SpaceX has confirmed that entrepreneur Chun Wang, co‑founder of Bitcoin mining pool F2Pool, will fly on the company’s first planned crewed mission to Mars, a two-year voyage that will travel beyond the moon, loop around Mars, and return to Earth.
Details of the Mars mission
The expedition forms part of SpaceX’s long-term interplanetary program and is expected to precede a broader campaign of research and cargo flights to Mars. According to the company, those uncrewed missions could begin in or after 2028, laying the groundwork for eventual human settlement on the planet.
SpaceX’s long-range objective is to build a self-sustaining city on Mars, a settlement the company says would ultimately require more than one million residents and the transport of millions of tons of materials from Earth.
Wang’s role and previous spaceflight
Wang will be part of the crew on the Mars voyage after already having financed and commanded SpaceX’s “Fram2” mission, a private flight that passed over Earth’s poles and focused on medical and biological research.
The Fram2 mission conducted the first X-ray in space and carried a multidisciplinary crew: German polar scientist Rabea Rogge, Norwegian cinematographer Jannicke Mikkelsen, and Australian Arctic explorer Eric Philips.
In addition to the Mars expedition, Wang has purchased a separate seat on a weeklong commercial lunar orbit mission that is scheduled to launch before the Mars flight.
Background on Chun Wang and F2Pool
Wang, a Maltese citizen born in China, founded F2Pool in 2013. The Bitcoin mining pool has grown into one of the world’s largest, with a mining market share recently estimated between 10% and 11.85%.
His participation in the Mars mission adds to a growing list of technology figures engaging in commercial space travel. Previous high-profile participants include Jeff Bezos, Richard Branson, and Jared Isaacman.
