Anthropic reports revenue surge ahead of IPO

2026-10-15 12:30

Anthropic told prospective backers that third-quarter revenue reached $16.8 billion and that its adjusted profit and quarterly cash flow had turned positive, according to accounts of a closed-door San Francisco presentation held ahead of a planned initial public offering. The company is reportedly weighing a valuation above $2 trillion, a level that would make its listing one of the largest tests yet of how public markets value model-focused artificial intelligence companies.

The revenue figure, if confirmed in Anthropic’s eventual S-1 registration statement, would imply an annualized pace of roughly $67 billion. That would place a proposed $2 trillion valuation at about 30 times annualized revenue, using a single-quarter run rate. Such a multiple would sit above the rough 21-times sales comparison cited for Nvidia, whose market value was placed at $5.33 trillion against $253.5 billion in trailing 12-month revenue.

The comparison is imperfect. Nvidia’s sales figure reflects reported revenue over four quarters, while Anthropic’s implied figure annualizes one quarter during a period of exceptional growth. Yet that gap will likely be central to the IPO debate: Anthropic would need public-market buyers to accept that its current growth rate, enterprise demand and model-development position justify a valuation usually reserved for companies with far longer operating histories and more transparent financial results.

Revenue growth has remained unusually steep

Accounts of the presentation put Anthropic’s revenue at $4.7 billion in the first quarter of 2026, $11.5 billion in the second quarter and $16.8 billion in the third. Those figures total about $33 billion for the first nine months of the year.

Revenue rose roughly 145% from the first to second quarter, then about 46% from the second to third. The slower percentage growth in the third quarter still represents an increase of about $5.3 billion in quarterly revenue, larger in dollar terms than the company’s entire reported first-quarter base.

If Anthropic were to expand fourth-quarter revenue by roughly 40% from the third-quarter level, its 2026 revenue would exceed $40 billion. That outcome would require the company to sustain an exceptionally high rate of enterprise and developer spending on its products while continuing to provide the computing capacity needed to serve usage.

The third-quarter revenue was described as more than 3.6 times Anthropic’s full-year 2025 revenue. On that basis, the company appears to be entering public markets while its business is expanding faster than the disclosure framework normally available to public-equity buyers. Its S-1 filing would therefore carry unusual weight, particularly for details on customer concentration, contract duration, recurring subscription revenue and API consumption.

Profit claims await the S-1 detail

Anthropic reportedly told the San Francisco gathering that it achieved adjusted profitability and positive quarterly cash flow. The presentation did not disclose GAAP profit, gross margin, or the expenses and accounting items excluded from its adjusted result.

Those omissions leave open major questions about the economics behind the revenue growth. Large AI model providers incur substantial costs for data-center capacity, model training, inference and engineering talent. Positive cash flow in a quarter can also differ significantly from sustained profitability once stock-based compensation, depreciation, long-term cloud obligations and other recurring expenses are fully reflected.

The S-1 would also be expected to provide greater detail on Anthropic’s commitments to cloud providers. Compute purchasing agreements can give an AI company access to the infrastructure required for rapid growth, but they can also create large fixed obligations if customer demand fails to match planned capacity.

Revenue composition will be another closely watched measure. Anthropic has not publicly detailed in the presentation how much of its revenue comes from enterprise subscriptions, API use or direct product sales. Each category carries different implications for revenue durability, margins and the company’s ability to forecast demand.

A $100 billion offering would reshape the IPO calendar

The fundraising attached to the offering was described as potentially exceeding $100 billion. At that scale, the transaction would surpass the $75 billion reportedly raised by SpaceX in its June 2026 IPO, which involved about 555.6 million shares sold at $135 each.

It would also eclipse the previous landmark offerings often used as reference points for global equity issuance. Saudi Aramco raised $29.4 billion including its greenshoe option in 2019 and 2020, while Alibaba raised $25 billion in its 2014 listing.

A deal of that size would require demand from a broad set of institutions, index-linked funds and long-term equity buyers. It could also tighten the calendar for other technology listings, as portfolio managers weigh whether to reserve capital for a company positioned as a direct public-market exposure to frontier AI models.

Anthropic’s valuation has reportedly climbed quickly through private financing rounds, moving from $61.5 billion in March 2025 to $183 billion after a $13 billion financing in September 2025, then to $380 billion in February 2026. A move above $2 trillion would represent a far sharper re-rating than those earlier steps and would raise the bar for post-listing performance.

Crypto markets may watch the listing as a risk signal

The potential IPO arrives during a weaker stretch for AI-linked public equities and rising stress in parts of AI-related credit. CoreWeave bond yields approached 15% on the day of the Anthropic meeting, according to the presentation accounts, indicating that lenders were demanding high returns for exposure to the sector’s financing needs.

That backdrop gives the proposed listing relevance beyond equity markets. Bitcoin and major digital assets often trade alongside high-growth technology shares during periods when traders are focused on liquidity, interest rates and appetite for risk. A large IPO can become a focal point for portfolio positioning without automatically causing a sustained move in cryptocurrency prices.

Crypto traders may also distinguish between the listing’s short-term market effects and its longer-term implications for AI-linked blockchain projects. A successful Anthropic flotation could concentrate public-market attention on a conventional corporate AI business with large revenue, proprietary models and access to institutional capital. Projects issuing tokens around AI narratives would face more direct comparison with a newly listed company required to publish audited financials and formal risk disclosures.

The reported timetable calls for a formal roadshow as early as the week of Nov. 9, following a confidential S-1 submission dated June 1 and the Oct. 14 San Francisco session. Anthropic is said to be aiming for a listing before Thanksgiving, though the schedule remains subject to market conditions and regulatory review.
