Proof of Attendance Protocol, the project behind the widely used POAP attendance badges, is shutting down after more than five years of operation, co-founder Isabel Gonzalez said. The closure ends one of crypto’s longest-running experiments with using onchain tokens as digital mementos for real-world and online communities.
POAP badges were minted for conferences, hackathons, classrooms, music events and community meetups, usually claimed by scanning a QR code. Each token served as a record that a wallet had attended a particular event, turning a simple check-in into a collectible blockchain asset.
Gonzalez said POAP worked with 46,210 issuers during its lifetime, including Coinbase, American Express, Warner Music Group and Bayer. The project’s website lists nearly 7.6 million POAPs minted, illustrating how the protocol moved beyond Ethereum-native events and became a common engagement tool for brands, developers and community organizers.
The wind-down reflects the difficult economics facing crypto utility products that can attract substantial early use without establishing recurring revenue capable of supporting staff, infrastructure and product development. POAP’s format was widely understood by users and event organizers, but its distribution model relied heavily on issuing low-cost or free commemorative tokens rather than on a conventional subscription or transaction-fee business.
Badges will remain available onchain
POAP’s website says previously issued badges should remain accessible and tradable onchain after the project ceases operations. That gives holders continued control over tokens already held in their wallets, while leaving open practical questions about how long associated services, such as event-creation tools, websites and badge-discovery features, will remain available.
The distinction matters for a protocol built around event history. A POAP token can remain on a blockchain even if the company and interfaces that made it easy to claim, browse or organize badges are no longer operating. Users may retain the collectible itself, though the surrounding experience that helped make those collections useful and visible can become harder to access.
POAP badges were generally issued as non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, meaning each one represented a distinct event or attendance record rather than a unit interchangeable with another token. While some were tradable, the primary appeal was often social rather than financial: a badge could mark participation in an Ethereum conference, an online course, a local meetup or a limited community campaign.
The protocol also gave organizers a lightweight way to identify and reward past participants. Communities could use badge ownership to gate online channels, recognize contributors, offer follow-up benefits or measure repeat attendance. Those uses made POAP one of the more familiar examples of blockchain credentials being applied outside trading and token speculation.
From ETHDenver experiment to millions of tokens
The idea began in 2019 at ETHDenver, where roughly 100 ERC-721 badges were created and claimed, according to POAP’s website. The project was formally established in 2021, during a period when NFTs expanded rapidly from experimental collectibles into tools for membership, ticketing, gaming and brand engagement.
POAP became particularly visible within the Ethereum ecosystem. Commemorative badges were issued for major network events, including Ethereum’s transition from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake through The Merge. Such tokens gave technical milestones a permanent collectible record and offered participants a way to demonstrate that they had followed or joined an event as it happened.
Its issuer list also showed why the model drew attention beyond crypto-native groups. Companies and organizations could use a familiar QR-code claim process without requiring attendees to understand smart contracts in detail. For many participants, receiving a POAP was their first interaction with a blockchain wallet beyond buying or trading digital assets.
That accessibility did not eliminate the operational burden of maintaining the service. Gonzalez attributed the shutdown to challenges involving crypto funding cycles and distribution dynamics. Projects that issue free digital collectibles face a structural tension: broad distribution can build community awareness, but every campaign can add costs in infrastructure, support and partner management without necessarily producing predictable income.
Closures test crypto’s engagement tools
POAP’s closure arrives alongside other recent shutdowns among products aimed at making blockchain technology more usable. Leap Wallet and portfolio-management platform Zapper have also closed in recent months, while governance platform Tally and investment network Syndicate wound down earlier in 2026, according to the supplied information.
These cases cover different parts of the market, from wallets and portfolio tools to governance and community participation. Their shared pressure is less about whether users can understand the products than whether the companies behind them can maintain services through changing funding conditions and uneven demand.
POAP’s end is likely to be felt most directly by event organizers and communities that used its badges as a low-friction participation record. They may need to preserve links, images and event documentation connected to past collections, while considering alternatives for future attendance campaigns.
For holders, the project’s statement that existing tokens remain onchain means a POAP collection can continue to function as a personal archive of events and communities. The shutdown instead places the emphasis on the durability of the underlying token records rather than the company that popularized the experience of claiming them.
