Bitcoin falls below $82000 after US CPI beats forecasts

2026-10-14 14:44

Bitcoin slipped below $82,000 after a hotter-than-expected US inflation report prompted traders to reassess the prospect of further Federal Reserve rate increases. BTC fell to $81,926 shortly after the Wall Street open on Oct. 14, while Treasury yields climbed and risk-sensitive assets weakened across traditional and digital markets.

The September Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% from a year earlier, above the 3.6% forecast, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. Core CPI, which strips out food and energy costs, increased 2.6% year on year, also exceeding expectations by 0.1 percentage point.

The figures revived pressure on markets already focused on whether the Federal Reserve can keep borrowing costs elevated without causing a sharper economic slowdown. Bitcoin had been trading around the $82,500-to-$83,400 area before the data and moved lower as the release hit screens.

Gasoline surge pushed up September inflation

Energy was the largest contributor to the monthly CPI increase. The BLS said gasoline accounted for more than half of the rise in the all-items index during September, while the gasoline index was up 9.1% year on year.

The broader energy index rose 5.2% over the month, accelerating from a 2.1% increase in August. That jump helped lift headline inflation even as the core measure, which policymakers often watch for a clearer view of domestic price pressures, also came in above estimates.

For markets, the combination matters more than a single increase in fuel costs. A stronger core reading can make it harder for the Fed to dismiss the report as an energy-driven distortion, particularly if price pressures remain persistent across services and other parts of the economy.

Federal Reserve officials have repeatedly tied any eventual easing in policy to sustained progress toward their 2% inflation target. September’s CPI figures instead moved rate expectations toward another increase.

Rate-hike odds rise before Oct. 28 meeting

CME Group’s FedWatch Tool showed markets pricing a 53.7% probability of a 25-basis-point rate increase at the Federal Reserve’s Oct. 28 meeting, up from 22.1% a day earlier. The probability of a second quarter-point increase by December stood at 50%.

Those changes illustrate how quickly a modest upside surprise in inflation can reshape short-term trading. Bitcoin and other speculative assets tend to face pressure when markets expect higher policy rates because safer government debt offers increasingly attractive returns while dollar liquidity becomes more expensive.

US Treasury yields rose after the report, with the benchmark 10-year yield reaching 5.329%, according to market data tracked by TradingView. That was roughly three basis points below fresh 24-year highs.

A 10-year yield above 5% changes the relative appeal of assets that do not generate income. Treasury securities offer predictable payments backed by the US government, while Bitcoin’s appeal rests more heavily on its potential as a scarce, liquid asset and a hedge against longer-term monetary or fiscal risks. In a period of rising yields, traders often demand clearer evidence of growth or liquidity support before increasing exposure to volatile assets.

Stocks, gold and crypto moved lower together

The immediate reaction extended beyond Bitcoin. TradingView data showed declines in cryptocurrency markets, gold and US stock-index futures after the CPI release. Gold fell as low as $4,079 per ounce despite its traditional role as an inflation hedge.

That parallel decline reflects the role of yields in the day’s market move. Higher inflation can support the case for holding hard assets over long periods, but an abrupt rise in Treasury yields can reduce demand for both gold and Bitcoin in the near term. The yield on a government bond is known in advance; returns on metals, equities and digital assets depend on future price movements.

Bitcoin’s drop below $82,000 therefore tracked a wider adjustment in asset prices rather than an isolated crypto-market event. The move also placed attention on whether the $81,000 area can hold as a near-term trading level after the inflation-driven sell-off.

Producer prices are the next test

Markets will receive another inflation signal with the September Producer Price Index, scheduled for release Friday. The PPI measures price changes faced by businesses and can offer an early indication of cost pressures that may eventually reach consumers.

A stronger-than-expected producer-price report would likely reinforce the repricing seen after CPI, especially if it points to persistent service or goods inflation beyond gasoline. A softer figure could ease some of the pressure on yields, though it would not erase the September consumer-price surprise or the change in expectations for the Oct. 28 Fed meeting.

The inflation report also arrives as the US government’s debt burden has continued to expand. US federal debt crossed $40 trillion in late summer, according to Treasury Department data. Larger borrowing needs can add to Treasury supply, a factor that markets have increasingly weighed alongside Federal Reserve policy and inflation expectations when setting long-term yields.

For Bitcoin traders, the next two weeks now carry a familiar macroeconomic sequence: producer-price data, changing Treasury yields, and a Federal Reserve decision. After September’s CPI print, the market’s focus has shifted from the timing of potential easing toward whether policy rates may need to rise again before the year ends.
