Samsung Electro-Mechanics signs AI server capacitor deal

Samsung Electro-Mechanics has secured a 295.1 billion won, or about $204 million, contract to supply multilayer ceramic capacitors for AI servers and data-center systems throughout 2027, extending a run of large component orders tied to expanding computing infrastructure.

The agreement, disclosed by the company on July 23, adds to 450 billion won in MLCC supply contracts announced in June. Samsung Electro-Mechanics has therefore disclosed roughly 750 billion won in AI-server MLCC orders this year, based on its public filings and announcements. When combined with a 1.5 trillion won silicon capacitor supply agreement announced in May, the company’s disclosed AI-server component contracts total more than 2.25 trillion won, or approximately $1.5 billion.

The contracts point to longer purchasing commitments for a component category that sits deep inside server hardware but becomes more critical as processors draw more power. AI systems require dense, high-performance capacitors to smooth voltage fluctuations around computing chips, memory and power-delivery circuits. The growing order book gives Samsung Electro-Mechanics greater visibility over demand extending into 2027, rather than relying solely on short-cycle electronics orders.

According to Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ filing, the July agreement equals about 2.6% of its 2023 consolidated revenue of 11.3145 trillion won. The customer was identified only as a global technology company.

Capacitors become a larger part of AI server spending

MLCCs are small electronic components that store and release electrical energy, helping circuits maintain stable voltage and filter electrical noise. They are widely used in smartphones, cars, industrial equipment and servers, but AI infrastructure raises the required volume and performance specifications.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics said AI-server racks can contain as many as 600,000 MLCCs, more than ten times the number used in conventional servers. The higher count reflects the processing density of systems built around powerful accelerators, high-bandwidth memory and specialized networking equipment.

Those environments create more difficult engineering demands than consumer electronics. Components must combine small size with high capacitance, while maintaining reliability under high temperatures and the physical stress caused by circuit-board warping. That narrows the group of manufacturers able to produce suitable parts consistently at large scale.

The company has positioned its high-capacity, high-reliability MLCCs as a key growth product for AI servers, alongside industrial and automotive applications. Its latest disclosed contracts suggest that component purchasers are seeking to reserve supply before server deployments are completed, especially where a shortage of relatively low-cost passive parts could delay delivery of much more expensive computing systems.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics said it is also negotiating additional long-term supply arrangements with global customers. Such agreements can help customers secure production capacity while allowing suppliers to plan equipment investment and manufacturing output further ahead.

Silicon capacitors address chip-level power demands

The company’s 1.5 trillion won silicon capacitor agreement adds another layer to its AI infrastructure strategy. Silicon capacitors are used closer to high-performance chips, including inside or near packages containing graphics processors and high-bandwidth memory.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics said silicon capacitors can offer electrical resistance roughly one-hundredth that of conventional MLCCs. Lower resistance can support faster and more stable power delivery, an increasingly valuable feature as advanced processors switch power loads rapidly during intensive computing tasks.

The distinction matters because AI-server demand is not concentrated in a single component type. Each system needs processors, memory, networking hardware, power supplies, cooling equipment, printed circuit boards and numerous passive components. A supplier with products serving both board-level and chip-package power stabilization can capture more value from each server build than a producer focused on a single low-end capacitor category.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics said it holds more than 40% of the AI-server MLCC market. The company attributes its position to proprietary technology and manufacturing capacity, though the market-share figure was not independently detailed in the announcement.

Shares rose after the contract disclosure

Samsung Electro-Mechanics shares rose more than 8% in intraday trading after the July disclosure, according to the market data cited in the supplied materials. The move reflected heightened attention toward companies supplying the physical infrastructure behind AI computing, including memory, substrates, cooling equipment and power-management components.

The stock reaction does not change the commercial test facing the company: it must convert announced agreements into sustained deliveries while meeting the reliability standards demanded by data-center customers. Large contracts also increase the operational cost of production disruptions, because server makers typically coordinate deliveries across many tightly scheduled hardware suppliers.

The disclosed orders provide a clearer measure of AI infrastructure spending than broad claims about component shortages. They show that Samsung Electro-Mechanics has already booked multiyear demand for specialized capacitors, with the newest MLCC contract scheduled to cover all of 2027.

For the company, the immediate effect is a more visible pipeline in higher-value server components. For data-center builders, the agreements would help secure parts that are inexpensive relative to AI chips but essential to keeping those chips operating safely and reliably under heavy workloads.
