US airstrikes hit Iran as Hormuz closes

2026-06-11 11:10

The United States and Iran exchanged fresh attacks into Thursday, escalating a conflict that has disrupted global energy flows and rattled financial markets. U.S. forces launched new strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, while Tehran responded with missile attacks targeting American positions in the Gulf and Jordan.

Explosions were reported across southern Iran, including Qeshm and Kish islands, as the confrontation expanded beyond earlier flashpoints near the Strait of Hormuz.

Airstrikes and retaliation intensify Gulf conflict

The United States and Iran exchanged fresh attacks into Thursday, escalating a conflict that has disrupted global energy flows and rattled financial markets. U.S. forces launched new strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, while Tehran responded with missile attacks targeting American positions in the Gulf and Jordan.

Explosions were reported across southern Iran, including Qeshm and Kish islands, as the confrontation expanded beyond earlier flashpoints near the Strait of Hormuz.

Disputes over strait of hormuz closure

Iran’s military command заявил it had closed the Strait of Hormuz to all traffic and warned that vessels attempting to pass would be targeted. U.S. Central Command rejected that claim, saying commercial shipping was continuing, underscoring the confusion surrounding conditions in one of the world’s most critical oil routes.

The waterway typically carries about one-fifth of global oil supply, and its status has become a central concern for traders and shipping operators.

Trigger incident and shifting us stance

The latest escalation followed a U.S. helicopter crash earlier in the week near Hormuz. American officials said the aircraft may have collided with an Iranian drone, though responsibility remains unclear.

President Donald Trump’s public statements have fluctuated sharply since the incident. After initially downplaying the घटना, he later described it as an Iranian “shootdown” and threatened retaliation, before again claiming Iranian forces had been “defeated” and suggesting a deal remained close. In a later интервью, Trump said Iranian leaders had contacted him to request a halt to U.S. strikes, a claim denied by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.

Humanitarian impact grows

Iran reported that earlier U.S. strikes hit civilian infrastructure, including water facilities in southern regions, cutting off drinking water for tens of thousands of residents. Additional damage to schools and health centers has been cited by humanitarian groups, pointing to worsening conditions in affected areas.

Meanwhile, security alerts have been raised across Gulf states hosting U.S. military bases as the risk of further retaliation grows.

Markets react with volatility

Global markets declined as traders responded to the expanding conflict and uncertainty around energy supplies. Brent crude briefly surged toward $95 per barrel before falling back below $93 following indications that the latest round of U.S. strikes had concluded.

Volatility indicators spiked, with the CBOE Volatility Index rising more than 11% to above 22, reflecting heightened anxiety across financial markets.

The repricing of risk has also spread into global trade. Marine insurance costs for vessels operating near the Persian Gulf have surged sharply, with war-risk coverage reaching up to 10% of a ship’s value, compared with minimal levels prior to the conflict.

Prolonged instability and failed diplomacy

The conflict, now stretching beyond 100 days, has seen repeated claims of imminent diplomatic breakthroughs followed by renewed military action. Previous negotiations in regional capitals have failed to produce binding agreements, while each نئی escalation has added pressure on supply chains and shipping routes.

As of the latest developments, tensions remain elevated, the status of the Strait of Hormuz contested, and markets sensitive to each new military or political signal, with little indication of a sustained de-escalation.
