Artmarket publishes 2026 half year financial report

2026-10-01 19:48

Artmarket.com has filed its 120-page financial report for the six months ended June 30, 2026, with France’s Autorité des marchés financiers, while disclosing that the Ehrmann family and Groupe Serveur have continued to increase their holdings in the art-market data company without seeking control through a public takeover or buyout offer.

The report, published through Artprice.com and Actusnews, places shareholder equity at €30.826 million as of June 30. Artmarket also said its major physical asset—a collection of auction catalogues and manuscripts spanning 1700 to the present—was valued at €42 million in January 2025.

Groupe Serveur remained Artmarket’s largest shareholder, holding 30.16% of share capital and 45.78% of voting rights, excluding the Ehrmann family’s separate holdings, according to the company. Artmarket said no shares had been sold since 2015, while the Ehrmann family and Groupe Serveur had made further purchases under disclosures submitted to the AMF.

The company cited three declarations filed through the AMF’s ONDE disclosure system: No. 2026DD1133787, published on August 17, and Nos. 2026DD1134265 and 2026DD1134267, both published on August 20. Artmarket said the transactions took place during permitted trading windows and were reported within statutory deadlines.

Board member purchases trigger MAR reporting

Artmarket said Nadège Ehrmann, a board member, sought to acquire additional shares and made the required notification after the aggregate value of her transactions passed the threshold set under Article 19 of the EU Market Abuse Regulation. That rule requires people discharging managerial responsibilities, and those closely associated with them, to disclose transactions involving an issuer’s shares once the applicable annual threshold is reached.

The company said the acquisitions were not intended to trigger an offer publique d’achat, or takeover bid, nor an offer publique de retrait, the French mechanism for a public buyout. It added that changes in the company’s share price had not altered the Ehrmann family’s intention to raise its stake.

The ownership disclosures place governance and free-float considerations near the center of the filing. With Groupe Serveur holding a substantially larger share of voting rights than share capital, its position reflects the company’s share structure and gives the group considerable influence over shareholder decisions. Artmarket reported more than 18,000 individual shareholders in its TPI analysis, excluding foreign shareholders, companies, banks, mutual funds and UCITS.

Stable staffing and limited reliance on debt

Artmarket said it had maintained an average workforce of 49 employees for several years. The company expects group expenses to remain close to their 2025 level until revenue reaches €90 million, an operating-cost target that indicates management sees capacity in its existing technology and data infrastructure before needing a major expansion in staffing or fixed costs.

The company also said it has not used bond financing and has never increased its share capital, apart from a previous employee stock-option exercise. Those statements point to a funding model centered on internally generated resources and existing equity rather than recurring dilution or debt-market borrowing.

Artmarket said it allocates 80% of its resources each year to research and development and database development. Artprice by Artmarket has repeatedly received France’s “Innovative Company” label from Bpifrance, the public investment bank, according to the company, and intends to apply again for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.

Auction database remains the group’s principal asset

The filing emphasizes the scale of Artprice’s art-market information business, which sits alongside the group’s physical archive. Artmarket said its database covers more than 918,000 listed artists and over 30 million auction results from three centuries of sales activity. It said the platform adds more than 1.2 million records annually and structures information through 112 data-integrity fields.

The company said its relationships with 7,200 auction houses supply the database, while Artprice Images provides more than 181 million digital images. Artmarket also reported that its overall platform contains 212 million images, including more than 3 million very-high-resolution images.

Artmarket cited its 2026 Art Market Report in saying that the first half of the year produced the highest number of lots sold in the history of worldwide auctions. The company did not provide the corresponding lot total in the statement.

The group’s archive of catalogues and manuscripts adds a separate layer to its data operation. Auction catalogues can preserve provenance, estimates, buyer and seller information where available, and historical sale records that may not appear in modern online listings. For an art-price database, the ability to link those older records with current transactions can strengthen long-term comparable-sales analysis, particularly for works that return to auction decades after an earlier sale.

Online auction activity and AI shape strategy

Artmarket said Sotheby’s, Christie’s and Bonhams have indicated they expect to reach end-of-2030 targets for shifting operations online by 2027. It also cited market studies estimating that more than 180 million people buy art online across global markets.

The company is positioning its editorial and database operations for a search environment increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. It said Artprice News has been indexed in Google AI Overview and that its multilingual editorial operation has produced more than 3,500 news reports. Artmarket added that its art-market news content is cited weekly on average by specialist outlets.

Artmarket cited Gartner Group and Europol Innovation Lab in stating that 70% of online data was synthetic and uncontrolled as of June 30, 2026. The company used that estimate to argue for databases with documented reference records rather than material generated or repeated without clear provenance.

It also cited an AI-in-art market forecast projecting growth from $212 million in 2022 to $5.8 billion in 2032, representing a 40.5% compound annual growth rate. Artmarket did not identify the publisher of that forecast in the statement.

Infrastructure claims and digital publishing plans

A Mazars audit cited by Artmarket found that the group’s infrastructure processed 55 megabytes of data per second per employee, which the company described as more than 25 times the European average. Artmarket also said its data-center operations reduced energy consumption by 18% per year at equivalent computing power, citing its corporate social responsibility report.

The company reported 9.3 million members and said it publishes art-market trends in 121 countries and 11 languages. Its annual information-service subscriptions range from €1,600 to €2,500, according to the statement.

Artmarket also promoted the digital distribution of “Dialogue Between a Thinker and AI,” a 1,800-page work available online in 16 languages and dialects. The company said certified distribution data from Artprice and its partners recorded 21.9 million English-language downloads across 123 countries. A print edition in English and French is planned for late October.

The filing presents Artmarket’s strategy as a combination of proprietary auction records, historical archives, image databases and AI-oriented publishing tools. Its immediate financial disclosures offer few new operating figures beyond equity, staffing and cost expectations, leaving future reports to show whether the company’s large data investment converts into higher revenue without a comparable rise in expenses.
