Pepperstone appoints Nigel Fernandes as CTO

Pepperstone has appointed Nigel Fernandes as chief technology officer, effective 1 October 2026, placing a senior engineering executive from Xero at the center of the broker’s plan to develop more technology internally and expand its presence in crypto and new markets.

Fernandes will lead Pepperstone’s global engineering, architecture, security and data functions and report to Group Chief Executive Officer Tamas Szabo. He will be based at the company’s global headquarters in Melbourne.

The appointment gives Pepperstone a technology leader whose recent work has focused on cloud platforms, customer identity and data systems—three areas that increasingly shape how trading firms manage account access, process market information and deliver services across multiple jurisdictions. Pepperstone said it is pursuing an “AI-native” engineering approach alongside institutional-grade infrastructure as it serves clients in more than 160 countries.

Xero engineering executive joins Pepperstone

Fernandes joins Pepperstone from accounting software company Xero, where he is senior vice president and executive general manager of engineering. According to Pepperstone, he has overseen global engineering teams responsible for cloud platforms, customer identity and data.

His move comes after more than two decades in technology leadership roles spanning financial services, retail, media and enterprise software, Pepperstone said. His previous senior positions include roles at digital business transformation firm Publicis Sapient, Australian retailer Coles Group, online employment marketplace SEEK and design platform Envato.

That background suggests Pepperstone is looking beyond conventional brokerage technology management. Cloud systems, identity tools and data architecture have become core operating infrastructure for firms handling real-time market access, especially as trading platforms add more asset classes, mobile features and automated services.

Pepperstone did not provide details on specific products Fernandes will oversee after taking the role. The company said his remit covers the engineering and data foundations supporting its international operations.

Internal technology focus meets crypto expansion

Pepperstone describes itself as a global fintech and contracts-for-difference, or CFD, broker offering access to forex, indices, commodities, shares, ETFs and digital asset markets. CFDs allow traders to take positions on price movements without owning the underlying asset, making platform reliability, pricing feeds and risk systems central to the customer experience.

The firm said it is moving toward building and owning more of its internal technology. For a broker offering access across several markets, bringing more systems under direct control could give engineering teams greater influence over how quickly they integrate new trading tools, data services and security features.

That approach also places more responsibility on Pepperstone to maintain resilient systems as its product range develops. Trading platforms depend on a chain of services—including market-data delivery, order routing, account authentication, risk controls and customer support tools—where delays or outages can affect users during volatile market conditions.

Crypto market access adds another layer of operational demands. Digital asset prices trade continuously, unlike many traditional markets, and periods of rapid movement can test the stability of trading interfaces and risk-management systems. Firms that offer crypto-linked products must also adapt their systems to evolving requirements across the jurisdictions where they operate.

Pepperstone has not outlined a separate crypto technology strategy tied to Fernandes’ appointment. Its statement instead connects the CTO hire to a broader internal engineering agenda and expansion into crypto and other markets.

Technology leadership becomes a competitive issue

Brokerage firms have often relied on a mix of internally built systems and third-party trading infrastructure. The balance can affect the pace at which a firm can alter its customer interface, add market coverage, improve account controls or respond to changing regulatory requirements.

A stronger in-house engineering organization can reduce dependence on external development schedules for certain functions, though it also requires sustained hiring, cybersecurity spending and operational oversight. Fernandes’ experience in cloud, identity and data systems aligns with areas where brokers face mounting pressure from both customers and regulators.

Customer identity systems, for example, sit behind account opening, access security and fraud prevention. Data platforms help firms monitor usage, maintain records and support decisions across business and risk functions. Cloud infrastructure can allow services to scale across regions, but it also requires careful design around availability, privacy and recovery planning.

Pepperstone’s reference to AI-native engineering indicates that artificial intelligence may be incorporated into how it develops or operates technology, rather than being limited to a single customer-facing feature. The company did not specify the AI tools or use cases it plans to deploy.

In financial services, potential applications can include software development support, customer-service workflows, security monitoring and analysis of operational data. Any use involving trading decisions, customer suitability or risk outcomes would require controls tailored to the relevant product and jurisdiction.

Melbourne base for global technology remit

Fernandes will work from Melbourne while overseeing a global function, reflecting Pepperstone’s position as an Australian-founded firm with international operations. The company’s client footprint across more than 160 countries means its technology teams must support different market structures, local rules and customer expectations.

The October start date also gives Pepperstone several weeks to prepare the leadership transition. Szabo will gain a CTO responsible for connecting engineering priorities with the company’s commercial expansion plans, including its stated interest in digital asset markets.

The hire does not by itself signal a change to Pepperstone’s available products or trading conditions. It does establish who will be accountable for the technology stack behind those services as the broker seeks to bring more development capability inside the company.
