Big stock drops follow earnings beats

2026-08-18 03:34

Strong revenue growth and headline earnings beats did not prevent sharp post-results selling in several widely watched technology names during the second-quarter reporting season, as traders focused on the durability of profits, the cash cost of artificial-intelligence infrastructure and the composition of reported earnings.

Alphabet’s quarterly release offered the clearest example of that tension. The company reported $119.796 billion in second-quarter revenue, up 24% from a year earlier, while Google Cloud revenue rose 82%. Yet shares fell 7.13% in the following session, from $342.09 to $317.69, after the company lifted its expected 2026 capital expenditure range to $195 billion-$205 billion.

Alphabet’s spending outlook overshadowed revenue growth

Alphabet reported quarterly capital expenditures of nearly $44.9 billion and said free cash flow turned negative during the period. The company had previously forecast full-year capital spending of $180 billion-$190 billion.

The larger spending plan places the market’s attention on how quickly Alphabet can turn its expanding data-center footprint, servers and AI products into recurring operating cash flow. Revenue growth alone offers only part of that answer when infrastructure costs rise at a similarly rapid pace.

Alphabet reported earnings per share of $9.11, up 294% from a year earlier. Its release also recorded about $97.983 billion of other income, largely tied to unrealized gains on equity holdings. That accounting gain boosted net income but sits outside the company’s core advertising, cloud and subscription operations.

Google Cloud’s operating profit rose 30%, providing evidence that the division is becoming a larger earnings contributor. Yet the gap between operating results and net profit gave traders a reason to look beyond the EPS headline. A gain on an equity stake can strengthen reported earnings in a quarter, but it does not generate the same recurring cash flow as advertising sales or cloud contracts.

The market response suggests that Alphabet’s spending program has moved from a secondary issue to a central valuation question. The company is committing capital at a scale normally associated with major industrial buildouts, while competing for computing capacity with other large technology groups.

SanDisk’s pricing gains drew scrutiny

SanDisk also reported strong quarterly numbers, but its share price declined 6.81% in the session after its Aug. 5 results. The stock moved from $1,350.50 to $1,258.58, according to the supplied market data.

The NAND flash and solid-state drive maker reported fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $8.965 billion, a 51% increase from the prior quarter, and a non-GAAP gross margin of 84.6%. Its outlook called for next-quarter revenue of $10.3 billion-$10.8 billion and non-GAAP EPS of $44-$46.

The company said roughly one-third of the quarter’s additional revenue came from higher unit shipments, while price increases accounted for the remaining two-thirds. That split shaped the debate around the results.

Rising prices can lift revenue and margins quickly in a tight memory market, especially when demand from AI servers increases demand for storage products. They can also reverse when supply catches up or customers delay purchases. Unit growth tends to offer a clearer view of whether demand is expanding independently of a favorable pricing cycle.

SanDisk’s guidance indicated that the company expected strong conditions to continue into the next quarter. The share decline showed that traders were looking beyond the size of the forecast and asking how much of the improvement could persist if NAND pricing normalizes.

SpaceX comparison requires care

The SpaceX figures included in the supplied material should not be treated as directly comparable with the public-market reactions in Alphabet and SanDisk. SpaceX is privately held and does not have publicly listed shares that trade in regular daily market sessions.

The material described SpaceX as reporting $7.814 billion in second-quarter revenue, up 92% year over year, a net loss of $541 million and adjusted EBITDA of $3.538 billion. It also cited $18.369 billion in quarterly capital expenditures, including roughly $15.828 billion related to AI spending.

Those numbers, if accurate, would point to the same broad financial pressure visible in Alphabet’s results: large technology companies can report fast revenue growth while absorbing substantial cash demands from computing infrastructure. But a reported move in a private company’s implied valuation or secondary-market share price is not equivalent to the next-day reaction in a listed stock.

Earnings quality has become a market test

The three reports point to a more demanding earnings-season framework than a simple beat-or-miss scorecard. Traders are separating revenue growth generated by rising prices from growth generated by additional sales volume. They are also distinguishing operating profit from gains created by financial holdings, and examining whether investment in AI equipment is financed by internally generated cash.

That approach does not mean capital expenditure is automatically a negative signal. Data centers, specialized chips and networking equipment can support future cloud revenue, enterprise software demand and AI services. The concern emerges when spending expands faster than visible monetization, leaving companies with lower free cash flow despite rising revenue.

The implications extend beyond individual technology stocks because large-cap software, cloud and semiconductor companies influence sentiment across risk assets. Cryptocurrency markets frequently react to changes in expectations for interest rates, liquidity and technology-sector growth, but they do not move in a fixed one-for-one relationship with equities.

Claims that digital assets fall by an exact percentage whenever technology indices decline require much stronger evidence than a single period of market data. Bitcoin, Ether and other tokens can respond differently depending on derivatives positioning, stablecoin liquidity, regulatory developments and macroeconomic conditions.

For cryptocurrency traders, the more useful signal from this earnings season is the direction of corporate cash generation and capital spending. A series of reports showing weaker margins, slower cloud demand or escalating infrastructure costs could reinforce caution across growth-oriented markets. By contrast, evidence that AI spending is producing sustained revenue and operating cash flow would reduce one of the main concerns now weighing on technology valuations.
