Apple launches iPhone Duo foldable at $1999

2026-09-10 04:17

Opinion

Apple has entered the foldable smartphone market with the $1,999 iPhone Duo, its most expensive iPhone yet, using a book-style design built around a roughly 7.6-inch internal display. The device was unveiled Sept. 9 alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which start at $1,199 and $1,299 respectively, placing Apple’s annual hardware refresh firmly at the high end of the consumer electronics market.

Pre-orders for all three models open Sept. 12, with retail sales scheduled to begin Sept. 18. Apple said the two Pro models will start with 256GB of storage, eliminating the lower-capacity entry configurations that previously helped keep flagship pricing lower.

The launch also marked the first annual iPhone event led by John Ternus following his appointment as Apple’s chief executive. Ternus, who previously oversaw hardware engineering at the company, introduced a product lineup that concentrates on larger screens, higher storage tiers and premium pricing rather than a low-cost expansion of the iPhone range.

iPhone duo targets the large-screen premium segment

The iPhone Duo’s inner display gives Apple a format closer to a compact tablet when unfolded, while retaining a phone-sized form when closed. Apple said the device supports Apple Pencil and is designed for multitasking and applications that benefit from a larger workspace.

That approach puts the Duo in direct competition with book-style foldables already offered by Samsung, Google and several Chinese handset manufacturers. Apple has largely avoided the category while foldable devices developed into a small but higher-priced part of the smartphone market. Its arrival adds a major brand with a deeply established hardware and services ecosystem, but also tests whether Apple customers will accept a nearly $2,000 starting price for a first-generation folding model.

IDC expects global smartphone shipments to decline 13.9% in 2026, to 1.09 billion units, according to the figures supplied in the launch materials. The research firm nevertheless expects foldable smartphone shipments to grow by about 20%, suggesting that manufacturers are looking to premium niche categories for growth while the broader phone market contracts.

Apple’s pricing gives it more room to prioritize revenue per device rather than shipment volume. A $1,999 foldable is substantially above the new $1,199 entry price of the iPhone 18 Pro and would need to appeal to buyers willing to pay for screen size, portability and Apple’s software integration rather than basic phone upgrades.

Higher starting storage lifts the pro lineup

Apple’s decision to begin both iPhone 18 Pro models at 256GB also raises the effective entry point for its most important phone line. Storage upgrades have long been a profitable part of smartphone pricing, particularly as consumers capture higher-resolution photos and video and install larger applications.

The Pro models were the primary driver of iPhone growth in Apple’s most recent quarter. Apple reported iPhone revenue of $54.252 billion, up 22% from a year earlier and representing about 49.6% of company-wide revenue. That performance shows why Apple continues to place its most visible product announcements around premium devices rather than broad discounts or lower-cost models.

Hardware remains a considerably lower-margin business than Apple’s services segment. Apple reported a 40.1% gross margin for hardware in its latest results, compared with a 75.6% gross margin for services. Higher-priced iPhones can improve hardware revenue and gross profit dollars, while the installed base creates opportunities for subscriptions, app sales, cloud storage and other recurring services.

Apple said its installed base exceeds 2.5 billion active devices. That scale gives the company a large existing audience for a new iPhone form factor, although it does not guarantee rapid adoption of the Duo. Foldables carry practical questions around durability, screen creases, repair costs and battery life that Apple will need to address through product performance rather than brand recognition alone.

Late october deliveries may limit near-term sales

The source material describes iPhone Duo deliveries as beginning in late October. That timing would constrain its contribution to the current quarter compared with the Pro models, which reach stores in September. Apple’s September-quarter results may therefore reflect early demand signals and pre-orders more than meaningful Duo shipment volumes.

The timing also concentrates attention on the December holiday quarter, traditionally Apple’s most commercially significant period. A late-October release gives the company a window to establish supply before peak seasonal shopping, though the device’s price places it beyond the range of many mainstream upgrade cycles.

Apple shares closed around $313.55 on the day of the event, down about 0.84%, based on the market figures provided. That response fits a familiar pattern: across the past 16 major iPhone launch days, Apple shares rose five times and fell 11 times, producing an average decline of roughly 0.7% on launch day.

The longer record has been more favorable. Over the 60 trading days following those events, the shares rose 12 times, with an average gain of about 4.2%. The strongest period followed the iPhone 11 launch, when the stock rose 21.51%, while the weakest followed the iPhone XR and XS cycle, when it fell 21.68%.

Those historical moves offer limited guidance for the Duo’s commercial reception. Apple’s share price will be shaped by supply availability, consumer demand, margins and its broader financial outlook, not simply by the novelty of a foldable device. The immediate test is whether the company can turn a new hardware category into a durable premium product line while preserving the scale and profitability of its Pro-focused iPhone business.
