Alphabet stock drop leads tech selloff while Eli Lilly rises

2026-10-30 12:35

Alphabet reported a sharp shift in market sentiment on Oct. 29 as its record one-day selloff highlighted Wall Street's growing debate over AI-related capital expenditure. Despite delivering 25% revenue growth, the Google parent's accelerating investment in data centres and computing infrastructure pushed quarterly free cash flow into a $9.1 billion outflow. The stock fell 12.64%, wiping out roughly $500 billion in market value and marking Alphabet's steepest single-session decline since its 2004 listing.

Investors focused less on Alphabet's headline revenue, which reached $127.577 billion in the third quarter, and more on the rising cost of building AI-ready infrastructure. Capital spending climbed 114% from a year earlier to $51.355 billion, surpassing operating cash flow of $42.290 billion. That mismatch led to a free-cash-flow outflow of $9.065 billion, following a $5.855 billion outflow in the prior quarter and contrasting sharply with a $24.461 billion inflow a year before. Analysts had expected roughly $2.7 billion of positive free cash flow, amplifying concerns for a company whose valuation is increasingly tied to expectations of AI-led growth.

Within Alphabet's operations, Google Cloud was the standout performer. The unit generated $30.709 billion in revenue, up 103% year on year, underscoring the strength of demand for cloud and AI-related services. Search and other advertising revenue grew 12% to $63.35 billion but came in below consensus forecasts near $65 billion. The mixed picture left traders reassessing a familiar AI-era question: whether rapid cloud expansion and future product innovation can justify the near-term cash demands of a massive infrastructure buildout.

Big Tech's spending bill reaches a new stage

Alphabet's results arrived as investors were already scrutinising capital-spending plans across the largest US technology companies. Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta have collectively been cited as planning more than $720 billion in spending this year, approximately three times the level of two years ago. Three of the four companies reportedly have negative free cash flow, while Meta recorded its first quarterly free-cash-flow deficit since going public.

Free cash flow, defined as cash remaining after operating expenses and capital expenditure, has become a key barometer for technology groups building AI infrastructure. For companies constructing server farms, purchasing specialised chips and expanding power and cooling capacity, free cash flow reveals how quickly AI ambitions are consuming internal resources.

A negative free-cash-flow figure does not automatically signal financial strain. Alphabet and Amazon, for instance, continue to produce substantial operating cash flow, and large investments in data-centre assets can support revenue growth over many years. However, the shift into negative territory appears to be reshaping market tolerance for missed targets. Revenue growth alone may no longer satisfy traders if capital expenditure rises faster and cloud profits fail to keep pace.

Amazon's latest quarterly update added to the pressure in after-hours trading. The company reported $201.9 billion in revenue, slightly below market expectations, while Amazon Web Services produced $46.0 billion of revenue, up 39.3% year on year. AWS growth accelerated from 37% in the previous quarter, but Amazon's holiday-season guidance fell short of some analysts' forecasts.

Over the past 12 months, Amazon generated $168.3 billion in operating cash flow, an increase of 29% according to its results. Yet free cash flow remained negative, with a net outflow of $42.4 billion. The company reiterated its 2026 capital-spending plan of $220 billion and signalled that expenditure could rise further in 2027. In after-hours trading, Amazon's shares hovered around $225.99, down about 4.2% from the regular-session close after earlier steeper declines.

Intel guidance revives concerns over hardware demand

Intel shares also came under pressure after the closing bell, despite what appeared to be solid third-quarter results. The chipmaker reported revenue of $16.513 billion, up 21% year on year, with its data-centre business posting a 78% revenue increase. Those numbers had fuelled optimism about Intel's recovery and contributed to a year-to-date share-price gain of more than 130% prior to the earnings announcement.

The company's guidance, however, was weaker than expected. Intel forecast fourth-quarter revenue in a range of $15 billion to $16 billion, compared with Wall Street expectations around $17 billion, and projected a gross margin of 37%. Management cited softer PC demand that may extend into the first half of 2027, rising memory costs and an incident at an Israeli plant expected to reduce fourth-quarter revenue by roughly $300 million.

In after-hours trading, Intel shares traded near $70.87, about 25.8% below their previous close. The magnitude of the move underscored how sensitive semiconductor valuations have become to changes in guidance, profit margins and evidence that AI-linked demand is broadening beyond a narrow group of leading data-centre suppliers.

Looking ahead, Nvidia's mid-November earnings report has taken on additional significance for the broader market. The company's outlook for data-centre revenue, supply conditions and gross margins will offer an important test of whether hyperscaler spending on AI infrastructure is translating into durable end-demand for AI hardware or simply pulling forward cash costs faster than revenues can catch up.

Healthcare offers a contrasting earnings picture

While large technology stocks sold off, healthcare provided a notable counterpoint. Shares in Eli Lilly rose 6.57% to a record high after the company reported a combination of rapid revenue growth and strong cash generation. Third-quarter revenue reached $24.397 billion, up 39% and ahead of estimates near $22.6 billion. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $7.48, beating expectations of $6.49.

Lilly generated free cash flow of $8.219 billion, representing a clear positive inflow. The weight-loss and diabetes medicine Mounjaro delivered $10.72 billion in global revenue, up 65%, while Zepbound produced $5.35 billion, up 49%. Together, these two products accounted for roughly 66% of Lilly's quarterly revenue, highlighting their central role in the company's growth story.

The company raised its full-year revenue guidance for the third time this year, to a range of $91 billion to $92 billion from a previous range of $85 billion to $87 billion. Unit volumes climbed 53% even as net pricing fell roughly 15%, signalling broadening demand despite pricing pressures. Lilly's share price closed at $1,373, assigning the company a market capitalisation of around $1.29 trillion.

Other healthcare names also advanced. Moderna gained 4.01%, Merck rose 3.83% and Amgen added 1.97%. According to EPFR, US healthcare-focused equity funds attracted $4.72 billion over the prior two weeks, while positioning data cited in the market indicated that hedge funds increased healthcare exposure by $1.69 billion and trimmed semiconductor holdings.

Implications for cryptocurrency markets

Broader equity benchmarks softened amid the sector rotations. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.38%, the S&P 500 slipped 0.30% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.25%. Cboe's Volatility Index hovered near 19, signalling an uptick in expected equity-market volatility without yet approaching levels typically associated with widespread market stress.

For cryptocurrency traders, the immediate transmission channel from these developments is risk appetite rather than any direct relationship between cloud capital expenditure and digital-asset fundamentals. Bitcoin and other highly liquid cryptoassets trade around the clock and across weekends, allowing investors to express views on macro data, interest rates and earnings-related sentiment even when US equity markets are closed.

At the same time, short-term US government bills yielding more than 4% continue to compete with speculative assets for capital. Higher risk-free rates raise the bar for investments whose valuations depend heavily on expectations of future growth, abundant liquidity or expanding multiples.

The Federal Reserve's Dec. 9 policy meeting remains a key upcoming event for global risk markets, including cryptocurrencies. Any shift in expectations for the future path of interest rates could influence discount rates, borrowing costs and demand for leveraged trades across technology stocks, digital assets and other high-volatility segments. In that context, the interaction between Big Tech's AI spending cycle, earnings quality and macro policy signals will likely remain central to near-term crypto-market dynamics.
