Bitcoin held near $86,000 on Tuesday after reaching $87,350 the previous day, its highest price since Jan. 29, as falling oil prices and an improving long-term onchain momentum signal supported a calmer risk environment.
BTC/USD had retreated modestly from Monday’s peak but remained close to its 33-week high. TradingView data showed volatility easing following the breakout, while US stocks traded largely flat during President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The price action leaves Bitcoin at a technically sensitive point. A move above $87,350 would extend the recovery from August levels, while a reversal toward the mid-$84,000 range would test whether the latest advance has established durable support.
Oil briefly falls below $90 as pipeline reports ease supply concerns
West Texas Intermediate crude briefly dropped to $89.16 a barrel on Tuesday, its lowest level since Sept. 4, before recovering toward $92. The move came amid reports that Saudi Arabia had reopened the East-West Pipeline, a major route connecting oil-producing areas to Red Sea export terminals.
Three sources familiar with the situation said a full restoration of flows could take six to eight weeks. Even a partial return of the pipeline would give the market another supply route and could reduce some of the disruption risk priced into crude.
Oil prices have been a central macroeconomic concern because a sustained increase can feed through to transport, manufacturing and consumer costs. Tuesday’s decline offered a measure of relief, although the rebound toward $92 showed that traders remain cautious about the durability of the move.
Trump told the General Assembly that he expected a potential agreement to end the US-Iran war after the November midterm elections. “I believe we’ll make a deal right after the election because it doesn’t make sense for them not to,” he said.
The comments did not prompt a major move in US equities during the speech, but they added a political timetable to a conflict that has influenced energy-market pricing. Bitcoin’s ability to remain near its recent high while oil and geopolitical headlines moved sharply suggests that its latest rally has not depended on a single macro catalyst.
MVRV signal moves above its yearly trend line
Onchain indicators also point to a change in Bitcoin’s longer-term market structure. Glassnode said Bitcoin’s market value to realized value, or MVRV, ratio had moved above its 365-day moving average.
MVRV compares Bitcoin’s market capitalization with its realized capitalization, a measure based on the price at which coins last moved onchain. Traders use it to estimate whether the aggregate market is sitting on large unrealized gains or losses. A rising ratio generally indicates that the market value of held coins is increasing relative to their historical acquisition value.
Glassnode linked the latest crossover with similar signals observed in 2019 and 2023. Those earlier periods followed extended weak markets and coincided with improving price trends, though past cycle patterns do not establish a fixed timetable for future gains.
The MVRV ratio was reported at 1.62, up from 1.19 on Aug. 16. That rise indicates a substantial improvement in market valuation over a little more than a month, but it remains well below 3.7, a level Glassnode associated with past bull-market tops.
This positioning gives the metric a more constructive reading than an overheated one. Bitcoin has recovered enough for the annual trend measure to turn upward, while the ratio remains far from the levels that have historically appeared near late-cycle peaks.
$1.62 becomes a closely watched threshold
CryptoQuant tracked a shorter-term version of the same indicator and said the MVRV ratio’s 30-day moving average had broken out of a multi-month resistance zone below 1.5. According to the platform, the indicator had not achieved a similar break since January.
CryptoQuant said a sustained hold above 1.62 would be consistent with a broader trend reversal. It also identified $126,200 as a reference level based on prior all-time-high analysis, rather than an immediate price target.
The distinction matters for a market that has already advanced sharply from its August valuation. Onchain momentum measures can show whether a recovery is becoming more widely reflected in holders’ profitability, but they do not remove the risk of abrupt moves around geopolitical developments, oil-market disruptions or shifts in US monetary policy expectations.
Bitcoin’s short-term chart now presents a clearer set of levels than it did before Monday’s rally. The $87,350 area marks the immediate ceiling after the latest high, while the low-to-mid-$85,000 region has become a nearby zone where buyers would be expected to defend the breakout.
A period of consolidation around $86,000 would allow the market to test whether Monday’s move drew sustained demand rather than short-lived momentum buying. With oil off its recent highs and MVRV readings improving without entering historically extreme territory, Bitcoin’s recovery has gained a stronger technical and onchain foundation, even as the geopolitical backdrop remains unsettled.
