Manchester United vs Everton football match prediction

2026-09-04 05:53

Toobit

Manchester United arrive at Hill Dickinson Stadium with a problem they have already seen this season. When the middle stays closed, their possession drifts wide and the crosses pile up. When Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes connect closer to goal, the attack looks far harder to contain.

Everton’s task is to decide which version of United appears. Their compact midfield can slow the visitors, but only if Iliman Ndiaye and Thierno Barry remain close enough to turn defensive work into a genuine counterattack.

Competition: Premier League
Matchweek: 3
Date and time: September 6, 2026, 2:00 p.m. British Summer Time (BST) / 1:00 p.m. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) / 8:00 p.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB)
Place: Hill Dickinson Stadium, Liverpool, England

Everton have four points from their opening two league matches. That is a solid return, although Crystal Palace and Bournemouth both found enough space to make those results uncomfortable.

United’s start has swung from a 2-0 defeat at Hull to a 5-2 win over Ipswich. The recovery showed a better route through midfield, even if the score benefited from an opponent error, an own goal, a penalty, and deflections.

The visitors have the stronger open-play case. Everton’s answer lies in blocking central access, then releasing Ndiaye before United recover their shape. The first few forward passes will tell us more than the possession count.

What the opening two matches revealed

United had 71.7% possession, 21 shots, and 1.83 expected goals (xG) away to Hull, according to Sky Sports’ match data. They also attempted 39 crosses and failed to score. Opta recorded 34 of those from open play, United’s highest Premier League total in almost eight years.

Hull did not stop every attack. They simply kept enough bodies between the posts, encouraged United toward the flanks, and defended most deliveries while facing the ball. The visitors had territory without consistently changing the shape of the defense.

Ipswich presented a different picture. United produced 4.77 xG, with 3.72 coming from open play, across 33 shots. Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans provided a calmer platform, Cunha linked midfield and attack, and Fernandes received closer to the penalty area.

Five goals still overstate how settled the performance was. Cunha’s first assist followed an Ipswich slip, while the own goal, penalty, and favorable deflections added volatility to the scoreline. The repeatable part was the chance volume, not the five-goal total.

Everton’s results need the same separation between outcome and process. Across the Palace and Bournemouth matches, Sky Sports’ data gave them 2.96 xG and their opponents 4.12 xG. Jordan Pickford, last-ditch defending, and poor finishing helped keep the goals conceded to one.

Their own attack was not built solely on dead balls. Everton pressed selectively, moved forward quickly after regains, used Ndiaye from the right, and found Barry inside the box. Set plays supplied 0.75 xG, useful enough to respect but not enough to define their entire threat.

Manchester United analysis

United need their possession to move Everton’s midfield before it reaches the wings.

Likely shape: 4-2-3-1

  • Build-up and progression: Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez can split during the first phase, with Mainoo and Tielemans offering different passing heights ahead of them. Everton are unlikely to chase every pass between the center-backs. The key moment comes when a midfielder steps out and United find the receiver behind him before the block resets.

  • Cunha and Fernandes: Cunha does not have to stay beside the center-backs. Dropping toward midfield forces Everton to decide whether a screener follows him. Fernandes then reads the space created by that decision. If Everton refuse to step out, Cunha has room to receive on the turn. This relationship, rather than a dead-ball advantage, is the strongest reason to favor United.

  • Width with a purpose: Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford stretch the block, but wide possession should begin the next action rather than end it. United want Everton to slide toward a flank before returning the ball inside. An early cross is useful when runners have already moved the back line. Repeating it against a settled defense would recreate the Hull match.

  • Protection after turnovers: The Ipswich opener came through United’s left side, and a late Martínez turnover led to the second goal. Whenever Luke Shaw advances, the nearest midfielder has to guard the route toward Ndiaye. One missed challenge would leave United’s defenders running toward their own goal.

If Everton survive the opening pressure, United must resist forcing the easy ball into the box. Their patience has value only while the next pass still carries an attacking purpose.

Everton analysis

Everton are comfortable without the ball, provided each regain carries them away from their own box.

