Elon Musk's X launches Cashtags for financial data viewing

  • X has introduced “Cashtags,” a feature that shows live stock and crypto data inside user timelines.
  • The rollout is limited to iPhone users in the US and Canada.
  • Canadian users can tap through to Wealthsimple to trade referenced assets.
  • X will not execute trades itself, focusing instead on data tools and links to external platforms.
  • The feature is part of Elon Musk’s broader push to turn X into a finance-enabled “super app,” alongside the emerging X Money payments system.

New feature embeds markets into social timelines

X has begun rolling out Cashtags, a tool that lets users pull up real-time price charts and basic financial information on stocks and cryptocurrencies directly from their feeds.

Head of product Nikita Bier said the feature is currently live for iPhone users in the United States and Canada. Users can search by ticker symbol or crypto contract address, then tap the resulting Cashtag to see a live chart and related posts discussing that asset.

In Canada, Cashtags include an option to open Wealthsimple from within the app, giving users a one-click path from social discussion to trading on the external platform. X has not said when, or if, this integration will be extended beyond Canada or to other brokerages.

X keeps clear of brokerage role

Bier emphasized that X will not act as a broker or process trades. Instead, the company aims to build financial data utilities and external links that route users to third-party trading venues.

That approach keeps X focused on information, discovery and referrals, while leaving trade execution and custody to existing regulated platforms.

Part of Musk’s broader financial push

Cashtags arrive as owner Elon Musk moves to reposition X as a super app that combines communication, finance and payments.

Musk has said that early public access to “X Money,” the in-app payments feature for person-to-person transfers, is expected to begin in April. A December job listing showed the company hiring a senior engineer specifically for the X Money platform.

Last month, designer Benji Taylor, formerly of Aave and Base, was appointed to lead X’s design team, with a mandate that includes the financial product suite.

Real-time information hub reshapes market dynamics

By merging price charts with real-time discussion, Cashtags compress the gap between news, sentiment and potential trading decisions. The feed effectively becomes a live market sentiment terminal, where speculation, breaking headlines and price data circulate together.

Since the full North American rollout last month, posts mentioning assets with the new Cashtag format have climbed by more than 450%, underscoring rapid adoption among active users.

Data firm CryptoQuant reports that assets ranking in the top five Cashtags on X saw an average 18% rise in trading volume on North American exchanges within six hours of trending, suggesting a measurable link between social visibility and market activity.

Opportunities and risks for market behavior

The speed and scale of Cashtag-driven discussion may give traders an earlier read on shifting attention and potential capital flows. Monitoring the velocity and sentiment of trending tags could serve as a proxy for where short-term interest is clustering.

At the same time, the tighter connection between social hype, live pricing and external trading links may make coordinated campaigns to move prices via social media more efficient.

The streamlined path from reading a post to reaching a trading platform heightens the possibility that rapid sentiment swings on X could translate more quickly into market volatility.

X Money pilot advances alongside Cashtags

Parallel to the Cashtags rollout, Musk’s broader financial plans are advancing. The X Money payments system has onboarded its first 50,000 users in Texas and Wyoming, according to internal reports, with initial support for Bitcoin and Dogecoin transfers.

Taylor’s design team is working on tying payments functionality directly into the Cashtags interface, aiming to create a unified experience where users can move from viewing asset data to sending value with minimal friction.

If fully integrated, the combined Cashtags and X Money stack would position X as a central hub for discovering assets, tracking sentiment, and connecting out to trading and payment rails in near real time.
