Bitcoin faces renewed pressure after US Fed holds rates steady

2026-10-29 01:39

Bitcoin came under renewed pressure after the Federal Reserve kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75% to 4% while signaling that inflation remains too high for policymakers to ease their focus. The 10-2 decision preserved current borrowing costs, but dissent from two officials who favored a quarter-point increase underscored a committee still weighing whether rates must rise further.

Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said inflation remained above the central bank’s 2% target and had exceeded that goal for nearly six years. His comments left markets focused less on Wednesday’s widely anticipated pause and more on the possibility that the next policy move could be another increase.

CME Group’s FedWatch tool placed the probability of a quarter-point rate increase by December at 78.4% as of Wednesday. It put the odds of at least a quarter-point increase by March at 67.3%. Those expectations raise the hurdle for Bitcoin and other risk-sensitive assets, which have had to contend with yields near 4% on short-term US government debt.

Warsh did not commit to a December increase, saying economic conditions could shift before officials gather again in roughly six weeks. That leaves incoming inflation figures, Treasury-market moves and corporate earnings as the immediate tests for markets trying to assess whether the Fed can remain on hold.

Inflation and yields move to the foreground

The next major catalyst is Thursday’s personal consumption expenditures report, the Fed’s preferred inflation gauge. A reading close to expectations for 3.7% annual inflation would reinforce the central bank’s argument that price pressures remain well above target and could keep the prospect of tighter policy alive.

Bitcoin often reacts sharply when rate expectations change because higher yields alter the appeal of holding assets without income. Treasury securities offer defined returns backed by the US government, while Bitcoin’s potential returns depend largely on price appreciation and market demand. A sustained rise in government bond yields can therefore redirect capital toward fixed-income markets and away from more volatile assets.

The 10-year US Treasury yield was sitting just below 5%, a level watched closely across financial markets. A move decisively above that threshold could tighten financial conditions even without an immediate Fed increase, raising borrowing costs for companies and households while putting pressure on valuations for technology stocks and digital assets.

The rate-sensitive environment does not automatically dictate Bitcoin’s direction. The cryptocurrency has also traded on fund flows, regulatory developments, derivatives positioning and its own liquidity conditions. Yet Wednesday’s Fed decision places macroeconomic signals back near the center of short-term trading, especially after policymakers offered no indication that rate cuts are approaching.

Technology earnings could amplify the reaction

Large technology companies are also set to report earnings during a week that could shape broader risk appetite. Markets have closely tracked whether spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure is translating into revenue and cash flow, particularly as major firms are expected to commit roughly $650 billion to $750 billion to new computing hardware this year.

That spending has supported equity-market optimism, but it has also raised expectations. If earnings reveal weaker demand, slower revenue growth or reduced forecasts for AI-related returns, technology shares could retreat. Bitcoin has frequently moved alongside high-growth technology stocks during periods when macroeconomic conditions dominate trading, making the earnings cycle relevant beyond equities.

A stronger-than-expected set of results could offer some support for risk assets, particularly if Treasury yields remain contained. Weak reports paired with a higher inflation reading would create a more difficult combination: the prospect of restrictive Fed policy alongside renewed pressure on equity valuations.

The interaction between these events is likely to matter more than the Fed’s decision to hold rates alone. Inflation data influences rate expectations; rate expectations influence Treasury yields and the dollar; those moves can then shape demand for risk assets across stocks and cryptocurrencies.

A cautious market into December

The Fed’s split vote adds a more hawkish edge to the outlook than a unanimous pause would have delivered. Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Federal Reserve President Beth Hammack both supported raising rates by a quarter point, showing that concern over inflation remains active within the committee rather than limited to the chair’s public remarks.

Traders now face a period in which each major economic release could reshape assumptions for December. Inflation that cools materially could reduce the perceived need for another increase. Persistent price growth, a resilient labor market or another rise in long-term Treasury yields would instead strengthen the case for maintaining restrictive policy for longer.

Bitcoin’s immediate weakness reflects that uncertainty rather than a confirmed decision to raise rates. The market is now positioned between Thursday’s inflation data, a consequential run of technology earnings and a December Fed meeting where policymakers may have a clearer view of whether inflation is easing or becoming entrenched again.
