Bitcoin holds above $80000 as stocks steady

2026-10-16 16:06

Bitcoin held above $80,000 near Friday’s Wall Street open, trading around $82,000 after rebounding from that support level a day earlier. The stabilization came as markets reduced expectations for a Federal Reserve rate increase at its October meeting following comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, while South Korean equities recovered from a sharp technology-led sell-off.

TradingView data showed BTC/USD bouncing at $80,000 on Thursday before moving back toward $82,000. The recovery left bitcoin within a relatively narrow range as traders assessed whether a steadier macro backdrop could sustain demand after a volatile week across global equities and bond markets.

Derivatives pricing tracked by CME Group’s FedWatch Tool showed the implied probability of a 25-basis-point rate increase in October falling to 15% on Friday, from 27% the previous day. That repricing followed a public discussion between Warsh and International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva in which the Fed chair declined to offer guidance on the path of rates.

“I don’t prejudge meetings,” Warsh said. “I don’t believe in saying now what I might do at the meetings that we have in the balance of this year.”

The comments did not amount to a promise that rates would remain unchanged. They nevertheless removed an immediate source of pressure from markets that had been preparing for the possibility of further tightening. Higher policy rates tend to raise financing costs and can weigh on assets whose valuations depend heavily on future growth or liquidity conditions, including technology stocks and cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin finds support as Korean shares rebound

Bitcoin’s move above $80,000 coincided with a rebound in South Korea’s equity market after a week of heavy losses centered on technology shares. The KOSPI Composite Index closed Friday at 5,668, up 2% for the session, according to the figures provided, though it remained down 8.3% over the week.

The Korean market’s movements have drawn attention because it is heavily exposed to the global semiconductor cycle. Sharp changes in sentiment toward large chipmakers can have an outsized effect on the index, particularly when concerns over artificial-intelligence spending, earnings expectations, or stretched technology valuations prompt rapid selling.

The recovery in Seoul did not produce a uniform rebound across US markets. During Friday trading, the Nasdaq Composite was down 0.5%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.5%. The split suggested that selling pressure remained concentrated in growth and technology-linked shares even as the wider US equity market found some support.

Bitcoin’s ability to hold its Thursday low while technology stocks remained unsettled placed the $80,000 level at the center of short-term market attention. A sustained break below that area would weaken the immediate recovery pattern visible on TradingView charts. Holding above it, by contrast, keeps bitcoin insulated from a deeper retracement while broader markets search for direction.

Bond yields remain a constraint on risk assets

The shift in October rate expectations occurred alongside renewed strength in longer-term Treasury yields. The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield stood at 5.07% on Friday after briefly reaching 5.13% during the equity rebound attempt.

That level keeps financial conditions restrictive even if traders now see a smaller chance of an October rate increase. Treasury yields affect borrowing costs across mortgages, corporate debt and other financial markets, and elevated long-term yields can challenge valuations for companies and assets priced on the assumption of lower discount rates.

The Kobeissi Letter described recent bond-market behavior as unusually dependent on equity weakness, arguing that stock-market declines have been the only consistent catalyst for yield pullbacks since August. It characterized the environment as a “bull-bear” market, with the S&P 500 in the fifth year of its bull run but confronting persistent inflation, high yields and geopolitical risks including the US-Iran war.

That backdrop helps explain why Friday’s moves were measured rather than euphoric. The prospect of a less aggressive Fed near term offered relief, but it did not resolve the forces pushing long-dated yields higher. Markets remain sensitive to inflation data, Treasury demand and the durability of corporate earnings—particularly in technology, where expectations around artificial intelligence have become a major driver of equity prices.

Tight ranges leave bitcoin sensitive to macro shocks

For crypto traders, the immediate picture is one of stabilization rather than a decisive breakout. Bitcoin recovered from $80,000, but it had not yet established a clear move away from a price area tested during Thursday’s weakness. Its next direction may depend as much on bond yields and equity sentiment as on crypto-specific developments.

A lower implied chance of an October hike can support risk appetite by reducing concern that the Fed is preparing another near-term tightening step. Yet a 10-year yield above 5% means capital still has access to comparatively high returns in government debt, limiting the easy-liquidity conditions that have historically supported more speculative assets.

The divergence between the Nasdaq and the broader S&P 500 also bears watching. If technology shares continue to absorb the bulk of selling pressure, bitcoin may face intermittent volatility because both markets are widely traded as liquid expressions of growth and risk sentiment. Friday’s resilience above $80,000 showed that crypto buyers were prepared to defend a closely watched level, but the broader market signals remained mixed rather than clearly risk-on.