Likely shape: 4-2-3-1

  • Mid-block position: Everton should keep the midfield close to the center-backs without collapsing onto Pickford’s six-yard box. Comfortable United possession around the back line is less dangerous than allowing Cunha to receive beyond the screen. The distance between midfield and defense is what matters most.

  • Selective pressure: Harrison Armstrong’s turnover before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s goal against Palace showed how one well-timed jump changes an attack. A United fullback receiving near the touchline with a closed body position offers a sensible trigger. Chasing Maguire or the goalkeeper without support would only open the middle.

  • The first pass forward: A regain has little value if Everton immediately play sideways and allow United to counter-press. Dewsbury-Hall can offer a central escape, while an earlier release toward Ndiaye forces Shaw and Martínez to retreat. Everton need the ball to travel before United’s shape does.

  • Ndiaye and Barry: The right side is Everton’s cleanest open-play route. Ndiaye supplied Barry from that flank against Palace, and the same movement targets the space around Shaw. Barry reached promising areas against Bournemouth and must stay between the center-backs here. His positioning gives Ndiaye an early target and leaves room for Dewsbury-Hall to arrive later.

  • Defensive risk: Palace reached good positions before the final attempt failed, while Bournemouth broke the first pressure with one forward pass before Evanilson turned James Tarkowski and created the opener. United have several players suited to attacking the same separation.

  • Dead balls as support: Jarrad Branthwaite threatened from Dewsbury-Hall’s delivery at Bournemouth, and Tarkowski scored after a corner was not cleared. The second action is as important as the first contact. Dead balls strengthen Everton’s route, but their better open-play chance begins with Ndiaye attacking a defense that has not reset.

Everton’s block cannot spend the entire afternoon retreating. It has to produce enough regains and forward exits to give the back line a break.

Line-by-line comparison

Area

Edge

Why it matters

Goalkeeper

Everton

Jordan Pickford has already helped Everton survive periods when their defensive shape was breached. His presence gives the home side a stronger last line if United begin creating clean central chances.

Center-back defending

Even

Everton were opened by one forward pass at Bournemouth, while United conceded dangerous runs and chances after turnovers against Ipswich. Neither defense has earned a clear advantage.

Midfield progression

Manchester United

Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans gave United cleaner central progression against Ipswich. Their ability to break Everton’s first line would reduce the visitors’ reliance on early crosses.

Open-play chance creation

Manchester United

United’s performance against Ipswich showed a higher attacking ceiling. Cunha and Fernandes offer a clearer route through the middle than Everton have produced during settled possession.

Pressing and pressure escapes

Even

Everton’s selective pressure created the turnover behind their opening goal against Palace, but Bournemouth also bypassed that pressure with one forward pass. United have shown a similar mix of useful pressure and vulnerable spacing.

Transition threat

Everton

Everton’s first forward pass and the right-sided connection between Iliman Ndiaye and Thierno Barry target the area United have struggled to protect after losing possession.

Set pieces

Everton

James Tarkowski scored following the second action of a corner, while Jarrad Branthwaite also threatened from a delivery against Bournemouth. This gives Everton a useful secondary route when open-play attacks become limited.

United’s most meaningful advantage is the combination of midfield progression and open-play creation. Everton can narrow that gap through Pickford, quick right-sided transitions, and set pieces, but relying on short attacking windows is difficult to sustain. The comparison supports a United lean without suggesting a comfortable away win.

Cunha and Fernandes against Everton’s central screen

Mainoo and Tielemans will try to make the first forward pass from the double pivot. Cunha then moves toward Armstrong and whichever midfielder shares the central screen, asking one of them to leave the line. Fernandes waits for the gap behind that movement.

Everton cannot follow both players without exposing Tarkowski and Branthwaite. One midfielder has to meet Cunha while the other protects Fernandes’ run, with Dewsbury-Hall helping close the return pass. The timing needs to be exact. Step too early and United play through. Hold too long and Cunha turns.

Width gives United a way to stretch those responsibilities. Mbeumo and Rashford can hold the outside positions until Everton slide across, then move inward once the ball returns toward the center. If the return pass never arrives, Everton have succeeded in turning a central problem into a crossing exercise.

