Bitcoin falls below $82000 as liquidations surge

2026-10-13 02:18

Bitcoin fell below $82,000 on Monday evening as a sharp unwind in leveraged positions erased $771 million from crypto derivatives markets in 24 hours, according to CoinGlass. Long positions accounted for $685.6 million of the liquidations, showing that traders positioned for further gains bore the overwhelming share of forced closures.

The sell-off pushed Bitcoin down 2.8% over 24 hours to $81,382 at 9:20 p.m. ET, after the asset traded near $84,200 earlier in the day. Ethereum declined 4.6% to $2,425, while several large altcoins posted steeper losses as risk appetite deteriorated across digital assets.

The move coincided with weakness in Asian equities, adding to pressure on an already fragile crypto market. South Korea’s Kospi was down 6.1% by 10:45 a.m. local time on Tuesday, extending a regional stock-market decline that BitMine Immersion Technologies chairman Tom Lee said on X could be spilling into cryptocurrency markets.

Long liquidations accelerated the decline

Liquidations occur when an exchange or trading platform automatically closes a leveraged position because the trader’s collateral no longer meets required margin levels. They can intensify market moves: falling prices force long positions to close, those sales add further downward pressure, and additional positions can then be liquidated.

CoinGlass recorded $631.8 million in liquidations over the 12 hours leading into the sell-off, with roughly $600 million tied to long positions. The concentration of long liquidations suggests much of the decline came from a rapid reset in bullish leverage rather than from an even split between buyers and sellers.

Bitcoin’s slide was comparatively restrained against several major tokens. Zcash posted the largest decline among the 10 largest cryptocurrencies cited in the market data, falling 10.4% to $1,149. Solana dropped 7.5%, while XRP lost 6.4%.

Such moves can expose the different risk profiles within crypto markets. Bitcoin typically has deeper liquidity and a broader base of spot-market demand than smaller assets, while tokens with thinner order books or more concentrated derivatives activity can move more sharply when leveraged positions are unwound.

Spot ETFs recorded their weakest week since June

The derivatives sell-off followed a difficult week for U.S. spot cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net outflows of $681.1 million last week, their weakest weekly result since late June, according to SoSoValue. Spot Ethereum ETFs posted $542 million in net outflows during the same period.

ETF flows are separate from derivatives liquidations, but the combination gives a less supportive picture for prices. Liquidations show the immediate impact of leverage being removed from the market, while net ETF outflows indicate that more money left than entered the listed spot funds over the week.

The weekly withdrawals do not show where every seller redeployed capital, nor do they establish a single cause for Bitcoin’s decline. They do indicate that the spot ETF channel, which can bring substantial daily demand into Bitcoin and Ethereum, provided less support during the period than it had in stronger inflow weeks.

The equity-market backdrop also complicates the idea that crypto can trade independently during periods of broad risk aversion. When major stock indexes decline sharply, traders often reduce exposure across volatile assets, including technology shares, cryptocurrencies and leveraged derivatives. The Kospi’s morning drop arrived as crypto prices were already falling, reinforcing a defensive tone rather than creating a clearly isolated digital-asset event.

Treasury buyers continued accumulating

Corporate cryptocurrency treasury purchases continued despite the market decline. Strategy said Monday that it acquired 250 Bitcoin for approximately $21.5 million between Oct. 5 and Oct. 11, paying an average price of $86,194 per coin.

The purchase brought Strategy’s reported Bitcoin holdings to 848,250 BTC, based on the company’s disclosure. The acquisition price was above Bitcoin’s level late Monday, illustrating the gap that can emerge between corporate accumulation strategies and short-term market performance.

Strategy has built its approach around adding Bitcoin over extended periods rather than attempting to time daily price movements. Its latest purchase is modest beside its existing holdings, but it maintains a pattern of demand from a listed company that has tied its capital strategy closely to Bitcoin.

BitMine Immersion Technologies also reported expanding its Ethereum treasury. The company said it acquired 12,532 ETH over the past week, bringing its holdings to 6,028,946 ETH.

Those purchases did not prevent the day’s sell-off, and neither company’s disclosures establish a floor under market prices. They show that some corporate holders remain willing to accumulate through volatility, even as ETF flows weaken and derivatives traders are forced out of long positions.

Bitcoin’s movement below $82,000 leaves the market focused on whether selling pressure eases after the leverage reset. A sustained recovery would likely require spot demand to absorb remaining sales rather than relying on heavily borrowed positions, which were the first source of stress in Monday’s downturn.
