Shaw Walters, founder of the Eliza OS project, says the ai16z token effort has been terminated, the associated foundation has been shut down and no token buyback will take place, leaving holders to make their own arrangements. The announcement closes a project that rose from a small Solana fundraising campaign in late 2024 into one of the largest names in the short-lived crypto AI-agent trade.
Walters said he once held about $25 million in ai16z tokens and did not sell them before the position fell to zero. He also said the Eliza foundation exhausted its funds through legal settlements and could no longer cover additional legal costs.
The decision leaves a sharp divide between the token experiment and the underlying software. Eliza, the open-source framework developed around the project, continues to receive updates and has attracted companies interested in potential collaborations, according to Walters. The token and foundation, meanwhile, no longer appear to have a stated mechanism for support, redemption or repurchase.
From a 420.69 SOL raise to a $2.6 billion valuation
The project began fundraising in October 2024, seeking 420.69 SOL, which it described as roughly $75,000. Its stated objective was to build an AI-managed investment fund, combining automated agent technology with a crypto-native treasury and token structure.
Within less than three months, ai16z reached a market value of $2.6 billion, according to the figures provided by the project’s account of its rise. The wider AI agent token category expanded from effectively no valuation to nearly $10 billion over the same period.
That rapid appreciation placed ai16z at the center of a market narrative that treated AI agents as both software products and tradable financial vehicles. Tokens were often valued on the expectation that autonomous agents could analyze markets, manage wallets, interact with communities and produce useful commercial services.
The collapse of the foundation shows how quickly those two roles can separate. A software framework may remain available, be updated by developers and potentially find commercial users, while the token created around it can lose its stated support structure. Token holders do not automatically hold ownership rights over open-source code, the founding team or future commercial arrangements built with that code.
Questions over agent autonomy surfaced early
Questions about the project’s core product appeared less than a week after launch. Critics questioned whether “Marc AIndreessen,” ai16z’s flagship AI agent, was being run by a human rather than operating autonomously.
Similar concerns later emerged around aiIxbt, a market-analysis agent associated with the sector. The debate went beyond technical performance. A token’s valuation can depend heavily on claims that an agent is independently generating analysis, executing tasks or building a user base. If human operators are directing the activity behind the scenes, the gap between the product narrative and its actual capabilities can become financially material for traders.
Crypto projects have long used tokens to finance early-stage development, organize online communities and distribute governance rights. AI-agent tokens extended that model by attaching financial value to software personalities, automated social-media accounts and proposed autonomous workflows. The sector’s rise created incentives to treat public attention, agent activity and token prices as mutually reinforcing signals.
Walters’ statement illustrates the vulnerability of that arrangement when legal expenses, organizational costs or internal disputes consume the funds intended to support it. The project’s foundation, rather than the open-source codebase, appears to have been the financial entity holding and deploying resources. Once that entity ran out of money, token holders were left without a buyback plan.
Open-source development continues outside the token structure
Eliza’s continued development makes the ai16z outcome more complicated than a simple software shutdown. Walters said the framework remains active and that companies have discussed collaborations around it. He also wrote that Claude has been among the most active recent contributors.
That arrangement reflects a changing environment for AI software. By 2026, products such as CodeX and Claude offered capabilities resembling functions earlier promoted in crypto AI-agent narratives, including workflow handling and market analysis. These tools are generally commercialized through subscriptions and API fees, where users pay directly for access or usage rather than purchasing a token in anticipation of future adoption.
The contrast puts pressure on token-funded AI projects to establish a clear connection between a network asset and a product’s actual economic activity. Open-source frameworks can attract contributors and enterprise interest without requiring a token to function. A token can only retain a distinct role if it governs resources, secures a network, pays for required services or captures activity in a defined and credible way.
Walters’ account suggests ai16z could not sustain that bridge after the foundation’s finances deteriorated. The underlying technology may continue under an open-source model, but no buyback means the token’s former market narrative no longer includes a foundation-led recovery mechanism.
Compute networks follow a different model
Other crypto-linked AI initiatives have focused less on autonomous online personalities and more on coordinating computing resources. Bittensor has pursued a decentralized AI compute market, while Render has built a distributed GPU rendering network. Such projects face their own execution and token-design challenges, but their models are tied more directly to the provision and consumption of computing capacity.
On-chain AI use cases also extend beyond chatbot-style agents. Developers have explored data analysis, smart-contract vulnerability scanning, whale-wallet tracking, sentiment monitoring and automated contract strategies. Each use case raises a practical question: whether a blockchain and token are necessary for the service, or whether conventional software infrastructure would serve users more efficiently.
For former ai16z holders, Walters’ announcement offers no stated financial remedy. For the wider market, it provides a hard example of the limits of treating open-source development, online governance and speculative token financing as interchangeable. Software can survive the collapse of the token structure built around it; holders of that token may not share in the software’s continued life.
