Ansem says crypto pullback triggers deleveraging

2026-10-15 12:45

A broad cryptocurrency market pullback has triggered a fresh round of forced long-position closures, according to crypto trader Ansem, who described the sell-off as the first substantial deleveraging event since the market’s late-June bottom.

Speaking on the Market Bubble podcast released on Oct. 15, Ansem said the decline had removed excessive leverage from derivatives markets without, in his view, breaking the larger upward channel that has defined prices since June. He pointed to continued activity around tokenization and stablecoins as evidence that demand themes supporting the market have not disappeared during the correction.

The remarks came after a sharp 24-hour decline that, according to figures cited in the discussion, produced nearly $1 billion in forced liquidations across digital-asset trading platforms and pulled total crypto market capitalization to about $2.81 trillion. Long positions accounted for most of the forced closures, reflecting a market that had become heavily positioned for further gains before prices reversed.

Forced liquidations occur when a trader’s collateral can no longer support a leveraged position. Platforms automatically close the trade, often selling assets into a falling market. When prices move quickly, those sales can deepen the decline and trigger liquidations elsewhere, creating a feedback loop that is particularly severe in thin or fragmented markets.

Deleveraging tests a market built on leverage

Ansem’s assessment separates the recent decline from a broader bearish reversal. His argument rests on market structure rather than a specific price target: leverage had built up after the June low, and the current retreat has reduced that exposure.

That distinction matters for traders holding spot assets alongside derivatives positions. A holder who owns Bitcoin or Solana without borrowed funds can remain exposed to price moves without facing automatic liquidation, while a trader using large leverage multiples can lose a position even if the underlying asset later recovers.

Ansem said he uses a “70/30” allocation framework designed around that difference. He described placing 70% of capital into core spot positions, including Bitcoin and Solana, while reserving 30% for higher-volatility trades and themes such as MemeFi.

The approach is intended to limit the damage from the type of drawdowns he described as common 20% pullbacks. Ansem said the larger core allocation is generally left unchanged during such declines, while the smaller trading portion gives him room to take shorter-term risk without placing the entire portfolio under pressure.

His warning was directed particularly at aggressive leverage in choppy markets. A position that appears manageable in a steady rally can become vulnerable when prices gap lower, funding costs change, or liquidity vanishes from order books. The latest washout illustrated how quickly a crowded long trade can unravel after momentum turns.

Liquidity is spreading across competing venues

The Market Bubble discussion also focused on a changing derivatives landscape as U.S.-regulated platforms expand their perpetual futures offerings while onchain perpetual exchanges gain volume alongside established offshore venues.

Perpetual futures are contracts that allow traders to take leveraged long or short positions without a fixed expiry date. They have become central to crypto price discovery, but their growth across multiple trading venues has also dispersed liquidity.

Ansem argued that this fragmentation can amplify sudden moves. Liquidity is now distributed among offshore exchanges, regulated U.S. platforms, and decentralized onchain systems rather than concentrated in a smaller group of venues. During a rapid sell-off, price differences and uneven order-book depth can contribute to cascading margin failures across platforms.

The outcome is a market where leverage can be unwound in several places at once. Traders may face a sharper move than they would expect from looking at a single exchange’s order book or liquidation data. Fragmentation also complicates attempts to judge whether a price move reflects sustained spot selling or a derivatives-driven flush.

Token supply remains central to MemeFi risk

Ansem connected the appeal of MemeFi and meme-token trading to dissatisfaction with token launches that begin with high fully diluted valuations, limited circulating supply, and large future unlock schedules.

Fully diluted valuation measures a token’s value as if its entire eventual supply were already circulating. A token can therefore appear scarce at launch while having substantial allocations scheduled to enter the market later through team, venture, ecosystem, or community distributions.

Those unlocks do not guarantee selling pressure, but they increase the supply that the market may need to absorb. Ansem contrasted such structures with meme-token launches that distribute tokens more openly from the outset, reducing the gap between the circulating supply and the total supply used to calculate valuation.

The argument helps explain why some traders have shifted attention toward tokens whose price discovery occurs in public markets immediately, rather than projects whose future float remains heavily dependent on scheduled releases. It also places greater emphasis on tracking unlock calendars and token-distribution terms rather than relying only on headline market capitalization.

Solana activity and disciplined exits

Pump.fun featured prominently in the conversation as an example of an application generating sustained activity on Solana. Ansem said the token-creation platform produces annualized revenue in the hundreds of millions of dollars, framing that cash flow as a protocol-level economic contribution tied to user activity and trading throughput.

The discussion did not provide a full valuation model for Pump.fun or Solana, but it treated application revenue as relevant to assessing whether network activity is purely speculative or generating recurring fees. That is a more concrete benchmark than token price alone, particularly during periods when market sentiment is volatile.

Ansem also referenced exposure to STRK, PUMP, HYPE and GRASS, describing them as assets he viewed as mispriced. The podcast excerpts did not include detailed valuation estimates or price targets for those tokens.

For Hyperliquid’s HYPE token, Ansem emphasized trade management over long-term conviction. He described using laddered profit-taking for momentum assets, including recovering the original principal after a position doubles or when the token approaches a resistance level.

That method leaves a trader with reduced exposure after a successful move while preserving some upside if momentum continues. In a market that has just absorbed a large leverage washout, the approach reflects a practical divide between holding core spot assets and managing volatile token trades where sharp reversals can erase gains quickly.
