AI internship pay is diverging sharply in 2026, with elite U.S. research programs offering daily compensation above 5,000 yuan while many China-based large-model internships remain in the 200-to-1,000-yuan range. The gap is most visible between research-track roles tied to frontier-model development and standard engineering or operations placements, creating pay differences of as much as 25 times within the same broad AI field.
OpenAI’s six-month Residency offers a monthly salary of $18,333, which works out to about 5,625 yuan per working day using the conversion cited in the program comparison. Residents are assigned to full-time work on large language models, reinforcement learning, alignment and AI safety, according to OpenAI’s program description. The role requires participants to work from San Francisco at least three days each week and includes the possibility of conversion into a permanent position.
Anthropic’s AI Safety Fellows program sits close behind on cash compensation. Anthropic lists weekly pay of $3,850 for its four-month fellowship, equivalent to roughly 5,198 yuan per day under the same calculation. Fellows work 40 hours each week and receive a separate monthly compute allocation of $15,000, according to the program’s materials. That budget gives participants access to the computing resources needed to run experiments, a costly element of advanced AI research that many smaller organizations cannot easily provide.
The level of pay reflects how labs are treating selected interns and fellows less like temporary trainees and more like early-career researchers contributing to high-priority model development and safety work.
Safety fellowships move closer to research jobs
Anthropic’s published pay has risen rapidly. Its AI Safety Fellows program listed weekly compensation of $2,100 in 2024, compared with $3,850 in 2026, an increase of more than 80% over two years. The company said more than 80% of the first cohort had previously published research papers, while more than 40% later moved into full-time roles.
Those figures suggest that the fellowship is aimed at applicants who have already cleared a high academic or technical bar. The program’s structure also illustrates a growing division inside AI hiring: candidates with demonstrated research output in alignment, machine learning or related fields can command compensation closer to that of junior employees, while conventional internship roles remain priced much lower.
OpenAI separately posted an AI safety fellowship scheduled to run from Sept. 14, 2026, through Feb. 5, 2027. The program was presented as a short-term training opportunity connected to safety research, extending the competition for candidates who can work on model evaluation, robustness and alignment.
Big tech rates remain high, but vary by specialization
U.S. technology companies outside the frontier-lab group also offer substantial intern compensation, though most posted rates fall below the leading research fellowships.
Meta internship references in the comparison placed pay around $70 per hour, or roughly 3,780 yuan per working day, with a stated monthly range of $7,188 to $12,134 and about $2,600 a month for housing. Other cited Meta pay references ranged from $56 to $82 per hour.
Google’s listed internship rate was $62.98 per hour, equivalent to about 3,400 yuan per day. The comparison cited annualized undergraduate compensation equivalents of $92,000 to $122,000, while PhD-track roles ranged from $113,000 to $150,000. Location affects the figures: examples in the dataset included roughly $56.73 an hour in Mountain View and around $50 an hour in Seattle.
Nvidia’s U.S. internship pay showed a wider spread by role and seniority. The comparison placed average pay at $39 per hour, or about 2,106 yuan per day. Yet cited job ranges extended from $20 to $71 per hour for undergraduate software engineering roles and from $30 to $94 per hour for PhD research positions. At the upper end, a $94 hourly rate would exceed 5,000 yuan per day.
The specialization premium is also visible inside OpenAI. A cited non-technical go-to-market strategy internship paid $36 per hour, or around 1,944 yuan per day, far below the rates associated with research-heavy technical placements.
China’s market separates elite research programs from standard roles
China-based AI internships show the same internal segmentation, although their cash rates are generally lower. The compilation put median monthly university internship pay at 5,000 yuan in 2026, rising to around 10,000 yuan for technical roles in first-tier cities.
ByteDance’s Top Seed research internship was listed at 2,000 yuan per day, or 40,000 yuan a month assuming 20 working days. Its standard research-and-development and algorithm internships were listed from 500 yuan per day from Jan. 1, with some AI roles reaching 550 yuan. The difference places the company’s elite research program in a distinct compensation category from its regular technical intern pipeline.
Xiaomi’s cited roles ranged from 300 to 400 yuan daily for standard large-model algorithm interns to 1,000-to-1,100 yuan for an agent researcher role tied to its MiMo work. A large-model training-framework internship was listed at 500 to 1,000 yuan a day.
DeepSeek’s public postings were summarized at 500 to 1,000 yuan daily for AGI large-model internships, plus a 3,000-yuan monthly housing subsidy for non-local participants. Based on 22 working days, that implies monthly cash pay of 11,000 to 22,000 yuan before the housing allowance. The comparison also cited a separate deep-learning researcher position offering 80,000 to 110,000 yuan monthly, with 14 months of salary and a maximum stated annual package of 1.54 million yuan.
A social-media claim that DeepSeek offered 5,500 yuan a day to a Tsinghua University Yao Class student was excluded from the ranking because no official confirmation was cited.
Equity complicates the cross-border comparison
Many China-based roles add equity or share ownership to the compensation picture, making daily cash pay an incomplete measure. MiniMax internships were listed at 350 to more than 600 yuan per day for multimodal and algorithm roles, while operations positions ranged from 150 to 200 yuan. The company was described as having 385 employees with near-universal equity participation.
Zhipu AI’s large-model algorithm framework internships were listed at 200 to 300 yuan per day, the lowest cash band in the comparison. The supplied figures said 452 of 883 employees held shares, representing more than 51% ownership. Equity can create a meaningful long-term upside if a company’s valuation rises, but it is less immediate and less certain than salary.
For cryptocurrency markets, the AI pay data offers a narrower lesson than claims of a direct capital drain from digital assets. Frontier AI labs are competing intensely for researchers, compute capacity and specialized engineering talent, reinforcing the high cost of building advanced models. That competition may influence where technology-focused venture capital and technical talent concentrate, but internship wage data alone does not establish that AI spending will reduce cryptocurrency trading volumes or determine token prices.
