitcoin market testing support rather than extending its previous advance.