Winning this area also creates Everton’s best transition. A central interception leaves Ndiaye ready on the right while United’s midfield is still facing Everton’s goal. One forward pass changes the direction of the whole move.

Cunha’s first touch offers a useful visual clue. Receiving on the turn means United are starting to separate Everton’s lines. Receiving with his back to goal, surrounded and with Fernandes still in front of the midfield, means the home side are controlling the space.

Match scenarios

Scenario 1: Manchester United score early

A United goal inside the first 20 to 30 minutes would change Everton’s approach immediately. Dewsbury-Hall would move closer to Barry, while the fullbacks and wide players would have to take greater risks in possession.

That shift leaves more room for Cunha to receive and Fernandes to run beyond him. United could lower the tempo without becoming passive, waiting for Everton to open the channels around their center-backs.

David Moyes would need quicker service into Ndiaye and Barry rather than a simple increase in crosses. The likely score range is Everton 0-2 Manchester United to Everton 1-3 Manchester United.

Scenario 2: The match is level at halftime

A level halftime score would suggest that Everton have restricted United’s central entries, or that the visitors have reached good areas without finishing. Michael Carrick’s response depends on which of those happened.

If Cunha and Fernandes remain in front of Everton’s midfield, United could add a more fixed penalty-area presence or fresh running from wide. Moyes has less reason to disturb the central screen. He would want Everton’s outlet preserved for the moment United’s fullbacks advance more aggressively.

The slower rhythm favors Everton. Plausible finishes are Everton 0-1 Manchester United, Everton 1-1 Manchester United, or Everton 1-2 Manchester United.

Scenario 3: Everton score first

An Everton opener would test whether United have learned from Hull. The visitors would push their fullbacks higher and place more bodies around the penalty area. Everton would defend lower, press selected backward passes, and keep Ndiaye available after clearances.

United’s main danger would be replacing patient progression with rushed crossing. Everton’s would be dropping so deep that every regain returns immediately. Fresh attacking legs could help the home side preserve a route out rather than merely add another defender.

That match state leaves Everton 1-1 Manchester United, Everton 2-1 Manchester United, and Everton 1-2 Manchester United as credible finishes.

Players to watch

  • Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United: Once United break Everton’s midfield line, Fernandes has to choose between attacking the box and releasing the next runner. Against Ipswich, his threat extended beyond the hat trick to the pass that sent Mbeumo behind the defense. Everton cannot give him both options on the same possession.

  • Matheus Cunha, Manchester United: Cunha reacted quickly to an Ipswich error before supplying Fernandes and later drove into the box to win a penalty. Everton must track his second movement after the initial pass or challenge, not only his starting position.

  • Iliman Ndiaye, Everton: Everton need Ndiaye available immediately after a regain. His starting position on the right places him near the space around Shaw, but the timing of the release is crucial. A late pass would allow United to recover and surround him.

  • Jordan Pickford, Everton: Pickford has already helped Everton survive moments when their defensive shape was breached. His first major save may decide whether the home side can stay patient or have to open the match earlier than planned.

Everton vs Manchester United prediction

Probability view for 90 minutes plus stoppage time:

  • Everton win: 29%

  • Draw: 28%

  • Manchester United win: 43%

Main score prediction:

Everton 1-2 Manchester United

Alternative score prediction:

Everton 1-1 Manchester United

The away win receives the largest share because United have shown a credible way to create better open-play chances. Mainoo and Tielemans move the ball through the first line, while the players ahead of them attack a defense that has started to shift. That mechanism is more convincing than the five-goal scoreline against Ipswich.

Everton’s countercase is strong enough to keep the forecast close. Their selective press can interrupt United’s buildup, Ndiaye has a direct route into the space on the visitors’ left, and Pickford has helped them survive periods when the defense was breached.

If Everton keep United facing away from goal and force another high-crossing performance, 1-1 becomes the more plausible result. Cleaner central entries make the away win more likely.

Match outlook

Manchester United are the lean, but only narrowly. If Everton turn regains into early passes toward Ndiaye and push United back into a crossing game, 1-1 moves much closer. Otherwise, the visitors have enough central craft to edge a tight match.
